Just the setting is 5K. And of course she wants platinum. I told her my limit was 5K, but she picked the ring and said she'd help out because that's what she wants. It's funny, before she saw that ring she said she'd be happy with whatever I got her. I think I screwed myself, now there's no going backwards!!

You deffinitly have to look at the quality. You can get a 1c Princess cut (that is what is most popular right now) for anywhere between 6K-15K. If you are looking for the long term/durability I would go with Platinum. It is the heaviest, and the most durable... but at the same time, you can get white gold for half the price and the same look. I just went ring shopping with my friend who proposed 2 weeks ago to his fiance. She got a white gold diamond solitare that was about 1K and absolutley loved it. Most women (or at least the good ones that you should be marrying) wouldn't care if they got a thousand dollar ring, or a ten thousand dollar ring. This goes back to the whole penis size thing. Men freak out about it because they want to always be the biggest and the best, but most women are just happy that they get YOU, not the extra inch or extra .5C. As long as you do something romantic and special (I would ask a bunch of your famale friends for suggestions) she will be happy no matter what. Congrats, and good luck to you.

I remember learning in finishing school about the 3 C's for diamonds- color, clarity, and carats...I think that's right. Well, I personally would not invest too much in an engagement ring, though, because you can use your money on a wedding ring or better yet for a downpayment on a home. Think investment..and think about what happens if things don't work out.
I personally have went with the simple gold band, but if your gal is into diamond jewelry and the whole works better do some research and keep her tastes in mind..she might want the biggest rock out there.
Not saying just because you want the biggest rock out there you are a golddigger and pretentious, but I hope your future wife would appreciate anything you give her, know what I mean?

You need to find a friend in the business. I bought a ring that my buddy was selling for 38k for 14k. That was his cost. The ring was 3 pear diamonds set in platinum. The center stone was 2.53k E color vs1. The side stones were .75k E color si1. All the stones were egl certified and mapped. The main stone was also laser marked for security. Hook ups rule. The look on her face when she got the ring was priceless.
My girl honestly said she wanted something small. She wasn't trying to work me or put any demands about ring size like some other women i've run into. I really think she desearved that ring eventhough she still tells me i shouldn't have atleast once a week.
