In the beginning of GnR's Don't Damn Me, Axl does this "yiiyiiyiiyiiyii" thing that sounds like a goat on crack. :lmao:

Post up some other funny shiite you've heard in music. :)

Haven't heard much of their stuff, I should check that out.

King Diamond's hard to top. Maybe Danni from CoF.

And System of A Down are generic radio-friendly alternative rock. There is nothing special about them.

Bob Dylan's voice

I loves me some System of a Down. They are anything from generic alternative rock. No one is even in the same ballpark as them in terms of unique sound. Like them or not.

She's canadian right? Probably Barenaked Ladies or Rush.

Rush is cool, a great band, even thought the singer sounds like some wizzard who lives with forest animals.

im canadian and i think Rush is one of the worst bands ever

Yeah, their songs are so-so, but as far as being able to play well, they can.

In a certain version of Creep (I have the album, but not sure which one...), in the line, "you're so very special", Thom Yorke says "very" in a hilarious way. drops his voice down real low like he is fake burping. first time I heard it I was on acid down at the Jersey shore and laughed about it for about 6 hours.

They have a brilliant drummer and basist. Not fan of their music either.

The guitarist is quite good too. Too bad the songs are pompous crapola, and the singer sounds like fingernails on a blackboard.

I'll agree with ya on that.

This thread got way off topic.

Add Rob Zombie's Pussy Liquor to this list, just for the quote in the song from the movie :lmao:

Awesome song too.

They are alternative rock. Unless there's some neo-alternative catch-phrase that I'm unaware of. They're not "hard rock", most certainly not "metal". They're radio-friendly. Alternative.

Generic? What's unique about them? What have they done that another band has not?

Radio does not play unique. They play what the masses want to hear. The masses listen to distinctly catagorizable music. Radio stations exist as businesses with one goal: to make money.

Samoth i would have to say they are metal. there pretty heavy. everyone has there own opinion on music. im a strict heavy metal listener. killswitch, atreyu, demon hunter, poison the well, etc. and i classify system of a down as one also. i just dont think there alternative at all. the only songs from them that i would say arent to heavy is chop suey, aerials, and spiders.

You can put any genre label on them that you want. Alternative, Metal, Neo-metal. Whatever. Fact remains no other band on the planet sounds like them. I'd go as far as to say they are one of the most distinctly unique bands on the planet. If you think they sound like everyone else, you might not be listening but to one of their more radio friendly songs. You can hate them or love them, but one thing you cannot argue is that NO one sounds like them. Be that a good or a bad thing in your eyes.

Being unique doesn't mean you do something another band hasn't. They don't bite the heads off of pigs as opposed to pidgeons, or light their drums on fire in contrast to their guitars. They have a sound and style that is like no other band and that draws on no direct influences that you could find. They are unique. They have created their own sound and carved their own niche. Yeah they play guitars and sing like every other band, but they do it very uniquely. They are so far from generic it's not even funny.

As for what the radio plays, yeah for the most part the radio plays whatever the masses want to hear, which is typically cookie cutter mass produced music. Every now and again good music gets through the cracks though. Not everything on the radio is bad just because it is on the radio. Some bands are on the radio for the right reasons and because they deserve to be, and in turn people actually do enjoy their music, albeit a rarity these days.

I don't care if someone likes them or not. They are a very hate or love kind of band, and i can see that. But they are anything but generic and standard.

I've been metal for almost half of my life. Either a band is metal, or they are not. There's no in-between. If a band's radio-friendly (...in the U.S.), they are not metal.

None of the bands listed even have long hair.

Hmm... some examples of U.S. metal bands include the kings of metal Manowar, as well as Morbid Angel, Deceased, Death, Napalm Death, Carcass, Slayer, Obituary, Nile, etc. There's not much American metal out there compared to what's been churning out of Sweden and surrounding countries. Blind Guardian, Manowar, and Slayer are good examples of clean-vocal'd metal.

Your radio music-for-the-masses does not come close to the word "metal". And there are plenty of metal bands that don't always have heavy songs... newer My Dying Bride and Anathema spring to mind. 3rd and the Mortal as well. Metal is a form of music; however, true metal transcends simple power cords, distorted guitars and predictable drum beats.

... lots of words...

I haven't heard their entire discography. I have heard one full album, and all of their radio hits. From everything I've heard, I don't think they are unique in any way, save for the small things that one could argue makes any and every musical group unique.

We might be thinking 'unique' in different ways. When Darkthrone released Ablaze in the Northern Sky, it was unique. I rarely use the word unique when describing a band, so I think we may be coming from different points of view.

lol @ lots of words.

I will agree that Toxicity is more radio friendly than their debut, but it still so unique in style to me I can't see how somebody could see otherwise. That's me being hardheaded though. I don't listen to metal though, so I can't relate to your reference.

I just listen to so much music that when a band actually has its own style and sound, I really pick up on it. Even if it is small or even unnoticeable perhaps in the eyes of the masses. Not to say you don't either, but if you listen to a lot of what's out there, and then listen to a band like SOAD, it definitely gets my attention at least.

Have you listened to "Sugar" before? It was on the radio, but that is the best example of their style I can think of. It is so all over the place and just so weird beyond anything, but it works. At least I think so.

Yeah, when I think of unique, I think of genre-defining. The reference I gave was just that; an album that [helped] started an entire scene of music worldwide.

I see where you're coming from in what you say, though. I just use the word differently.
