guitar set up question

i havent had my guitar set up in over a year, or changed the strings for that matter... i do clean then everyday, tho.. but lately i feel either there is something wrong with the string, or im getting sloppy... im getting discourage.. is it bad that the strings are that old? can it really effect your playing? its mostly when i play fast licks.. the strings seem loose and vibrate way too much and its hard to catch the string when playing inward picking etc... im getting it set up tomaro, but has anyone else noticed or heard of this?

is it an acoustic? if so even with regular electrics they need to be hung by the neck to help keep them straight or the strings combined with leaning them against the wall will cause it to warp. if it is an acoustic bring it to a guitar shop and they will turn that rod that is inside of the neck to straighten it out.
