From Fatass to Badass - A Journal of Change

Nice! That's some motivation right there!

Yeah. When we were working out together he could always get about 10 or 15 pounds more than me on both lifts. However, I was pretty new to lifting back then and didn't have anywhere near the knowledge base or the drive that I do now. I was just having fun back then. This time around, I'm not just lifting to lift. I have very specific goals that I want to reach and a plan of attack to reach them. He has no idea what he's in for. I'm going to try and let him go first on the first lift, let him go through it, compliment him and everything. . . then slap another 45 on each side and go to town.

Motivation for sure.

:garza: I got my gym membership!! :garza:

It's freakin' huge too. Three or four million cardio machines of every conceivable shape, size, and function, several hundred thousand lifting machines, and, thank god, lots of free weights. Even a couple of squat racks. I didn't see any certain area that's dedicated to deadlifting, which is cool because that just means I can use any place I want, right? That's how I'm interpreting it.

I'm going to head over late tonight and play around for about an hour or so, just figuring out what weights I can use on the various lifts. Hopefully I don't staple myself on the bench.

I'm really hoping that last night was not truly indicative of my current strength. I'm hoping that certain exercises, namely the squat, just felt really odd and that over the next couple of weeks I'll be able to add a good 40 or 50 pounds more. But, as it stands now, it's truly weak.

For the bench, my 5 rep max is 205.
For the squat, my 5 rep max is 225.

My freaking squat should not be nearly the same as my bench! That's definitely gonna change.

Rows, 165. Deadlift, 275.

Those deadlifts felt awesome too. I've never really done them much, and when I did I think I must've gone way too light to really feel much. Last night, I toss on 135 and knock out like 10 reps, no problem. So I put another 45 on each side, and again, about 8 reps, no real trouble. I put another 45 on each side, and got the bar about 1/2 an inch off the ground. I stood, kinda grinning, thinking "well, I guess we know where my threshold for the deadlift is. . . . . naw, F- that! C'mon, fatboy, DO IT!" I grabbed the bar again, and lifted, and locked out, and nailed my one rep max. That felt so good. I could feel it all through my back, my traps, a little in my legs. What surprised me was my forearms. They felt like they were about to bust outta my skin!

Let the good times roll!

Dude - those lifts are VERY good for where you are. I couldn't put up 185 for 5 on bench when I first got back into it.

You're gonna be amazed at how strong you are in about 3 months.

I'm thinking I may not have gotten down low enough in my squat, because my left knee was beginning to stiffen up after my second set. I've had a few problems with it in the past, so I'm gonna have to watch it. I thought I was getting down pretty low, past parallel, but maybe with the weight across my back for the first time in a few years I wasn't quite getting there. That's all right, I'll be back on it tomorrow.

The logical part of my brain agrees, of course. The other part is remembering how strong I used to be and wondering how in the hell I turned into such a freaking weakling again.

But, like you said, 2 or 3 months and I should be throwing down some decent numbers. I just need to get through the baby steps again.

Alright, I'm gonna try a Saturday, Monday, Wednesday split for the 5x5. I'm not a huge fan of the morning workouts, but my wife wants to go in the morning so I'm going to give it a shot so that we can go up there together. I'll give it a wekk or two and just see how I feel lifting in the morning, plus how I feel at work afterwards. If it works, great, if not then I'll have to change it to evenings after work. We'll see.

Regardless,
