I'm sure you'll have a fascinating career in the fast food industry.

Winny Fan,

I've got an MBA and an MIS, I'm seriously considering getting a teaching cert so I can 1) Teach HS and hit on all the 17/18 year old honeys and 2) the real reason is I'm thinking of coaching football. :)

BS and Ms in Chemistry with BA in Drama.

Wifey has BED in Early Childhood Education and MS in Reading

Winny Fan

May has an MBA. He and I have had some discussions about the worthlessness of that degree. It was nice of him to prove it to me.

Me - B.S. in Mathematics.

May, if you have passed the CPA bar exam why would you be going to court reporting school?

Myself, B.S. in Geology

BC -

Your posts age yourself. Are you in college yet or still high school? I'd guess some college, probably a state school.

There are many many factors in why an MBA /CPA may not be the answer. Economic factors change things; companies downsize. Also. those MBA/CPA jobs can be boring as hell. $120K per year is nothing if you are miserable. Trust me on that.

Court reporters make pretty good money, and you always have a job. Often, the court reporter is higher paid than the judge, because attorneys have to BUY the transcripts from the reporter. In cases with multiple defendants, reporters can make thousands per week.

In NY it is common for reporters to make well over $100K.

I'll let May take it from here.

In NYC garbage collectors probably make $75K. The average starting salary of a court reporter is about $27K.

If you are a finance major you should know that the economy fluctuates.

You should also know that accounting is boring as shit.

Both are reasons to change careers.

Plifter:

Here on LI, the numbers for reporters are much much higher. Maybe 3 times that.

NYC sanitation starts at $41K. My cousin does that.

Why do you think someone has to stay in the field related to their initial degree?

here is living proof that degrees dont mean shit...:D

if i stayed in a field with my original degree i'd be a philosopher!!! step aside plato, i can be just as lazy as you.

wodin, you can coach without teaching in most places... however, teachers get first crack at the jobs. register to be a substitute then apply to coach...

shit, i gotta send out my coaching app, thanks for the reminder.

PhD and two master's degrees and they're all basically worthless but I'm addicted to learning. Never went to school to make money.

I don't see anything odd about May learning a trade like court reporting. An MBA is one of those cookie-cutter master's degrees that is becoming useless.

Truth be told I am a College dropout, studied English, Criminal Justice and Computer Science trying to figure out what the hell I want to do. Still no clue but at least I have zero student loans.

Don't embarrass yourself.

May being a CPA doesn't de-value your degree, though your insecurity about it...well..says a lot.

May is going to have a field day with this.

_outlaw, If he has enough of the core classes with his MBA he can take the exam.

BTW...How's McDonalds Life treating you???

I'll have a B.S. in Computer Science in about 2 years if I don't decide to drop out and get a high paying job first.

Let's not insult May1010's degree. You all know full well that a degree in European History can get him a decent job as....................... a European History instructor.

So there.

And it's not a value judgment or anything, but some of y'all are writing at about 4th grade level. Don't they teach freshman comp in college anymore?

Actually, they do. They also have a required (i.e. IMPOSSIBLE to avoid regardless of how many Advanced Placement credits, etc you bring) "Literary Analysis," which requires a lot of writing. For the final paper, the grading was 80% content, 20% grammar.

I'm one of the only people who scored higher than 80%. Education these days is laughable at best.

-Warik

Sometimes having a bullshit degree like history can get you a decent job that's totally unrelated. Some companies simply require any degree. They use a degree as proof of intelligence.

Getting ready to go back to school in the fall. Not done and probably never will be. I'll always continue to educate myself.

Finally got my B.S. in 2000. It only took me until I was 29. (I was in the Army for 4 years) Construction Engineering is the degree. I wanna pave the world and make alot of money doing it.

Why wasn't...

Ph.D listed??

I saw at least one other person was listed, some of us have lives and lift. Really, I mean it...Stop Laughing :D.

B.A. Philosophy, B.S. CS
Ph.D Philosophy

Going back to school hopefully in the Spring, I hate this working everyday at the same time routine. Also being 24 it is somewhat unusual to have a Ph.D but possible, philosophy is not that hard or impressive to get a Ph.D in but I love it.

Later...Snooker

you are correct sir... they give out philosophy degrees in cracker jack boxes... phd requires a LITTLE effort though.. and money.

Let me explain a few things.

I went to the University of California where I obtained a B.S. in Biology because I had grandiose plans of going to medical school. My GPA was barely 3.5. Simply put, medical school requires a much higher GPA and thus, I had to re-think my career plans.

I decided then to become a teacher but I knew I didn't want to teach science. So, I went back the University of California and got a History degree.

I then went to California State University at Long Beach and got my Teaching Credential.

I taught for a couple of years and HATED it! I HATED it from day one.

I then went to Korea for a couple of years where I taught English and French. While there, I saved enough money to go to graduate school.

I then went to California State University at Humboldt where I completed an M.B.A. While at Humboldt, I took the minimum number of accounting classes to qualify to sit the CPA.

I passed ALL FOUR SECTIONS of the California CPA exam on the first try in 1993. I was recruited from graduate school to work in public accounting.

In January of this year, I was fired from Deloitte & Touche in San Francisco. Not laid off. I was FIRED. I hated my job. I put in ridiculously long hours and was a manager in the Tax Department specializing in telecommunications taxes. I was good at what I did but my attitude sucked. In hind sight, I would have fired me too.

Anyway, I moved to Las Vegas to re-group. I decided I was still young enough to try something else. My cousin is a court reporter in Los Angeles and I was always interested in what she did. We chatted and I enrolled in school. What the hell? I have only myself to worry about so if this is a mistake, I'm not hurting anyone but myself.

I will also tell you this, any court reporter who is making $27,000 a year is a shitty reporter. The starting salary in Los Angeles County is $76,000 a year PLUS you receive an additional $7 per page of transcript.

... and Outlaw, usually CPA's are bright and intelligent people, I don't possibly understand how you passed the test. Why don't you tell us about your career? I honestly don't think you're an accountant.

Nice story, May. I can only hope that my struggle with unnecessary education is much shorter.

Outlaw:

I tried brother. I tried. But you went ahead and embarrassed yourself. I don't think of you as insecure. In fact, I don't think of you at all. But you put up 3 posts to flame me. So if anyone had questions about your insecurity, you've answered them.

Too easy. See right through you.

ive passed lots of public exams, of which none of u will know, they are just the standard shit all uni applicants have to do. but i have A-levels (what we do age 16-18) in physics, chemistry, biology and I.T.

but u guys get those kewl capes and shit after high school. i didnt get didly apart from some cheap polyester tie :(

The simple fact of the matter is "Degrees DON'T mean shit" I worked for a High School dropout. He had his own consulting company in 88'. I worked as a programmer for him. The year I worked for him he made A QUARTER OF A MILLION DOLLARS. He is now living in West Palm Beach in a 4500sqft house w/pool w/tennis court and his company is MUCH bigger.

Bill Gates is a college dropout
Micheal Dell is a college dropout.

75% of all college graduates work in a field OTHER than what they studied for.

I have a friend who has his ME (Mechanical Engineering) from Georgia Tech. Straight out of college his starting salary was $25k (I made more than that parking cars). He started SELLING cars and made $80k the following year.

I worked with a woman who had a PHD in computer science. She couldn't walk and chew gum at the same time.

I worked with a 24year old MCSE who makes a $1000 a week working ten hours a WEEK. He is a HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE.

More than half the college grads I work with can't do simple math in their heads or compose a correctly worded and formated business letter.

I don't have a college degree. I have worked as an operations manger for an 80 million dollar company. As service manager for a 2 million dollar a year techincal service company (Revenue entirely managed by me). Programmer, Computer Tech, Network Tech. Store Manager, Purchasing Manager.

I currently make $70k a year in florida. Equivalent to about $110 in New York or California. Very low stress job.

As for court reporting,

My mother worked as a court reporter when I was younger. She does typig for them now. Most of the Reporters she works for make in execess of $200k a year. Many reporters make MORE than the Judge and the Attorneys COMBINED.

The court reporters in NY that are making $24k a year are working for the local goverment. Independants in NY most likely make several hundred thousand dollars a year. The problem with that profession is that it is VERY guarded. Almost like a "Good ole Boy network" If you're in, you're IN. If Not, too bad, so sad.

Income is NOT a result of education. It is the result of hard work, incite and having a product or service that people NEED. PERIOD, END OF STORY.

I shake my head at people with $50k - $100k in student loans and are making $40k a year. WHAT IS THE POINT.

I'd go with the Court Reporting thing but I don't have the patience to practice on a Steno for 4 or 5 hours a day for a year and a half. I'd go nutz!!!

It's going to be interesting when some of you jokers enter the work force.

Your degree will get you in the door but that is about all it will do for you. You are gonna be learning so much new shit that you are gonna be wondering "What the hell did I waste so much time in school for"

Anyway, Good Luck

Who cares? I have a few degrees, but they don't mean shit in the long run. Sure, the experience and learning you can get from school is invaluable, and I'm glad that I've had opportunities that many have not been fortunate enough to have.

But, true education comes from experience and lots of reading.........I've went to school with some really hardworkers, who were really dumbasses.

What an idiotic statement BeardedClam.

How can you learn anything about the world unless you read......or maybe you're one of those who gets all his info from headline news.....

I've never met someone that I considered to be very intelligent who was not a well-read person...

BC---I never called you an idiot, I called your idea idiotic.

Reading is essential, everything you see on TV is filtered through a third party....when you read, you are going directly to the source and interpreting statements for yourself.

TV is full of bias and hyperbole.

BeardedClam,

I've read through quite a bit of your posts and have confirmed, for myself at least, that you are a jackass. A quite consistant Jackass.

Have a nice Day

I graduates cullege ins December. Getting a BS in Concrete Management. Yeah right laugh. It gets hard and stays hard, more than I can say for my Fina/Deca dick right now. Going to start at 54k, which here in TN is damn good. Graduates wit honors 2. And they said that Jelfa juice from Poland would make me stupids?

natasan... you have a B "S" in philosophy??? i thought that was an arts degree... at least thats what my school offered it as... nifty.

and by the way...

MAY 10 10... DAMN!!! i bet you did the "gay snap" with the fingers after that one....

shake that ass as you walk away from outlaw... shake it!!!!

A college degree doesn't mean you will make more money- that isn't what degrees mean. A degree means you have achieved a certain level in an academic disclipline. It has nothing to do with making money. Hard work gets you that. However, a lot of professional jobs require a degree- a lawyer has to have a law degree, a doctor needs an MD, a teacher requires a bachelors (at least) and a teaching credential, a college professor a PhD, etc. If you just want money, work. If you want to learn about a certain field, get a degree.

I've done too many academic courses........

1. Graduated High School in Canada w/ 14 OAC's
(Thats right 14!!!)
2. Wrote the spanish SAT equivalent in Spain.
(Equivalency exam) and got my diploma from there.

then,

Did the I.B. Diploma. Which is probably the hardest
pre-university course load in the world, the next
year. Normally, you get 2 years. I had to do it in one.

then,

Simultaneously:

BSc in Bio-chemistry
while doing/

an integrated 5-year Masters program(Basically a BEng
and Meng squashed together) in Aerospace Eng.
(I'm currently going into my fifth and final year.)

And NO I'm not doing a PhD. I'm nearing burn-out frankly
so I just want to get out in the world and experience
life.

Sorry Fonz, but only American degrees are of any value.:D

LOL May.

The funny thing is the European schooling system is much harder
than the US system. However, everybody goes to the US because
it has a much more progressive/tecnologically-oriented economy.
In europe, there's also too much red-tape and not enough funding
for research.

When the Euro comes online at the end of 2002, it will re-shape
europe's economic infra-structure. (It will be the only
official currency)

No. But I'm under the impression the Canadian system
is virtually identical to the US system.
(Except for grade 13(OAC's))

In any case, I went to a private school in Canada, so
its probably safe to assume that the curriculum I studied
was harder than the US based curriculum.

First of all, NEVER compare Canada to the United States. Canada is nothing more than a poor man's United States. NEVER EVER CONFUSE THE TWO COUNTRIES.

Our education system is the most superior in the world, bar none.

May,

I know people that run their own court reporting business and make really good coin. One way to get more bang for your buck is to offer video taping for depositions as an additional service. It requires a bit of knowlege, some equipment and hiring another person, but since you are already hired by the Attorneys, it makes their life simpler for you to provide that additional service. Charge extra for it, plus extra for any video or audio copies. The digital camcorders available today and wireless mic equipment provide excellent picture and sound quality for a reasonable investment. Something to think about...

Yeah, both the B.A. and B.S. are offered.

http://www.philosophy.ilstu.edu

Only real difference is in the additional courses (non-philosophy)

For the B.S. I had to take additional mathematics (which I had from starting as a computer science major) and one physics class.

First to Matt..You started the flaming shorty,I only responded.

Second..To the fagget may....I live in Oregon and happen to know Humbolt is like going to a community colluge..Thats a pathetic school. And know way would a decent CPA firm hire anyone from a piece of shit school such as that..So quit your fucking lying little girl. You do not posses the brains to be a cpa...You went to school in humbolt...LOLOLOL..WHAT A JOKE OF A SCHOOL.I KNOW 8TH GRADERS THAT COULD GET A DEGREE THERE....YOUR PATHETIC

Incompetence

Everyone rises to their highest level of incompetence. If not because of ego or the search for money, then by the actions of others whom they discredit with their abilities.

most of you just sound like children on here with your i'm better than you are my school/country is better. can't we all just fucking accept each other for who we are and what we do? what's with all the insulting and intolerance?

i'm not saying one particular person i'm just saying that no one on this board hardly respects each other and it's really sad that they sit there and make fun of someone's choice of degrees or careers or whatever else. life's too short... i did an art degree and then part of a master's in art and realised that i didn't fit in with the art crowd, that it didn't feed my soul the way it seemed to with the others. so i'm taking another path, but am i sorry i ever did my art degree? no way! i have no regrets and it's something that i needed to do in order to narrow down what i wanted to do... and i'm more well-rounded in the end anyway, i figure.
