Help me with a list of common misconceptions

I've been asked to compile a list of common misconceptions "regular" people have about strength training. For example, you can't grow or get stronger without going to failure. Basically anything to come out of a bodybuilding mag.

What misconceptions have you heard/seen?
 
Not about strength training per se, but....

If I touch a weight heavier than 5lbs I'll get too muscular (women)

I'll get slow/It will hinder my athletic performance.
 
Misconceptions missed so far:
Women who don't juice can get big and bulky by lifting weights

Low reps=size, high reps=cuts

Training each body part once a week is ideal

Muscle can turn into fat after you stop training

I'll think of some more later...
 
Abs and calves don't need to rest because they are different muscles than the rest of your body.

big bench = big pecs - FALSE

Deadlifting is a dangerous exercise with very little carry over.

wrist straps make you stronger

the more you work your abs, the more ab packs you get. (ie, i only have a 6 pack, what can i do to get the bottom two?)

losing weight is harder than gaining.

i want to work the inside bicep head and not the outside one.

i need to isolate my upper inner peck quadrant.

powerlifters are just a bunch of fat guys

strongman is not a true test of strength.

bodybuilders are all show and no go.

thats all i got.

FYI- My fav is the "I don't want to get too jacked" thing... I had a guy ask me some advice, and they say this $hit after I gave him what he asked....

I said, "dude, don't worry, not like it is going to sneak up on your a$$ one night while you are sleeping, trust me on this one..."

People are stupid...
 
If your ab muscles don't line up with each other you can 'straighten' them out by working one side more than the other.

Yep. I really heard this one.
 
You can shape your muscles by doing "sculpting" exercises...

Hydroxycut will melt off fat.

Low carb diets are required to lose fat.

Someone said Squats hurting knees and deadlifts being dangerous...

And people not wanting to get huge... that kills me.

That one pisses me off actually. Guys come up to me in the gym and ask for advice..."but I don't want to get as big as you..." Its like, look jackass, you are 160 ibs and natural. You just saw me step out of the squat rack after doing reps with 500 ibs. When start getting close to that, then tell me you are worried about getting too big. Like I just take creatine and play in the gym 2 or 3 times a week, doing 135 ibs squats and 95 ibs bench presses... and it just snuck up on me by accident.

Ok, honestly I don't actually say that. I'm a really nice guy, and talk alot more shit to people on EF than I do in real life. I'm nice to everyone, so, I usually just give them some honest and friendly advice, but sometimes I want to tell them something like that. I just hate being rude to people though, even when they deserve it.
 
Exactly- But I have no problem being rude.... If they come to me to ask a question, I am always nice about it, but if you say something stupid like that you deserve to get blasted...
 
I'm getting fat now so when I start working out, it will turn to muscle. My legs are already big enough, so I just bench and curl. I don't want to start working out, cause when I stop, it will all turn to fat. I don't want big muscles cause then the girls won't leave me alone (ok, that one's true)
 
that if you walk around with your arms out like wings people are not going to laugh at you

Lifting weights and building muscle is a waste of time cuz when you stop lifting the muscle will turn to fat.
 
haha FinipliX! Unfortunately I have the problem of being a nice guy as well =( Luckily Im usually able to scare a good deal of people with my appearence before they approach me. But once word gets around Im kinda fucked. hehe At the same time Im able to turn over on the spot, so peeps should play nicely...Little do they realize I may be fantasizing about tearing off thier fucking skin and eating them alive. But again Thats just not right........dilemnas dilemnas hahahaha
 
Do not carry heavy weights, ie , never do heavy squats or deadlifts because it will make ur spine bent and ur leg bones will compress and become shorter.

Pec-dec machine will make my pecs wider on the outer and make it look nicer.

Bending legs when doing bench press instead of putting it firmly on the floor as it will give more feeling to the chest.

Going down only 5 inches from the top on the bench press.

Drinking only milk post workout.

What's wrong with wearing spandex to the gym? Granted, if you are fat, you shouldn't wear it, but if you are a lean bodybuilder,why not?

You are correct. You will be banned for any less clothing in your avatar.

Spandex in your avatar is also grounds for immediate banning.

Another of my favorites is that you shouldn't touch your chest on bench because it is bad for your shoulders.

Lifting weights is not good for you because you will become "muscle bound" .
