Effective leg routines without squats

I just found out the pain in my shoulder/neck area is herniated discs C5/C6 & C6/C7. Squats aggravates it to the point of near immobility. I've never NOT had squats as the staple of my leg routine, but it looks like I'll have to give them up.

I'm looking for some good routines for legs (minus squats) that would still be capable of adding size during growth cycles.

Thanks in advance!

Is it just the weight on your shoulders that creates the problems?

Have you seen a physio?

What has your doctor said? Are you going to have surgery to correct this?

There are also these other exercises that may help

Sissy squats

Roman chair squats with or w/out dumbells

I know people think they are gay, but for people with injuries, swiss ball against the wall, back pressed into it and squat with or w/out dumbells.

If you do higher volume rather than heavy, does it still hurt your back?

thanks for the replys everyone.

Neuro said pretty invasive surgery required. Then I took about 12 weeks off training entirely, and most of my syptoms subsided enough (some right arm weakness remains) for the doc to say that we could postpone surgery until it worsens again. I've been back at the gym regularly now for probably 3 months but have avoided squats in particular and am staying in the 10-12 rep range. It seems that the squats aggravated it the most, but could've been the heavier weights too, in hindsight.

single leg squats with dbs in each hand. builds the vmo (tear drop). russian strength athletes are all about it.
