nice gym, what are all those boxes and plastic sheets in the background? are you getting rid of them? it would look a lot better if you did....

Looks pretty doggone nice to me!!!!

B True

Looks solid :)

Now you don't have the snow-cold excuse not to go to the gym

It looks good. I wish I had a squat rack. Oh well, I'll just pray I don't succumb to the weights.

I myself want a squat rack and GHR in the future. That would give me all I need. Actually, that would probably give anyone all they need.

Squat Rack
GHR
Bands & Chains
Ivanko & CoC Grippers

yeah it's great...

the plastic and shit in the back is just cause my dad is big into building crap out of scraps.... don't know why, it's a hobby of his the man never throws anything away.

i'm hoping to get a better bar though, the one i got bends like a mfer.

i've never used bands/chains before. you guys know where i can pick up some cheap chains? i'd hate to go and buy that stuff from a fitness store... a length of chain is over two hundred dollars!? it's just chains!

yeah, no more cold weather excuses! and if you are in toronto right now, you'll know that it's some damned cold here!

i just had half my workout outside with the snow :p

i think chains/bands are a good idea but dont rush into adding the into your training..some may disagree but it hink you should first try to build with just the weight itself and tehn later on add some chains/bands..either way though heres a link with some cheap equipment..bars/chains.etc

thanks bro.

i'm basically just doing:

deadlifts (grip variations, rack pulls)
olympic lifts & variations
squats (db split squat, oly backsquat)
bench (close grip, reg grip)

and then tagging to the end of workouts:
heavy dips/chinups (see dip belt? :p)
barbell rows, db rows
then some curls here and there because i'm still a teenager :)

a lot of people have mentioned CoC grippers, and specific grip training. i feel for me it is enough if i just do static holds at the end of deadlift workouts, chins, and whenever i can, pinch grip a couple of plates. is this enough to substitute for grippers?

i'll read t-mag and things like this, and their workouts are so complicated.

looks good..nothing wrong with curls lol i do bicep work but not 10-20 sets like some people do..

some naturally have a strong grip..i can tell you doing back work plus your deads without straps will improve your grip..i agree with you on the static holds..i do them when im hitting traps at the end of the set ill just sit there and hold it for as long as i can..

cool.

i really would like to stay equipment-less, but i think i'll have to get straps soon, a few times my grip has failed before my workout ends.

another question, if you dont mind.

how important is it, in your opinion, to do specific ab work? ie; weighted crunches.

at this point, i do none, the only ab work i get is indirectly whilst doing other lifts. i have a feeling having no obliques and such is holding me back from lifting anymore

i go through periods where im using the strps a lot then i catch myself and dont even bring them to the gym so that i can work my grip..use them but use them sparingly..

abs are important..you can do side bends while holding a plate in your hand..try to rig something where you can anchor your feet and do some sit ups..also
WSB sells an ab wheel for less than 20 bucks..i train my abs at least 2 times per week and heavy..some days ill do reps of 15-20 others ill do reps of 5-10..leg raises are great for the hip flexors

very well i'll throw in some abdominal bridges, weighted crunches, weighted leg raises, side bends, and see how my DL/squat responds

Static holds won't give you the crushing grip strength that grip training will give you. It depends on your goals though. I like having crushing strength in my hand. Such a tiny little thing that can latch onto anything like a fucking vice.

Took B's advice, as it's good for martial arts. Lots of grip and ab work.

By the by, I'd suggest reaching a 400 lb. squat and 250 lb. bench (roughly) before you add in bands and chains to your lifts. Use bands for AR.

not so, bands can be used for assistance work ush as pushdown or reverse band deadlifts to help lockout. Some use them on pull-ups for assistance, hook the fuck on the top of the cag and then your belt ect....

my goals are 250 bench, and 350 full squat, 400 deadlift. why is it important to have such a base of strength before adding in chains and bands? does it completely change the lifts?

for recovery, i stretch post workout (pre workout stretches are very light, and in certain areas ie; hip flexors for squats), massages, lots of stingy ointment, food, cold pack post workout, heat pack during recovery (say, day after), and hot baths with epsom salts.

vash, i ordered from fitness source. i had to go down in vaughn to see the rack, as there is no where that i know of in markham that sells a proper rack. they have 10,000 sq ft of treadmills, and some 5k thing called a "body plate" that makes me feel like i'm standing on top of a subwoofer.

tom - i have no crushing strrength. are there any cheaper household alternatives to grippers? i've heard of tearing and crushing newspapers even...

lord suston - what you see there is my own deadlifting platform. i'm going to go get a few sheets of plywood to put underneath, but it's enough. i believe in the middle track i used an inch thick board, not sure what it is exactly. any ideas where i could get some sticky coating so there is no slippage?

Ah, well then maybe my example was a bit extreme, and not to be taken into account in all situations, Suston. Point I was making was that such advanced techniques probably needn't be used until a better strength foundation is acquired, simply because it's not needed. I thought I remember an article on Elitefts or something talking about how implementing chains for an intermediate lifter could potentially lead to overtraining. Maybe I'm wrong.

No household alternatives I can really think of. Tearing cards or newspapers would probably just give you solid hand strength in general, but I can't see that doing much for crushing. I mean, crushing is simply squeezing something within your hand, clamping down and turning it into rubble. :FRlol: Seriously though, the best alternative for now could be squeezing a tennis ball as tight as you can.

And also, working against something that won't budge (such as squeezing a baseball as hard as you can, constantly trying to push against it, breaking that mental barrier and proceeding to squeeze as if you could actually demolish it) may help.

In the end, best bet would be to invest in a $20-$25 Ivanko Super Gripper.

Looks like you have just about all you need. If it was me, Id add an incline bench (or adjustable) more plates and some dumbbells. You have all the main equipment though. Plenty to build on. KILL THAT SHIT!!

I'd get a stereo in there too. That's a damn nice stup for the loot. Abuddy of man got one of those chintzy all-in-one things that is all cables and a weight stack. No good at all and it costed more.

the stereo is actually right below to the left of where i was standing when i took the picture.

no more britney and usher for me! w00t
