Girl Drama + Weight Loss

Ugh, I give up, the other day I hit a wall with a good friend of mine. We decided to throw a 4th of July party and invite our crushes to a picnic. Everything was going fine until she suggested we go swimming at the lake… I could have killed her! She knows I am self-conscious, and of course she’s perfect in every way… but I talked with my mom and she said I can’t blame her, so I’ve decided to go for it and tackle my over-weight issues head on, its no one else’s problem but mine alone! I have to do it. I have started watching the new Rocco Dispirito show on Bravo recently and have heard that he is going to start walking us through a new healthy diet that will help out. With his Watch and Win contest, its given me some incentive but, tonight he’s bringing on some fitness experts… has anyone heard of them? Joe Dowdell and Betty Wong? Let me know!

bro, idk who the fuck jow dowdell and betty wong are, but i sure as well wouldn't listen to betty fuckin wong if i wanted to get in shape... I'd listen to guys who have been in your situation and gotten into good shape in similar situations here on EF. I've always been in good shape so i can't empathize with you, but i was in a similar position with a girl. I've never had any problem picking up girls, but this girl was the "different one" for me. Anyways, enough about me, but i used her to motivate the shit out of me in the gym, and i think you should do the same.

first off, you gotta take care of your diet. Diet = the most important part of the battle when fighting off weight, and for many, the hardest. What does your current diet look like on an average day? don't be afraid to say it honestly even if you eat fuckin doritos for every meal; people are here to help.

are you currently working out with weights/doing cardio?

also, what are your stats (height, weight, age)

lastly, girls are emotional motherfuckers. I know guys who are really good looking who have little success picking up girls, and guys who look like a gorillas anus (ok, maybe a little better) who get girls who are "out of their league". Be smooth, confident/cocky, but not just a huge cock, tease them, touch them, and you'll be good to go. Don't let your weight or any insecurities keep you from getting a girl you want. Everyone is his/her own worst critic, so keep your head up bro

EDIT: I just saw that you're a female, so disregard the 'bros' and the part about getting girls hahha

Jdid, your post was hilarious.

Sorry fashionista! it's not often i see a female venture into these forums, so please forgive me for addressing you as a guy. The principles are still the same though, and i wish you the best of luck :) please dont be discouraged by my idiocy

Yeah, just be cocky , but not too big of a cock, and everything will be just fine.

Follow the advice above, and me leary of fitness "experts".

heres wat you

put on some running shoes, walk out ur front door and go for a RUN, dont worry if you cant run far, wen u run outa breathe walk abit and then start running again, aim for 1.5 mile a day in the start, and work your way up to 3

everyday eat vegies, lean meats and fish, and water, and dotn eat ANY junk food

go gym 3 times a week and do full bodyworkouts,

youll loose weight faster then you ever thought possible, and tone up aswell

^^^ the perfect program for weight loss right here... simple and to the point..

unless the person has thyroid problems they will see a difference within 2 weeks doing this.

I would even throw out all meat except baked dry chicken and add lots of fruits and nuts.

Haha, no worries to Jdid and the rest of you. I am glad to get your advice, (Partially why I came) and I like the above idea, but a lot of my girl friends are really getting into the "Now Eat This! Diet" by Rocco Dispirito. We've been watching his show pretty religiously and that reminds me its on at 10 tonight on bravo, I need to Tivo it. Would you guys mind taking a look at it and doing some research to see if is a good solution to go with? Just eating dry baked chicken all day every day seems like it will be hard to stomache after the 2nd day... it seems like it would get really repetitive and boring...

Let me know guys!
Thanks for chiming in!

There's tuna, salmon, and an occasional steak too! Don't bash it till you try it... (ok it does suck at first, but you get used to it)

As for your crush, if you want him, just send body language messages, like being near him occasionally, smiling lightly when he notices you, stuff like that, but don't ALWAYS be near him, and do this to other guys too... crushes are overrated, why is one guy the object of your attention? Don't put all your eggs in one basket (haha, quite literally :))

Yo! Queer bait! I did read the original post, and just went back and reread it twice just to be sure, maybe she does like girls, but I don't see that in the orignal post... so fuck you! (sorry to flame on your thread sweetie!)

i just googled him and he seems to be pretty well-known. However, i couldn't find his diet plan so i can't comment on that. I'm sure he has some good advice and is at least somewhat reputable if he has a television show. Having said that, i wouldn't spend money on the book when we can help you construct a diet and help you follow it here/give you advice based on your results. If you really want to do the diet with some of your friends, then by all means go for it since they will help to keep you motivated. What does his diet entail? Also, most diets do get boring and repetitive, but people must make sacrifices in order to make gains in many aspects in life. Also, you don't have to have the same meals every day. For example, instead of eating dry baked chicken everyday, you can eat salmon or tilapia or tuna... instead of eating brown rice all the time, have some sweet potatoes.... you can definitely mix it up, those are just 2 examples.

The funny thing is your friend is probably self conscious too in some way. Everyone is sometimes, so don't compare yourself to her. Don't ever compare yourself to anyone.
It sounds like you have a good attitude towards starting off on a fitness program, and so i'll just say this: whatever you decide to do, stick with it. Keep it simple, and don't give up. It does not have to get complicated.

1) Get moving and sweaty every day for at least 30 minutes. Walk, run, swim, bike, skip etc. At least 4 of those days should be hard, and leave you feeling like you couldn't do anymore.
In addition, lift weights 2-4 times a week.
2) No more sweets, chips, candy, cake or junk food. No soda pop. Drink water.
3) Whatever you're used to eating normally, eat half. Eat more protein in general. Unlimited vegetables.
4) Get lots of sleep, you'll need it :)

pics or your gorgeous.....

i have heard SO MANY girls say this. its really desensitizing me.

im starting a diet myself and im telling you KEEP MOTIVATED, if you really want good advice 1 in ur the right place 2 u have already got what i was going to say, about lean meats, veggies etc, water.. w.e all great info

but for the relationship advice, right now i have 2 girls on the go... frankly, if u make this guy the object of ur attention and u dont have any other guy lying around.. in the begining stages
mention other men (a few 1-2 ) as competition playfully... i had this done to me the other day, and its a great OPENING for the guy to brag about himself, and for u to playfully say 'maybe.' or your right ' you are cuter than him but..... ' this adds some doubt, and some easy flirting.

second of all, if you think he likes him.. maybe its just me but im TELLING YOU. add some assertiveness or aggression i have gotten sick and tired of chasing, if u chase back at LEAST alittle, i swear to u.. he will like it, what guy doesnt like feeling cute/wanted once in a while? i mean hell lets appeal to mens laziness... girls coming after us? WOW SWEET!

also if you can spend time alone, and get to know him, that will help, and your attention to your body.. he will lie, but it will arouse him.. my ex would go to the gym with me and some times i would watch her sweat, stretch, lift weights, and try her hardest, she was playful sometimes and talked more than she worked, but she made me feel like an expert at everything, and she also looked attractive because she cared about her body, and did something about it, also take a shot at his manhood if he doesnt hit the weights that often :)

also: playful always wins with flirting,

wow sorry longwinded, but good luck!

i'm gifting you a plat fashionista, also check out the women's section and check out the diet section

I endorse what bloke recommended, I also let myself go in my early 20's and then lost 35 pounds in like 5 weeks using a similar diet he listed. lots of fresh fruit, veggies, nuts... and no dairy, processed, pasta's, fats, sugars.

Awesome, thanks Stevesmi!
as for everyone else, it all sounds like good information. I am going to start posting my daily intake for critique (SO NERVOUS!!!) but I am still going to watch the Rocco Show, partly because I want to win the Watch and Win Contest... and beat my friends :) If any of you guys want to chime in after watching we can maybe answer the questions together... last night the answers I came up with were:

What is the name of the book that Chef Rocco wrote and gave out to his guests?
Answer: Now Eat This! Diet

How many calories are the chefs allotted per dish?
Answer: 350 Calories

What 4 dishes does Jeffrey Ross ask the competing chefs to make?
Answer: Chicken Salad, Pot Roast, Matzah Brei, Cheesecake

And, since today is my first day--- this is what I've had thus far.
1 Arizona Sweet Tea (Just about the only thing I'll drink besides lemonade and water)
1 regular plain bagel with cream cheese :(
4 cubes of water melon

---I usually bring healthy start chicken and rice pre-packed snacks you can buy...

Also, just so others know, I have recently moved and am working two jobs back to back and have long commutes thrown in there as well so I get little "Me" time to go shopping for good food, However this weekend I'd like to go and buy a bunch of crap in bulk. Could some of you make some suggestions of what to buy? I can maybe hit up a whole foods, Trader Joes, or maybe some local convenient stores or a local deli... the last two are the closest and most easiest to get too.

^^^Arizona sweet tea is full of sugar. it has high fructose corn syrup. please read ingredients before you buy anything in the future. if it has hydrogenated oils, soybean oil, corn syrup then stay away!! in fact let me simplify things for you...

you need to drink just water!! and a lot of it.. the more you drink the better

get rid of the bagel and cream cheese.

this is what you should eat for breakfast

FRUIT, veggies and water.

lunch... fruit, veggies, water, maybe a baked chicken breast DRY

dinner... veggies lots of them and water.

in between snacks veggies, fruit, water.

drink half gallon a day of water atleast. its a lot for a girl but you can do it.

this is a classic catabolic diet that I have recommended over the years to many people.. it will work for anybody.

what the hell? what do yuo really expect to happen if you tell someone to eat fruit veg and water every day all day?

1. they will hate it within a few days and go find the latest fad diet that allows them to eat real food

2. they will spend all day craving real food

3. they will lack energy all day

no disrespect but I disagree

also why would you recomend a catabolic diet? catabolic = muscle wasting... the less muscle someone has the slower their metabolism. With a higher metabolism she could eat more making the diet less grueling...

I dont really get the idea behind your advice here, I would be interested to hear the reason behind it all...

I would not add LOTS of nuts ;) but yeah if you want to "lose weight" and it doesn't matter whether it's muscle or fat, a mostly vegetarian diet would do it. As long as it's not just pasta all the time. All those old-fashioned "diets" work, but you have to stick with them and exercise your patootie off. You can lose twenty or thirty pounds really quickly this way. And then build up muscle properly afterwards.
Grapefruit, cottage cheese, tomato juice, fish, unbuttered/unoiled vegetables, undressed salad. There you go, that's a weight loss diet. No bagels for pete's sake ;)
I see the appeal for Rocco Dispirito, and he's cute too, so I can see how you'd want to watch, but he does a lot of low-fat stuff which I always try to avoid as it usually has more sugar/starch in it. maybe cherry pick those recipes.
The main thing is to start.

i used this diet to drop 35 pounds myself. and i'm not saying eat just that... you can eat lean meats as i stated above. this is just a base of what most of her diet should be if she wants to lose weight.

this diet DOES speed up the metabolism, her metabolism and energy will be sky high. this is a similar diet that weight watchers puts people on, and that is a pretty damn good diet with the points system.

you need to be a little more open to things, she isn't a bodybuilder or a lifter.. her goals are to lose weight... and this diet will do it pure and simple..

she will not crave food necessarily, but she will crave fats. this is why i recommend drink a lot of water and I'm sure you understand that drinking water will shut off the brain from feeling hungry..

again I'm not saying just eat fruits, veggies, water... you need to re-read what i posted and not look at things in just black and white. I'm saying MOST of the things she would eat should be those things. i would say 75%. and then overtime she can gradually re-introduce other foods back in moderation.

i use this diet myself when i am cutting off cycle, and look at my avi. <<<<< i see a lot of muscle on that frame so not sure where you get the whole muscle wasting theory from. in fact this might come as a shock but as I've stated many times on this forum I am mostly a vegan. and I'm eating some rasberries as I write :)

it all boils down to a LIFESTYLE change. if you want to drink Arizona sweet tea then you are gonna have a tough time losing weight. most people DO NOT eat enough fruits and veggies this is a fact. which is why we have an obesity and diabetes epidemic

its no different advice than telling guys who are 6 feet and 150 pounds to not juice and to start working out. thats the advice people give all the time, I could use your arguement on that too. "HEY you are guys are nuts? seriously? this guy never works out and now you want him to workout 4X per week? i disagree! "

well unfortunately diet + working out are the #1 things.. if you aren't willing to change your diet and TRY then you won't reach your goals.

my aproach for those who like to eat whatever they want...
...workout like a madman...
...that way you can enjoy life...
really though, to the OP, you do not need that dramatic of a diet to make some change to your body...
drinking nothing but water, and running/jogging 30min a day is a good start... after 6 weeks see where that puts you, and then decide from there what you would like to change to progress...

if you take it to the extreme in one jump, you may not like it and quit...

Emphasizing the water...

You do not want to be drinking your calories. Drinking anything but water is basically empty calories that you need to work off. Water is all you need, the human species has survived solely on water for generations. It what we are meant to drink, best part is: it has zero calories.

I bet that if you switch all your lemonade and sugary beverages out for water you could see results just through that.

+1 this is what I preach and teach ...

All good advice above. I'm going to go a slightly different route, and some may not agree with what I say. There is more than one way to skin a cat, as they say. (Disclaimer: I am in no way advocating the skinning of cats.)

There is a reason South Beach, Atkins, low-carb diets are so popular... they are easy to understand and they WORK. That said, I am not a huge fan of them out of the box, so here's my recommendation:

Most of your calories come from lean protein sources say 60%:
Chicken
Tuna
Lean cuts of beef
Salmon
(Really, most unprocessed fish I fine)
Turkey

Eat enough carbs that your energy levels don't plummet during exercise (30%):
Vegetables, as many as you want, these are free
Whole grain breads, pasta
Brown and wild rice
Steel cut or rolled oats
Quinoa

You probably will get enough fats from your regular diet that you don't need to seek more out, but if you start craving fatty food (10%):
Small handful of nuts, avoid peanuts and pistachios
Olive oil on salad, veggies, or whole grains

The most important thing is tracking what you eat everyday. I do it with a free app on my phone for every meal -- I have a log of basically everything I've eaten for the last 2 months+. Be aware of the ingredients in the foods you eat. Avoid products that are "instant," processed, or containing hydrogenated oils, corn syrup, and lots of words you can't pronounce.

Good luck! Remember that on this board there's a whole horde of people with the necessary knowledge willing to help. No question is a bad question.

Ive looked throught the "Eat This Not That" books, and just like Stevesmi said they are overall pretty solid, portion control and good macro ratios, etc... but the truth is they are a watered down version of the most effective way to do it. Period. Now if you want to compromise, which is fine, then this is a good plan, but DO NOT expect results that you will like that much without regular, vigorous excercise (NO I do not mean barely idling on the elliptical while you read US Weekly for 20 minutes, I mean EXCERCISE!!).

The other side of this coin is this - many people want the faster results more than they think. I mean that, no matter whether they say they dont want to do the hardcore diet/excecise thing, if given the choice of GARUNTEED results in a few months of strict eating (which isnt that hard, it just sounds hard!!) and intense workouts, or going on a mild diet that they dont have to change their lifestyle for but see very few or slow results, not only do they discover they have a new passion, but the results and rate of gains (or losses, when desired - although I count that as a gain!) are much more motivational than getting through a few months of just eating somewhat better, not making any lifestyle changes, and losing a couple of pounds... NOW which one sounds like a waste of time?

It sounds like you and your girlfriends are pretty dead set on this diet, so the short answer is yes it is a good diet - but if you just take the time to learn about nutrition and how food affects the body, you will be infinitely more successful. The nutrition basics you can find on this site, if you just follow them, will far outweigh what you can learn reading that book - but its up to you. It is not a diet that is a waste of time or bunk, if that is what you are asking! Best of luck

she suggested we go swimming at the lake… I could have killed her! She knows I am self-conscious, and of course she’s perfect in every way…

You're lucky bro-ette, she like's you. I think she's letting you know she's not hesitant to be seen with you when the clothes come off. Plus she's giving you some extra motivation to change over to a healthier lifestyle. :jenscat

here is the bottom line, we have an obesity epidemic in this country and its simply because of the stuff we are putting in our bodies. even if you exercise you will not lose weight by eating that crap, i see people at the gym who are fat in there everyday working out. diet is #1. so the idea is simple.. you must eliminate the things that are making you fat and replace them with things that will SPEED up your metabolism.

now there are exceptions to the rule, people who eat slop and junk and still stay skinny... but they are people who have extremely fast metabolism or people like Moya who are always moving around all day for their jobs and getting hours of exercise. most of us have jobs where we sit on our asses all day so for us we must make sure to get in our exercise after work and also eat solid.
