Electric Muscle Stimutation.

Specificly, the stim machines they will hook you up to, if you are being treated by a Chropractor. I am just wondering if any of you feel that this type of muscle stimuation is worth anything, or beneficial in any way from a BB'ing/strength-training perspective, as opposed to just being used in the rehabilitation of injuries and such. I mean, even though there isn't any resistance involved, technically you are getting a muscle contraction, albeit electrically induced. Supposedly Bruce Lee used this(or so I've read). I have thought about purchasing a stim machine if I could find one fairly-priced, for when I'm just sitting here at my PC.

Any opinions? Save my money?

I'm a bit dubious as to what kind of results you would actually get. Also how good is it for you to be conducting electrical currents through your body regularly? I would say save ya money and concentrate on fine tuning your training program and diet instead.

I own one and the amount of 'electricity' that it would take to simulate a big contraction of muscles is also probably a good bit dangerous.

I have been using mine lately to help with bicep and forearm problems. Let me tell you, when you hit the right spot on the bicep with enough intensity...the bicep draws up and you can NOT reach out with that arm and turn the intensity down. Personally, I feel like it is a little TOO MUCH contraction and there is no way I'd want to do this for a few reps or sets a few times a week. I could see something being torn.

At best it can be used as a supplement for recovery.

There is noeasy way to build muscle or get into shape. Everyhtin in life is earned. There is no easy way.

My chiro is using one in my hip rehab, but he even agreed that "EMS is not subtitution for the lazy." lol

In other words, hit the weights! :D

In 1996, I used shock treatment for a brief period, and it certainly contributed towards increasing strength. . it helped bust a plateau.

its for rehabbing injuries-- not instead of lifting!! I think you should hook it up to your PC & every time you want to make these silly threads--- shock yourself out of it...LOL!!

Just wanted to say I also agree with what has been said... rehab only, you will not build muscle...

yea i cant imagine that working

i used to have one of those ab things that you greese up your stomach and put it on... it was only good for turning it on high and hitting my friends with it

The Stim wouldn't a substitute for lifting, but rather an addition if it is worth doing(and the concensus seems to be that it aint, obviously). I'm not lazy, and I do my share of gym work, I assure you. More than most, at least where I am from. I was just wondering its' effectiveness in general is all. Reason I asked actually was because I was watching that new Football show on ESPN2 last night. "The Playmakers" I believe it is called? Anyhow, the QB was hooked up to one, and a lightbulb went off. So I figured I'd make some small talk here, and see what you all thought. Thanks

I have read (some news website some time back) that these types of machines have had to change their advertising because anything that makes specific claims that you will lose weight or change your body configuration needs to be substantiated by scientific evidence. There was no evidence for these machines so they've had to change what they say about them in their advertising.

Yer, Advertising Standards Agency says you have to put that disclaimer on sup ads here these days as well.

They won't work because you need external resistance to cause muscle damage. That's why flexing your bicep back and forth won't cause growth; technically your tricep is providing resistance but for some complicated reason it doesn't work.

Check out eBay. Sometimes pro models come up for auction and go at aorund $150 as opposed to $500. Look under Bruce Lee when you do your search. There was one for auction last week. They don't come up verey week though.

Supposedly, Bruce Lee used one when he was sleeping! don't know how true this is though. John Little would probably know.
