Back in the early '80s there was a phone number you could call to find out if your line was tapped. You could listen as the other end ran some kind of sound frequency scan. A DOUBLE CLICK meant you were tapped.
Phone surveilance got much more sophistacated over the years and this line check dropped out fo service.
