has anyone ever been bear hunting?

good work out trying to catch your hounds.
really easy to simulate, got a broom stick put some waders on
and run thru the woods for a few miles.
then drag a log back

why would you wanna kill a bear? bear meat isn't that great to eat. i'm against killing animals just for fun.

we hunt black bears here in n.c. pa. . .we don't use dogs. . .it's pretty much like hunting anything else, you either drive them using some people as drivers and some people as watchers, or you just sit in your tree stand and wait.

i don't hunt as much as i used to. . .too busy. . .that said, i've hunted with a couple of parties when we got bear or two, i got some of the meat, it was actually surprisingly good.

i think it's good meat.

nobody does it just for the fun, you take the meat and hide for sure.
kinda ruthless how it is done...hounds tree it and you blast it out of the tree.
the hunt is keeping up with your dogs.
i'd feel bad for shooting it out of a tree

could you explain the drivers and watchers thing?

I heard you chase them on foot with dogs which sounds badass...

i went with a dude who was running his dogs to get them trained up.
it was fun as hell i thought...but i'm a pussy and would feel sorry for the bear.

I prob would too when I was at that point looking at it cowering in the tree and I was about to pull the trigger and blast it out of the tree...

you "drive" them out of the bush to the "watchers" who shoot them. . .meh. . .if you like hunting, it's exciting.

with dogs, you turn the dogs loose, they find a hot track, they track the animal, howling as they go, the closer together the barks get, the more excited the dogs are, the closer they are to the animal. . .when the barks become non-stop and you can tell that the dogs are no longer moving away from you, they have the animal "treed". . .you follow the noise until you find the dogs. . .you shoot the animal. . .i hunted racoons back in the day. . .coon hunting was big sport where i grew up. . .works pretty much the same way as hunting bears with a dog, except you're running around in the woods at night. . .if you are a hunter, i mean a "hunter", in that it's part of your spirit, part of your genetic make up, all hunting is exciting and satisfying to some extent or another. . .for me, there was something extra enticing about hunting with dogs. . .i can't really explain it. . .i always had beagles and i hunted rabbits quite a bit. . .but a lot of times, i would just take my dogs out and turn them loose, just to watch and listen to them work. . .it's fascinating, and for me it was always incredibly enjoyable.

I've eaten bear meat before.. not a fan. When I said just for fun, I was referring to people who trophy hunt. aka killing a bear to mount it.

I hunt and fish, so it's not like I'm against it. People bear bait/trap around here and I hate that shit. Takes zero skill.

baiting bears with cake frosting and donuts, and hunting on "trophy farms" is horseshit. . .and it makes me kind of sad that people call it "hunting" and non-hunters believe that it's hunting.

As an early teen my brother and I would put out a bunch of meat. We would then camp out on our upper balcony with our pellet guns waiting for a bear to come by for some hot dog dinner. Then we would unload out clip of pellets, and the bear would run away.

-Usually we would do this when we would have a bear try and eat at our garbage can a few nights in a row. Scared them away for a few days anyways.

Two or 3 years ago, we found a bear that was paralyzed in his hind legs. He had been dragging his legs for so long, they were worn down to the bone. Ended up shooting him, and dumping his body for the wolves.

That's the closest I've been to hunting them. See lots of them though.

that's incredibly dumb.

Put it out of its misery. Some other animal would have came by and made it more painful for the bear like a wolf or mountain cat.
I'm not talking about them killing the paralyzed bear.

I'm talking about purposely leaving meat out to lure bears for the sole purpose of shooting them with pellet guns.

wtf would you eat bear? damn....BEAR?

Think of it as a way to chase "trouble" bears away, not like we are luring random bears.

These were the bears that would have the habit of getting into our garbage, and needed to be taught a lesson. A couple pellets in the ass or letting the dog chase it up a tree, usually teaches the bear that it's not welcome to eat our garbage. Some don't get the message, and then traps may be set and the bear moved to a different location. If the bear still doens't get the message and comes back to town for more garbage, then it will be killed.

-bear meat is OK. Not my favorite.

the game commission here gives out shotgun shells with rubber projectiles in them for residents to use on nuisance bears (and elk). . .they don't do any damage but i imagine it smarts pretty good when you take a load in the ass (jeez...that sounds kinda :rainbow: )...anyway, if that doesn't work, then the game commission will trap the bear and move it...to someplace less populated...where they likely end up being a nuisance again.

me too.

i'm in a heavily bear populated area- i rarely go a week (and sometimes a day) without seeing one on my road.
i wouldn't want to run into one with her cubs, but I would never want to kill one (yes, unless it was attacking someone. duh).

I saw a bear eating sugar cane in a field about 100 yards from the road in Centerville, LA.

I pulled over and got out of my work truck and started yelling at him and throwing shit in his direction not straying too far from the truck's door.

He stopped and looked up at me once just to say, "fuck off", and continued to eat the sugar cane as if I weren't even there. :)

i chased my wife around the house nekkid the other night. . .does that count? oh. . .wait. . .you said "bear". . .nevermind.

how many dogs would you own at one time? that's a lotta work esp with hounds they eat and shit and howl a fug load.
and agree with the dogs and their synergy on the hunt, esp hounds.
dumb as fug individually but they come together like voltron and form an incredible mass of senses.

this guy i work with was in the woods a while ago cutting some firewood...had his quad and a rifle.
he turned his saw off and noticed a cougar (the cat not smurfy) stalking up on him.
all low to the ground with his tail flicking around...my bro started up his saw and reved it, but
the cat kept coming slowly...so the dude got on his quad and bailed out.
cats are cool

think of it as habituating bears to human contact. you do realize bears can smell food for miles away right? luring any animal for the sole purpose of harming it (and not killing it) is stupid. you need to bungie your trash cans if you are having wild animals rummage through them.. regardless of the animal.

I have killed several black bears with my bow. Not much diffrent from killing anything else. I only hunt with a bow these days.

wow. talk about adrenaline after being stalked by a cougar.
I couldn't shoot a bear, but if I got attacked by a grizzly I hear you are supposed to smack it on the nose as hard as you can.

your way off base red. All the local bears are already habituated to human presence in the area. They smell our cooking food daily, and have for the last 100 years. For the most part, they know that they need to keep their distance. However, there are problem bears that develop a appetite for garbage, and will go door to door, every night looking for trash.

These bears need to receive negative reinforcement, in order to break them of their bad habits. Sometimes the bears get the message, sometimes they don't. If they don't it's usually bad news for the bear.

Sending the dog out after them to scare them away, shooting them with pellets (which wouldn't even penetrate the bears fur), airhorns, whatever scares them away, can help to keep them away.

As much as it sounds cruel, it's a good thing for the bear. Considering the alternative of having it killed.

Ok.. I live in British Columbia in the Mountains, litterally! In the spring and fall we have bears in our yard every year... You are right on target..

Nobody here calls the CO (conservation officers) for bears unless they want the bear shot, and they don't.. We just use common sense.. Never put your garbage out until the morning of pick up.. Im my case I have to take my own garbage to the dump. Pick all the fruit off your trees as it ripens... Usually though the bears will eat it unripe anyways..

Here's a few pics I shoot while my brother and I and a couple of the kids were out quading... These pics are taken about 15 from my house.

Quading

On any given day you can see Bear, Elk, Moose, sheep, goats, Mule and white tail deer, turkeys etc etc...

I take a bear every year for food.. In BC however, you are not allowed to bait any animal.

And for what it's worth, if any wild animal attacks you, fight for your life! Otherwise, it will kill you, end of the story! DO NOT play dead w/ a bear... It will kill you anyways...

i've seen a ton of bears up in the woods in wisconson EM.

I wouldn't f#$% with a bear.

black bears are pussies though they can be startling.
grizzlies are canterkorus...it's the cougs that i worry about esp around my home and work (the cats not smurfy).
they can creep up on you and though it's rare they do attack good bros.
something terrifying about a cat stalking you, esp since you are obvlivious
and whoever mentioned the town of nelson, i read a story in rolling stone about some mtn bike riding/heli flying weed smuggler.
interesting story, the kid eventually got caught and hung himself in jail

are elk and mooses (meese?) dangerous?

EZ, I grew up in Nelson. Great little 4 season town. One of the best small towns, pretty much anywhere.

Bino, I remember that story. I didn't know sam. Heard lots of good things about him as a person, but flying drugs across the border was a mistake. The guy loved to ride his bike and has built many trails/features around the kootenays.

This is Sam and one of his creations. You ride in one side, the wheel turns and lets you out the other. It's weighted so when you ride out, it swings back into the starting position for the next rider.

They can both be seriously dangerous during the rut..

yeah the reason I ask is because I had some family who visited Canada not long ago and they slowed down to have a look at this moose on the side of the road (they didn't get out) but some cars driving past were flashing the lights as if to warn of danger

yeah....probably not a great idea. they're quite large.

considering bears are protected in many areas, probably not most people.

i have no idea why anyone would want to kill a black bear specifically, other than being an poucher.

grizzly or kodiak is one thing because they are extremely aggressive, but black bears are very timid

poacher.
and bear meat is hella good, that's why people want to kill bears.
i'd bet every state has legalized bear hunting

texas, oaklahoma and missori are the only ones i've heard of and i bet the feds still might give a few permits out to problem bears.
nigs kill bears around here all the time for causing a threat supposedly.
i'd never want to kill a bear, but i'll eat the meat

Yes, ppl will flash you if there are animals on the road.. In fact, more ppl die from hitting deer w/ their cars then any other wild animal incidents in BC every year.
