It's only around because people bet on it. These horses are being bred to have smaller and smaller joints and ligaments and this is what's starting to happen. Horse's were supposed to carry men into battle..........not midgets across a finish line so other miscreants can bet currency on which midget on which horse crosses the line first. It's a noble animal.........this stuff disgusts me.

According to several estimates, there are 1.5 career-ending breakdowns for every 1,000 racing starts in the United States.
That's an average of two per day

here's a post from a gambling forum I frequent
heartbreaking

"Yes, it is part of racing. These horses are juveniles, not even close to physically mature. I personally am against the racing of any horse under the age of 5. But, that is not the way it is. It is an exploitive sport, especially to the young horses. This was not caused by too many horses, or an accident. This young female horse was still developing, and in nature should would only be running that hard if she was in danger. I used to work at a pacer/trotter stable, and they just don't have the stress the thoroughbreds do. I can't remember a horse actually breaking down on the track, but in thoroughbreds, I would see it once a week, when I watched multiple tracks. You look into these beautiful animals eyes right before they get put to sleep and it is if they are saying, why did you do this to me? Sad just does not work for me, I would say tragic."

If they allowed the cameras up close to see those bones sticking out and in the back of the horse ambulence when they put them down they would outlaw the sport.

it's bullfighting for americans

I despise horse racing! My mother and I have three lovable beasts and every time I think of the abuse, ABUSE, not training that those poor animals are put through, just to win a few million dollars for some asshole, makes me want to shoot said asshole. Some of the shit that happens before, during and after those races would be considered by most to be cruelty to animals. By the time the horse is 4/5 they are considered too old to race. The poor horse is put to pasture with 20+ years of its life left, to go crazy. IF they are champions they are kept up for breeding. GRRRRRRR!!!

A) For once spartacus, I am completely in agreement and I see you've got some kind of soul going on.

B) on a ligther note, cause I don't want to think about that poor horse...........what in the name of god happened to your K??? It's like when Trump collapsed. ????

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The filly Eight Belles finished second behind favorite Big Brown in the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, then collapsed with two broken front ankles and was euthanized after crossing the wire.
The field of 20 horses was galloping out around the first turn at Churchill Downs when Eight Belles suddenly went down on both front legs and jockey Gabriel Saez slid off.
"When we passed the wire I stood up," said Saez, a first-time Derby rider. "She started galloping funny. I tried to pull her up. That's when she went down."
An equine ambulance reached her near the second turn and tended to the filly.
"There was no possible way to save her," on-call veterinarian Dr. Larry Bramlage said. "She broke both front ankles. That's a bad injury."
Trainer Larry Jones and owner Rick Porter decided to run Eight Belles against the boys in America's greatest race despite her never having done so before. She brought in solid credentials with a four-race winning streak and then ran gallantly.
The dark gray filly also was entered in Friday's Kentucky Oaks for fillies. Jones, however, won that race with Proud Spell and set himself up to pull off the double.
Eight Belles was the first filly since 1999 to run in the Derby; the last to win was Winning Colors in 1988. She didn't press 2-1 favorite Big Brown down the stretch, and he drew away to a 4 3/4-length victory.

you didn't know that?
I didn't watch the race but from what I understand she ran her heart out
one girl in 20 males
someone would have to elaborate about the animal psychology of that

btw poor choice for thread title
you're getting no action in your thread

I looked at the names pre-race and thought someone was being cute making a pun of 1/8 of an ounce known on the street as an "eightball"
an 8ball is 3.5 grams
but consider yourself not too screwed to get 2

Rare that a filly that young has the physical maturity to stay along side colts of the same age, let alone beat most of them. The fact that she took second speaks VOLUMES about her 'heart'. It's beyond tragic what happened to her.

Have they shot the trainers yet? It only makes sense since they put down the one variable on that team that actually did her 'job'. I just assumed that everyone else associated would have to suffer the same fate. I guess I'm dreaming of a perfect world.

You mean the world of accountability? It must exist somewhere......not here........but "somewhere".
