Going to start lifting again, gear temptation pretty high...

After my first 2 years in the Army, I'm down 40 lbs because of only sporatic time in the gym and a deployment to Iraq. I'm finally going to be able to spend regular time in the gym and am really looking forward to it. It just sucks that I feel like I'm going to be starting over. I'm hoping to be able to put on at least a pound a week just by eating big, working out with large compound movements and taking creatine.

But I gotta say it's really tempting to set up a lose dose test run. I know my body isn't ready and I don't need it to make gains, but the temptation is still there.

Anyone else go through this after a large amount of time off?

Starting over can be a good experience if you have the right mental attitude. Think of it as having a chance to build an awesome foundation from the ground up. No more, "I wish I would have focused more on compound movements when I started out," type of talk. Now you can do whatever you want and build your body correctly. After the foundation is built and your muscles, joints, tendons, and mind are working in unison... throw some gear into the mix and watch out.

If you start out relying on gear to add some quick weight you will be giving in to an addictive personality... a "get rich quick" solution that will be short lived. Focus on how much better your body will respond to the gear after you are a well oiled machine. Then you can run a solid cycle and make use of your receptors.

Good luck.

i was gonna post a reply but after reading dragons reply i think he hit it right on the head just be patient bro you be there sonn enough good luck

AAS = performance ENHANCER

If you don't have a performance what are you going to enhance ?

I suggest you build a good base before juicing.

I know, I know. I have said that same thing many times. It just sucks to be back at square 1. I like Dragonl4's comment, "No more, 'I wish I would have focused more on compound movements when I started out,' type of talk. Now you can do whatever you want and build your body correctly." My main area of weakness has always been my middle traps and no I have the chance to build them in conjunction with my back and not always be trying to have them catch up.

I plan on focusing almost exclusively on compound movements and programs like the Old School and HST (which I just learned about today and want to try). I just needed that dose of reality. With everything I learned on my first trip up, I should be back where I was in about a year, which was 6'2" and 225 lbs with 10% bf.

I've been in the same situation in the past...the best you can do is start eating well, sleeping well and of course working out well. Make it your religion. Start to recover your natural strenght and mass. If everything goes well you can think about some help in a short time. The motivation, recovery is always faster. Just close your eyes and do it. Good luck.

I feel you, bro.

I felt this way after basic and AIT, but there was a base gym when I was deployed to Bosnia, so I was lucky in that respect. I think you have the right mindset, just put all your effort in to compound movements and focus on your form and strength and the results will come. It would be best to focus on 4 sets pers bodypart and just try to build back up your muscular endurance. Ease up on your cardio, except mandatory formation runs and you'll be STR8. I don't think you need to run a cycle right now, it's best to get your foundation set and once you get back to where you left off, then considering your options. I wish you the best, bro.

See what the army does to you, makes you into a stick. 225lb-40=185@6'2, damn that's skinny.

Dude don't say that. If he lost weight is due to life circunstances. The Army does nothing to do with it. That's more important than playing with weights. And I forgot to say THANK YOU to frorider6.2 for your sacrifice. Mission accomplished bro. We all support your work. Our country is safer and stronger thanks to people like you. And of course thanks to the people that works hard inside the country to build this nation.

I think you will be surprised at the muscle memory you have stored. I think the muscle will come back pretty quick and you will be happy you didn't jump the gun!
Good Luck!

Our country is safe? I thought this whole time we were after Bin Laden? He's the one that attacked us, not IRAQ. And dont you forget it!

According to your flag, "our country" is 'Belaris'? lol

Keep in mind that muscle memory is going to play a huge roll in your initial gains one you start again. I would not be suprised if you experienced rapid strength and size gains if your diet and training is on.

If the size was there naturally once you will get it back even faster this time. Gear is a great suplement but that is all it is. Until you are sure you are back to stay and that you can make the firm commitment required to make consistent gains don't waste them money. The temptaion is always going to be there. It's like anything else worth having though. The longer you wait the sweeter it is.
