I have to go to Merida then to Mexico City.

Wow Merida. Dont know much about that place other than it's pretty different from the rest of the entire country. I dont think it's got any particular problem with violent crime though.

The capital is a different story. Like I said, educate yourself about the different areas of the city before you go. If you're there on business I expect you wont have any reason to go into the really dangerous areas though. In some ways it's similar to DC....it's the seat of the government, but it's also got some seriously bad neighborhoods.

Just dont be foolish and attract a lot of attention to the fact that you may have a lot of cash. Be very polite with the police if you get hassled. And interstate bus travel might not the best option for you. Fly from Merida to the capital in you can.

Most of the people are really very honest and decent, but being American everyone will see you as being rich and you will attract the scumbags. Sorry.

Thanks, yes Merida is the Yucatan Capital (you probably know) I'll take in the sites too while I'm there. Then I am catching a flight from there to Mexico City. I'm flying cheap class and it is still 1800 US from Boston, getting expensive out there. Feel free to PM me any other info you think I should have.

Thank you.

Do you use a belt? Should I carry cash? not the resort areas, but like the towns/cities (eg., Mexico city)...any other tips?
I left mine in my suitcase in my hotel room. You don't need to carry it around with you bor.

nevermind, I didn't know you were going to mexico city. That place is fucked-up. Millions of people too. I keep most all your money inside your sock, and don't let anybody see you take any out of it if you do. Also make sure you appear confident all the time, and act like you are a regular visitor. When I go to places like that and I see a cop or cops walking together I will give them the whats-up nod so they don't think I'm intimidated.
Most the cops are still in there teens, and generally if your a bigger sized guy they don't mess with you anyway IME anyway.

keep it in your front pocket at all times ....make 2 copies keep one in your hotel room at all times and leave one at home with someone u can trust along with a copy of your drivers lic and birth cetrificate, because if you loose everything you will need someone u can trust to fax these copies to the appropriate ppl in mexico to let you back in.

if worse comes to worse you will have to rent a car and make a trip to mexico city and they can get you a new passport the same day..

ask me how i know? Well i was almost stranded in mexico. the american consilate told me to get a job there lol

Pack heat and carry some money too. You might need some when you get caught by some corrupted cops.
Do NOT carry heat. Get caught with a gun in Mexico you'd better use it!

back pocket.

stay in daylight tourist areas.

Try to stay away from border towns.

Never really had a problem. Been to mexico many times.

don't get drunk, and stumble around at night by yourself. You're just asking to be pickpocketed.
