Fraternities: To join or not to join?

Frats were banned from my school in the 50's - every year or so after that they voted if they should be allowed back and they never have since.
Of the schools that I raced against that had frats, there were definitely athletes in frats - espectially hockey and football players.
every school is different as to what frats really mean. some treat them asboys clubs that will help you through many things throughout life as you try new things and need a connection. others are just a guarenteed set of people that will hang out with you. and nearly all of them have some sort of drinking system to pass the time.
personally, I see no reason to be in one - but I wasn't in one and wouldn't want to be in one.
I'm sure people that were dying to get into one, and got in, would then tell you that it is the greatest thing ever.
I think they largely were started oringinally to help give people a sense of self (in the plural sense) to allow the daunting social construct of a large school to be more easily tackled. but as of late, from what I have seen, they have "evolved" to more of a drinking house

Whatcha got to lose? You might like it and stay. Their friendships may help your career on down the road. I strongly recommend drinking in college anyway. All I did was work and study mostly. Not many really good memories though I never minded studying.Fonz said:

man, i dont picture you being the kind of person to be someone else's bitch and get hazed for a semester. plus, if you are going to school in texas...the southern fraternities dont fuck around. i hear they haze hard as hell. and if you do decide to rush, dont listen to all the bullshit about there being no hazing, cause it is all a load of shit. i knew it was a load of shit when i accepted my bid, but i had no fucking clue it was going to be as bad as it ended up being.

Aside from housing (if you consider living in a frat house a good thing) there are no benefits to joining a frat.
It's not like the old days when you could get a good job based off your frat membership.
Socially it would drain more time than it's worth, especially as a 24 year old male who aspires beyond the beer bong.

Most of my friends were in a frat, though I never was. I think it depends on your personality. I need to have my space and not have some fatass come into my room at 2am and tell me that I have to come party now because they found 48 unopened beers.
Still, my friends enjoyed being in a frat. so, i guess it comes down to how much you like being in social situations with a group of people often.

I will sum it all up for you right here and now.
Fraternities = paying money to have friends.
So if you do not have any friends or have trouble making friends, then it may be a good idea. My feeling is you do not have this problem so save your money. You could also become friends with a member and just attend all the parties, drink all their beer and fuck all their women while being his guest.
Also my experience with these people are they are the ones who were complete losers in High School so they decided to join a boys club to fit in with the so called "in" crowd. They then think they are badasses and like to start shit while their are about 20 of them.

If you haven't found the idea of joining one to be appealing enough to go ahead and do so, then you probably won't find it to be a rewarding experience. I've seen the typical "fratboys" around school, walking around with their colors and letters proudly worn on their shirts.... I think I'll pass - thank you.

just gotta check out a bunch of em, and hopefully you will find a group of guys you just fit in wth, generally each frat has dfferant people, we really don't have athletes, we got a lot of guys that are in bands and just guys that like to hang out and shit, I really enjoy it, I went to all the fraternitis on my campus to see what it was about, and only like 3 out of 20 I had any interest in, so just shop around, you don't fid anything, then oh well

You're 24, the majority of them are probably under 21. Who do you think they're going to hit-up to buy the alcohol all the time?
Even if you don't buy the alcohol, and you're hanging out at the frat house while they're drinking... say the cops show up for some reason (gee, imagine that with a frat house), now you're once again contributing to the delinquency of minors, just by being around there.
...not worth the potential legal hassle in my opinion.

Beyond the sheer stupidity of the "paying for friends" line it is ridiculous to even lump them all together into the same group. If you attend a few fraternities you will realize that the personalities are vastly different. Based on that the best advice I can give you Fonz has already been given. Shop around; don't go into it saying gee I wanna join a frat. If in fact you find one that you really click with great, you will not regret it. If you check them out and don’t click with any then no big loss, the ones on your campus are not for you.
what do you think pays for those parties and beers?? Thats right, the dues. The money has to come from somewhere. Is someone who invests in a night club buying friends?

Whatever though, my opinion is very biased. It was their mob mentality that got my ass jumped by about 15 one night. They are all badasses in a group but most are little pussies one it comes to being alone.

I didn't get hazed at all, and at least my frat is not like the ones posted about by some of thes people, they sure as hell exist, their is a few I know of that are just fucking shit heads, or cocksucker preppy rich boys, I looked atr all of them so I could find the ones that aren't like that

Dues $700 a month, you seriously have no fuckin clue what you are talking about. Mine are about $65 a month. As to the guy curious about joining at 24. If you find a group of guys who you get along with and you like there orginization, go for it. as for all the people bashing fraternities I'm sure you have never rushed, and you are only going with what people have told you. Don't bash something you honestly know a damm thing about; do some research, check them out, and then come make a post. As for parties and fraternerities. I have lived in Sacramento for about 3 months now, and have not been to one descent non greek party. All of the parties half worth going to were put on by greeks, so don't bash them because I'm sure you all go to them.

Frats aren't as popular at tamu as the other schools. Many of the students have an anti-frat mentality. Personally, I didn't get along with the stereotypical frat guy in highschool, and I wouldn't choose to be around them now. The only frat I'd consider joining is a business frat, or something similar.

are there 'intellectual' frats? perhaps that is an oxymoron, but it is possible. Some colleges have frats for every mindset. Sortof like gangs i guess.
