Interesting. How did you go about getting your short stories and articles published? Did you have an agent or did you send the stuff out yourself?
Short stories - i sent them in myself. I started by submitting to really small places like college publications (although they are much more likely to publish their allumni), and specialty places. Like newsletters that want stories or articles.
Eventually i started sending to slightly bigger places that paid- the most I got for a short story was $500.
You have to make sure you submit within the right timeframe and guidelines though- some places have word limits, others want it only in certain formats, and most will only accept entries during certain months.
For articles, I will write one for a specific industry in mind, then submit it to the trade magazines (their circulation can be pretty large. like, between 20,000 and 60,000). I write a good coverletter, and give some background information about myself, including the places i've been published before. that gives you some credibility. make sure you cite your sources, and give them a word count.
