Giving up drinking.

Hey fellas,

I was wondering if any of you guys are teetotallers? I have been thinking about giving up or severely cutting back my drinking for a while now. I'm fed up with hangovers disrupting other things that I want to do and I don't get the buzz from it that I used to get in my teens from a night of drinking. It's getting to the stage where I'd much rather spend time lifting or doing a sport or an activity than go out and get boozed up.

My main worry is how my friends will react to this. It seems that drinking is so ingrained in our culture (Scotland, the drinking capital of Europe!) that it is hard to avoid and people who don't do it are often seen as outcasts. My friends are still young (mid twenties) but a lot of them are already beginning to develop bad habits that are going to catch up with them sooner or later. I'm talking about heavy drinking three or four times a week. I guess if they are real mates they will understand! I still want to go out and have a good time, just not drink.

Any thoughts or comments?

Just because society is doin it bro doesnt mean you have to. Remember, if you fuck up or die, society's gonna keep doing it's thang.

Don't let your drinking bros down. Sure excessive drinking increases your chances of an untimely demise, but sometimes you have to take one for the team.

if they dont like you because you dont want to drink and act numb any more than are they really the type of "friends" that you want???????

fuck that!

Don't listen to them bor.

You got to show up at every drinking occasion and show them you're a real man and drink all those wussies under the table.

you won't see them as much

you will have nothing in common

if the hangover are effecting you, you must be gettin pretty drunk

try setting a number (3) and sticking to it

I quit drinking back about 10 years ago. Just lost the drive. Sure, some of my friends left. But then, I got'em back when I pissed over their graves after their DUI deaths. The fuckers.

are any of you assholes a bigger alkie than me?? i doubt it. but this goes out to the thread starter, :Don't be a fucking pussy.

Wow....

I thought it was cool to see your age after what you wrote. I think drinking for many of us wherever we live is fairly engrained in the culture of the young twenty-somethings...

It is sometimes hard to fit in with a group of people who are spending their social time together doing one thing. If they were all skydivers for example and you were terrified of heights, well - you get the picture.

If these are true friends outside of the event of drinking, then they will understand. But you have to understand there may be resentment and you may lose some closeness with some of them. On the other hand, one or more may wish to join you if you are going to take up another activity they wish to be a part of. You never know how it will go. Its your choice in the end.

Make it the choice thats best for 'you' because everyone else is going to do exactly that.

I hope you're joking that your friends will stop hanging out with you. It's sad if drugs (alcohol) are the focus of your friendships.

Wow. You should write books or sumthin'.

I'm kinda in the same boat. Everytime I take a break from drinking I slowly lose contact with most of my friends. Seems to be all people my age do on weekend nights. Especially in the winter. I can't go to bars sober either. Not only is it extremely boring and annoying, but social anxiety is a bitch. Not to mention not having a steady live in gf anymore, there really isn't shit to do.
