Last attempt to pass a federal law that would have made English the official language in US has failed.....however , there are some cities in the US that have passed ordinances that have made English the official language..

Should US have English as the official language ? Why?

Yes it should be English.

If i were to move to Spain, i would have to learn Spanish, or never fit in.

Over here we are too fuckin politically correct.

I understand immigration, fine, but immigrants should have to at least ATTEMPT to learn English.

We are the United States of America. We should all be united under one native tounge. I think its perfectly fine to allow people to talk in different language. But it should be ATLEAST written into the USA, that our native language is English

I think to become an american you must speak English.I also thick they should pass a law that if you go to a store, fast food place what ever and the person serving you can not speak English you have the legal right to kill them on the spot.just saying.

fuck yes. why the hell wouldn't it be!?! Franklin is probably rolling over in his grave right now.

Whiskey

Trying to please everybody and not be offensive will be the downfall of America.

bookmark this post for when that happens so you can say "Man that aap was right"

It is the language of this country. We shouldn't have to have a law saying so. More taxes dollars spent on the most absurd notions. Think about how many billions of dollars we'd save if every GD thing wasn't translated into 10 different languages. Learn the language or leave!!

My question is, why isnt everyone in this country smart enough to learn Hungarian?
Hungarian language as Finish language have finno-ugric origins....I used to date a few Hungarians girls a while ago and let me tell you that HUngarian language is a very difficult one to learn....You can be very smart but unless you have great foreign language skills....learning Hungarian would be deemed as mission impossible...

There's a guy I work with who has been in Canada for 30 yrs. A citizen for 25. Yet he cannot read labels, he can barely understand when you talk to him, & he can barely make himself understood. And he's getting worse as he gets older. They won't fire him, even though he's a health hazard to himself & others, because he's a nice guy. Fire his ass I say!

I fuckin kid you not...there are NURSES where I work who dont speak english very well.

English is the official language of the U.S.

Can't really force anyone to learn the language that comes here. For citizenship, yes the test should be in only english. I don't believe in having to cater to someone who doesn't speak english though.
I do gladly speak my limited spanish with anyone though, it only helps me learn more.
The only people that should be forced to learn another language are American students. It should be mandatory.

got news for you ..there is no official language in US...there have been several tries that have failed....If English was the official language you couldnt be able to take the DMV test in Spanish, Chinese, Laotian, Vietnamese....and so on....just one example...

Native Americans probably think americans should speak their language or get the hell out of their county.

... oh, wait... we conquered them and took over their land. Well, that gives us the right to dictate the language here. Just like the Chinese will have us speaking their language when they take over the country in fifty years :D

(I actually think every country should have an 'educated' langage, where the the people who are high enough up to be dealing with other peoples and nations all know a common toungue, kinda like latin used to be. Kind of an outdated view, though, by maybe a few centuries, lol.)

On a federal level no. Maybe you would be more comfortable predominant? Some states have official languages. Official language simply means that that language is recognized in the constitution. One could argue that since the Constitution is in english, it is the official language.
You are talking about laws and legislation mandating an english only policy.
So I disagree with you that you couldn't be able to take a dmv test in another language if the official language is english. Lots of countries have an official language that isn't even the language spoken by the majority.
Silly waste of time in my opinion. Wouldn't change a thing.

the test for citizenship is strictly english. The person has to know how to write and read english and you can not have a translator there. One lady's (that used to work with me) husband told the lady at the Immigration right at the start that he doesnt know good english and she didnt even proceed - she told him to leave right away

In Hawaii for example Hawaiian is besides English the official language..there are half of the countries in the world that have official languages, whereas some countries have two or more official languages...My question is: What difference would it make if English would be made as the US official language?

"The United States federal government may not have officially established English as its formal official language, but does use English for legislation, regulations, executive orders, treaties, federal court rulings, and all other official pronouncements. In some states, English, Hawaiian and Spanish are official. In 2000, the census bureau printed the standard census questionnaires in six languages: English, Spanish, Korean, Chinese, Vietnamese, and Tagalog. The English-Only movement seeks to establish English as the only official language of the nation.

English was inherited from British colonization and it is spoken by the vast majority of the population. It serves as the de facto official language, for instance as that in which government business is carried out. According to the 1990 census, 97 percent of U.S. residents speak English 'well' or 'very well.' Only 0.8 percent speak no English at all, as compared with 3.6 percent in 1890. American English has some differences from British English, but these differences are fairly minor. For detailed differences in British English and American English see American and British English differences."reference article from the English Wikipedia...

A lingua franca so to speak? An international language of commerce and diplomacy?

There already is one. It's English.

By making the English as the US official language...would mean that in courts no translation service would be offered as well as no bilingual signs ....there would be only English ballots etc...

"They note that English-only laws help governments save money by allowing publication of official documents in a single language, saving on translation and printing costs, and that English-only laws promote the learning of English by non-English speakers. One example offered is that of Canada, with two official languages, English and French. The Canadian government itself has addressed this issue, noting that in 1996-7, only 260 million Canadian dollars were spent on bilingual services."

Yep, you can tell I'm well traveled, eh? :D

So if the important people all speak the same language, us peasants should just accept the culteral diversity of the world and not worry too much about it...

What's wrong with that? If you break a law in a country where you can't speak or read their language, that's one's own ignorance. Similarly, why should illiterate people be voting?

common, you can do better than a one syllable answer...care to argument your answer?

Argument is a verb now?

To succeed, immigrants need to assimilate into the mainstream culture of the country. Without English, they will locked in the ghetto for life. And it's an imposition to expect the majority to learn a minority language to accommodate their needs.

Why do have to write into the constitution that english is our official language to be able to only offer things in english? Again you are talking about an english only law. Courts not allowing a new immigrant a translator is just ridiculous. How is it justice if you cannot defend yourself?

Found this for you:

An official language is something that is given a unique status in the countries, states, and other territories. It is typically the language used in a nation's legislative bodies, though the law in many nations requires that government documents be produced in other languages as well.

The Canucks have 2 official languages which is why they incurred the cost of bilingual services. They have passed laws though, to make everything available in both languages.

A university in cali recognized ebonics as a language, so I guess grammar and spelling are arbitrary now.

America should officially adapt the "American" language, which is highly differentiated from the "English" language of our European counterparts.

Cheers, dogg!

What was the reason or reasons it was turned down???
Sounds like we are catering to the illegal immigrants.
Maybe the paper companys are behind this. Its always nice to open an
instuction manual the size of a novel and the english section is 4 pages long.

I might as well say i work in bosnia, 90% of the employees are bosnian.
I will say there are nice people and all but jesus after 10yrs in the states you
should be able to speak some english. I respect other peoples cultures and all but when they choose and the key word here is "choose" to come to this country LEARN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE. :redhot:

ok im done :)

Hmmm I got no probs with either. :)

But then again, English is NOT my mother tongue so I suppose that would stand to reason.

Honestly when I went to Italy I had to speak Italian. Went to Germany, had to speak German...Go any where you want, they expect you to speak their language and be fluent.
How come no one has to be here in the us? No offense but I hear more other languages here..Call a 1-800 help for tech support or some thing and you can barely understand what they are saying.
IMHO- people who enter the us and expect a green card should have to attend an english course or 2....

Except in Quebec where there are laws regulating how much English is allowed, & regulating English words as proper names for businesses, etc. Canda is bilingual, whereas Quebecois extremists want Quebec to be unilingual.

and the French they speak in Quebec is not the French spoken in France....they kinda shorten up the words plus the accent is different..

When I lived in Miami, at least half of the time the clerks in stores would not speak English to me. The cubans would say, "well, are you at least trying to learn Spanish?" Ummmmmmmmm....EXCUSE ME! You moved here! You should be making the effort to speak English!

Yeah, I learned to speak Spanish, but I didn't appreciate the sense of entitlement that they had.
