For anything?

Did you get published twice? How long inbetween? What were your experiences with the publishing business?

yes, plenty of times.

short stories, articles, and a lot of interest in a book that's taking me a long time to finish.

I've had very positive experiences and made some money. :)

I had an article published last month in a trade magazine and just sent in another article to a different one, although the leader in the industry.
I was asked to write one for a big police magazine, but haven't started that yet.

I had a few things on Unix websites but I'm not sure they're still around.

Interesting. How did you go about getting your short stories and articles published? Did you have an agent or did you send the stuff out yourself?

I don't know anything outside of how publishing in academic journals works... how much does it cost to publish your own work? Hundreds, thousands of dollars? Or do you just find a publishing company that thinks they can make a profit off of your book? (If they don't, then what?)

I'm sure anyone can pay to self-publish their work, but at what level does one get their book carried by, say, Barnes and Nobel, Borders, or other bookstore chains?

Wow, that was a lot of questions for one post. Sorry, lol.

I would imagine self publishing is worthless unless you're a "VERY" known author. You can self publish and maybe get your shit sold on amazon, but how are people going to know about it.

Stilletto, can I ask "approx" how much money you made from your publshings? If you don't want to answer that I totally understand, or if you want to pm it that's cool. Just a ballpark figure is all I'm looking for.

Short stories - i sent them in myself. I started by submitting to really small places like college publications (although they are much more likely to publish their allumni), and specialty places. Like newsletters that want stories or articles.
Eventually i started sending to slightly bigger places that paid- the most I got for a short story was $500.

You have to make sure you submit within the right timeframe and guidelines though- some places have word limits, others want it only in certain formats, and most will only accept entries during certain months.

For articles, I will write one for a specific industry in mind, then submit it to the trade magazines (their circulation can be pretty large. like, between 20,000 and 60,000). I write a good coverletter, and give some background information about myself, including the places i've been published before. that gives you some credibility. make sure you cite your sources, and give them a word count.

does that help?

Oh, self publishing is worthless.
very rarely does a self published book make money, or get picked up by a real publisher.

as I just posted, the most i've made from short stories is $500. Readers digest pays that.

I had sent the first 2 chapters of my book to a publisher, without having an agent. they were/are very interested and told me to take my time finishing but to please see them first when i'm done. :)
so that's cool.

You have to get little things published first, and it may not (probably won't) pay much if anything. Publishers want to see some published articles under your belt and you will probably get tons of rejections, at first, even if your writing is good. If your writing is bad, you can count on being rejected.

My thesis has been submitted to the Journal of Treanspersonal Psychology.
Should find out in November. Cross your fingaz

Does anyone know anything about publishing, like, books? I've always understood the journal and magazine process, but really have no idea what is involved in getting an actual paper book published.

Dover seems to have a library of like millions of softcover books available down to the extremely esoteric, and usually for quite cheap, too. I wonder if getting a book or monograph in some strange subject published by Dover would be different than trying to get, say, a popular fiction book published by Random House? Surely there can't be much profit in publishing something like *googles* Cohomology Operations and Applications in Homotopy Theory.

Ron Harris just published a book. www.ronharrismuscle.com
I am sure he would be more than willing to explain the process he went through.

I've got 21 peer-reviewed published articles and 4 under review.
And here I have been thinking so highly of you to have 25, RoadWarrior misinformed me. Now I don't think MM is all that smart.
