Getting Preached at today at the Gym

stinky thumbs

New member
I've never had this happen to me before ever at the gym, nor have I ever had anybody else experience this either. Today I was finishing up my abs with some roman chair knee ups when this guy came up to me real politely and tried striking up a conversation with me. He just seemed like a nice person to me until he started talking about how Jesus saved him and stuff along with a bunch of other holy roller stuff. Now I am by no means atheist or anything and do think of myself as a Christian but what the hell is somebody going around preaching this at a gym for? Especially to me who is obviously busy getting an intense workout in. I don't think the gym is a place to go recruiting people to go to your church. What do you bros think about all this?

Yep, I know the type. Very scary people. I once took an english class with a biblical theme in school. It fit my schedule perfectly so I went with it thinking we were going to analyse texts from the bible objectively. Boy was I wrong. My teacher was a fundamentalist who beleived the bible word for word. 3/4 of the class belonged to the christian fellowship club or whatever the hell it was. They spend their time trying to recruit people. One guy was also in my physics class. He started talking to me.

One time, he passed me a note. It said: What is truth? I tore it, didn't say anything. 15 mins later, another note: Have you accepted Jesus in your life?. I tore it, looked at him funny. 10 mins later, another note: God loves you or some shit. I got up, grabbed him by the collar and nearly beat the shit out of him. This was in front of the entire class. I'll never forget his pathetic face praying to Jesus when I grabbed him.

Most Christians who are "on fire for the lord" as they put it, believe anywhere is a good place to share the thing thats has made them happy and has changed their life. If you can see it from their point of view, they are excited and just want to share.

It's like, if you just started working out and feel so good about it that you try to get people to change there lazy junk food eating lifestyle and get their ass to the gym.

They will soon chill out and be more tactfull about who they are preaching to and where. And they will realize they are just turning people off with their "hard sell". They will find more effective ways of reaching people.

I grew up in the church and have seen many people go through this cycle. They are just happy and want to share.

Someday I'll get my ass back to church.

I used to work with a guy like this, always preaching and trying to shove his beliefs down everyone's throat. He would even put a tape into the tape deck of the truck on the way to a job site and blast it and refuse to turn it off. I refused to work with him it got so bad. It pissed me off, even though I'm a born again Christian just like he is, but I have more respect for people than to go around force feeding everyone what I beleive in.

BigAndy, I hear you, they can be scary.

Furious, Exactly, you can't shove you beliefs down peoples throats. Some of the most SOLID Christians I know get erratated by this "newbe" behaviour.

i agree with you t bone. they're just happy and want to share. i too am a christian and i will share, but at the right time only. i do not go forcing my beliefs on others.

I’m sure is intentions were sincere!

Always be polite and simply state your own beliefs and thank the person for their concern.

I would be a lot more annoyed

if somebody at the gym tried to sell me crack or E,

then try to save my soul!

lol @ t-bone. your a funny, dude. i've had the same shit happen to me at the gym.....actually to one of my workout partners. he was doing a heavy set and at the end he put the weight down and was like " Jesus Christ" or something.. and this dude walked up to him and pointed his finger at him and was practically in his face and was like "dont EVER use my lord name in vein" and went on and on about how the devil is in him and all this bs. me and my friend were taken by surprise.. my friend was like dude, i'm not looking for any trouble .. and i was like ... back off, bro.. my boy is just working out.. we went to church yesterday now get off his back or you'll need to start praying real hard... get the point? and this dude was like,"no, you need to start praying... etc... theres a time and a place for everything.....

I lost my first Christian roomate in college when some girl I knew
crawled under the screened window and into my bed to get some.

I would have shared here after I was done. I was feeling happy
and offered him a ride. Oh well, that was the end of him.

it happened to me a few times wheer ppl came to me trying to preach... what i hated was that i told them many times i was not xtian.. but they wouldnt listen and keep going and going and going... for god's sakes im not even xtian!!!

This is so funny!!!! I too am a born again Christian, and I NEVER start spewing off about Jesus in a GYM of all places!!! I'm there to work out and get out. If an opportunity arises where I CAN talk to someone then I do, otherwise, there's no point.

This is similar to what happened to me a few months ago, I was at the gym, doing tricep pulldowns. Thing is, I was so exausted from the day's work, that YES I was doing them improperly. I had no energy and I was just going through the motions.

So this dude comes up to me and starts spowting off about how I am not using proper form, and immediately goes to show me the proper way to do them. So I go "Thanks buddy, I will do it the way you teach me" but what I was thinking was "Excuse me pal, my arms measure about 17" and yours measure about 14" so obviously I am doing something better than you. But I will let it go this time because I realize you probably just picked up your copy of Body-for-Life and are all revved up on all the proper "forms" of exercise, so just get the hell outta here"

preaching religion in the gym is like taking a shit in public then smearing it everywhere, just not acceptable,if you want to preach in your own home or smear shit all over your home then go ahead

Ahh, no wonder why they kicked my out of the Bank last week and said something about calling the cops.

Do like a did to a guy

He was an ex convict bla bla bla, he tried to preach me the good faith saying God save his life.
Well I replied saying . Well I stop believing in CHristianity when I started killing for Allah, some pagans fuckers like you, some years ago, guess what he left!!!!!!!

i worked construction for a few summers getting through school and the dude i was partnered with was born agian. oh was that a long summer. he went on and on 8 hours per day 5 days a week. i would try to change the subject and it would always come back to how he was saved.

boy did he have a temper. i made one "little" joke and he flew off the handle. i thought he was going to grab a pipe wrench and try to kill me.

but he refused to speak to me every summer after. so i was happy.

Let me play Devils Advocate (so to speak) and pose this question.

Where would be the proper place to reach people. Invite them over for dinner, then ambush them when they walk in the door? I don't think that would be acceptable either.

Just curious, I don't know how I would. I guess I would wait for them to ask why I'm so happy or why I don't cuss etc.

In this country he is free to talk about Christ to anyone who will listen. You have the perogative to tell him to shut up or leave.

Just like that guy with the 14" guns trying to advise the guy with 17" guns. Someone needs to tell him to shut up. Or people blasting thier music from their cars.

Same thing happened to me last week. Some guy approached me politley, he must have been in his early 20's. Started asking me about my religion and if I wanted to join his Youth Group. This is the second time I've had to deal with this crap!

I too am a born again Christian...actually right about now i think I'm going to hell with all the shit I've been doing (besides gear). I had friends like that though, that ALWAYS told people right away. Wouldn't even bother to get to know them. You have to know someone before you begin discussing anything personal like that. Honestly it's no one's business. If someone like that asks you right off the bat tell them. Or you can always make your head do a 360, turn green, and puke blood all over them...that usually works.

my take

Here is my take on all this: When someone who beleives that Jesus is the son of God and that He died on the cross and He rose from the dead and most importantly that He is coming back------Whether they recently accepted Christ or not---

Please consider this---The fact that they are telling you about Jesus is an attempt to help save your eternal soul. They are concerned about your eternal well-being. I'd say that is a pretty good favor.

I am a Christian and try to share Jesus with others often. When I do this --- if the individual that I am speaking with resists, then I will leave them alone.

I do see a difference in "preaching" and an attempt to share eternal life.

organized religion

Organized religion is for the weak minded. Anyone who would live their lives based on book written thousands of years ago by people who didn't even have shoes on their feet and were afraid of their own shadows is cutting themselves short on life. You have one life to live, live it up! Don't live your life in fear that you won't go to heaven, it does not exist! When you die you will go into the ground and become worm food. Most of these so called preachers are the biggest hypocrites anyway, always being caught doing what they tell you not to do! Organized religion is designed to keep the masses in line and afraid of the unknown. Most people who preach on their own are fresh out of rehab and were given "god" or "Jesus" as something to do instead of drugs. When some asshole tries to preach this bullshit to me I tell them to go fuck themselves! How dare they try to limit the only life that I was given! The timid sheep always leave with a different outlook when I'm done reaming them a new asshole for trying to enslave me, I do not turn the other cheek, I will smash theirs if they are willing to stand up!

Not to offend anyone that is a dedicated follower of the message, but IMHO religion is for people who cant believe in themselves. Thats just how I feel.

well, god told christians to minister to the people. wether they accept it is up to the person. what i'm saying is that there's a time and place and gym is not. wether you accept what the person is saying is totally up to you, but the man was just doing his duty as a christian. he didn't go about it correct, but he was probably a "newbie" to the christian thing.
