Got a call last night from a friend and he said he had a couple of practice round tickets for today to the US Open in Pinehurst.

Needless to say, I took him up on his offer. We drove up there this morning and drove up to a house that was located on #1 fairway/green. We got out and told them who we were and they asked for the car keys to our car.

The valet took our car and parked it in a restricted parking lot and they put us in a van and drove us up to the front gate and gave us our tickets. They told us when we were ready to leave to just come back to the entrance and they would pick us up and take us to our car. Very sweet deal!

We got there kind of late. Tiger teed off at 7:00 am this morning and was off the course by about 9:30. It was so friggen hot today that it was almost not fun at all. Went and made a few purchases and walked around and saw a few golfers brave enough to play in the heat of the day.

Left the course around 2:30 pm and came on home. Another friend has Sunday tickets but I think I would rather watch it on TV. It is boiling here in the south.

Who are you rooting for this year at the Open?

I would like to see Davis Love or maybe an unknown win it. Let's bet some karma on this tourney.

I'm going swimming and will be back later tonight. See ya!:)

davis love?
hmmmmm what bout tiger or vijay?
should i add him to my thingy?

Nah! They have won enough for awhile. Time for new blood to win something.:)
well im not doing so well on my yahoo thing....i need to turn it around somehow

how were they playing? any hot tips?
all i hear is that about +10 is going to win it this year unless it rains, which will soften up the greens
right now im 52nd overall in yahoos fantasy golf (out of about 70,000), klu is in 20,430th place tee hee
heres my cut and paste rank:
Points: 3003
Overall Rank: 52
Percentile: 99th
heres who i took this week
starters: mickelson, verplank, dimarco, and funk
on the bench: tiger, maggert, leonard, and toms
id like to see phil win since he doesnt have an open title

A lot of my coworkers are at the Open - we have some chalets and tents there. I'll be at the Barclays Classic next week. Golf tourneys are fun to hang out at.

There really weren't enough players playing to say someone was playing good or not. Did follow Davis Love around a couple of holes. #5 a 565 yard par 5...his second shot wound up about 5 feet from the pin. Those guys are so long off the tee that it is just scary!

I would say something close to even or even a few over will win this one. Secondary rough is thick as molasses. If someone gets in it, par is out of the question. We watched the grounds crew hose down several greens (Keeping them from burning up in the heat) and I mean they friggin' soaked the greens and players were immediately hitting their shots into the green and the greens were still very, very fast.

I don't think any rain is expected unless there is a stray thunderstorm but I think the course will soak up that water with no problem. Supposed to cool down a little by Sunday. These guys will be miserable out there the next couple of days playing in this heat.

That is a very nice ranking in the fantasy golf deal. Sounds like you have done your homework well. Never count Phil out of anything as well as Vijay. Dimarco has been playing pretty good lately. Verplank...I just don't know. Funk is always a favorite of mine but I don't think he has the long game needed. 7214 yard course and a 70 par.

Tiger is always in the hunt! I saw Toms today for a few holes and he was striking the ball well. Thursday-Sunday is a different story though. I'm going to say Love as my first pick, then Phil and then Vijay and then Tiger.

good analysis
i know funks not long but he hits the driver straight and that is going to be key this week with that rough
hopefully the course is going to play fast enough that he can get a decent roll with his driver
the thing with the fantasy golf is that you can only use a player 10x a year so you have to conserve their starts, so you cant go out there and put out the big boys every week
plus golfers are assigned to three different groups (a,b,c) you have to use one "a" two "bs" and one "c" each week, they set up which golfers are in which group in the begining of the year and they stay in that group the entire year
only your starters score counts for your score each day so if your bench guy goes low and your starter hacks it around it will really piss you off
you can swap the starter for the guy on the bench any day you wish but once you start them it counts as one of your 10 alloted starts for the year
also if both of your guys in a group miss the cut you will get 0 for their score on saturday and sunday, thats a real killer
a lot of strategy involved in it

Damn that makes your ranking even nicer. I never really looked into fantasy golf but by the sound of it, you are cruising along pretty good.

How many points seperate you from 1st place?

Almost every green at Pinehurst has some elevation to it. Some more so than others. I saw several greens that sloped severely from back to front with false fronts on them. It will be real easy for the pros to send their second shots onto the green and the spin will take them off the front of the green into a collection area.

The person who will score well as it is right now without any rain will have to hit their ball short of the green and foward momentum will roll it up on the green. That is what Davis did on that par 5. His second shot was a long iron and he landed it about 20 yards short and it rolled up onto the green and the slope took care of the rest until it was about 5 feet from the cup.

The funny thing is, is that when he walked up to the green he bent down and picked up his ball and went to another area of the green and started putting around to see the breaks. I guess he was superstitous about putting in an eagle in a practice round...lol

I saw a lot of players rolling their approach shots onto the green instead of sticking them except par 3's. KJ Choi and Marayamo were playing together and they were actually finishing each hole and they were playing well.

Short game will be paramount in saving par this week. The greens are so slick. I will say that there is a ton of difference between The Masters and the US Open course(Pinehurst). No comparison. Masters is hands down a whole level above Pinehurst in being manicured to a tee. Awesome courses though.

i think im around 100pts out of first now, this is the 20th tourney of the year for us and they do 40 for the year so this is the halfway point, the overall leader has pissed away a lot of his big gun starts for the year, hes used vijay 8x already and ive only used him 4x, and vijay has 6 tourneys left this year where he is the defending champ (its not a coincidence that i have the 6 starts left for him and hes the defending champ in 6 more tourneys heehee), he wont finish in the top 200 when the year is up, since he will be using hacks later in the year
i read an article about pinehurst last month that when the course was made the greens were basically the same level as the fairway but 30 years of top dressing the greens made them rise up over the years to the level they are at now (they dont top dress them anymore)
they even had pics of the course from the 1930s and you can totally tell the difference on how much higher the greens are now

Sounds like you are sitting in a good position for the remainder of the year. Good luck with that.

Didn't know that about the greens and top dressing. That is interesting. I thought the course was designed like that.

There is another course in Pinehurst that is supposedly nice than Pinehurst #2. I think it is Pinehurst #7 and I heard it is very pristine. Will be interesting if they can somehow play an Open on that course in the future.

The guy I went with today used to live in Pinehurst in the late 80's - early 90's. He said a friend of his was one of the assistant pros there and they played all the Pinehurst courses all the time for $3.00 per round. Amazing!

lol at $3 a round, damn how much is it now?
im sure #2 greens fees are the most
i read a little bit about 7 and 8 i heard they are supposed to be nice

lol....I have no idea what it is now but it might be a bit more than $3.

They had a lot of Payne Stewart memorabilia on display in the merchandise tent.
One in particular was a huge actual picture of the 18th green taken from it looks like on top of a camera crane of Payne sinking that final putt on the 18th to win the tournament and he is in that posed position standing on one leg with his putter in one hand and his fist punching outward the last time it was played at Pinehurst.

The frame and picture must be about 3 feet high and about 8 feet long and you can see the whole gallery and Phil walking towards Payne and Payne in that position. Kind of like this picture but more surrounding features...
