engine overhauls

My car's about 10k miles away from 200k, it's still in great shape and still runs awesome. It has given me no major problems aside from normal things like the alt goign out and other crap like that. Anyways, I want to the engine overhauled before I do have any problems.

What is the range of prices I should expect to hear for that? What time frame is acceptable for that kind of work to be done? I'm hoping that both fall in the $1k, 1 week category.

if you look around, you can always find really good "small town" machine shops.. they most always do superb jobs, and they have very reasonable prices. just ask around, and try to make some gearhead buddies :)

if you can find one of those, i'd say around $500-$800 including labor and about a week timeframe.

Damn.......What kind of vehicle? You certainly got your moneys worth.

Although its been a great vehicle i would sell it while its still running good and get something else before you sink that kind of money into a vehicle that has 200k miles on it.

what type of vehicle?

oh yeah, you might just go buy a crate engine, or a rebuilt for under a grand and just slap that in.. get some buddies and do it in a weekend :)

Take care of it and wait for it to break. You can get an idea of the condition of the rings and bearings by having an oil analysis done.

A proper "overhaul" would be a complete disassembly of the engine with new rings and crankshaft bearings, gaskets, re-seat the valves, valve guides, and more. I doubt it would fit into either your time or cost preferences.

A low-mileage used engine from the salvage yard would be a cheaper alternative, or swap in a remanufactured smallblock.

Maybe you could get it done a lot cheaper in Mexico? Heck, you could probably find someone who could do a V8 conversion for less than what it would cost to have your original engine freshened up.

The cost for most of these options will approach the total value of your car.

'93 camaro (really rare to get that kind of milage out of an American car), still looks great since they basically look the same from '93-'02 and runs awesome. I don't really have money for another car, unless I buy a beater, and won't for a while, I'd rather spend some money on overhauling and feel safe over the next upcoming months (tough times ahead for me), and once I'm out of this ditch I'll think about selling it.

then i would suggest buying an engine an dropping it in there.. im not 100% but i think you can get more for your money that way

If money is an issue, find a small town junkyard and get a used one. At one of the places around here, you won't pay over 400 bucks for a used engine, especially off of an american made car.
