Eating snack cakes, more dangerous than smoking weed?

legal vs illegal, the latter always loses. I wonder how the snack industry will fare next year when trans fats are banned in Calif?

They have been moving in the direction of adjusting formula and serving size to get it under .5g per serving so they can claim 0 trans fats.
 
You don't have to eat junk food. Look at the obesity rate among American children.

Junk food addiction - are fast foods addictive
"A number of studies have been carried out in rats to look at processed foods and addiction. Dr. Ann Kelley, professor of neuroscience at Wisconsin University, together with Matthew Will, has been studying rats and diet for a number of years. One study found that a high-fat diet appears to alter the brain biochemistry in a similar way to drugs such as morphine. They say this is due to the release of opioids - chemicals in the brain - that reduce the feeling of being full.

According to Dr. Ann Kelley, rats "love the high-fat food and they eat and eat. We found there are actually brain changes that are elicited by exposure to a chronic high-fat diet." She believes that it is possible to compare the findings about rats to humans; making it very plausible that humans can become addicted to high-sugar and fatty foods.

"Those particular types of food - the fat and the sugar - are really the culprits," she said. "They're responsible for the behavioural changes that occur, the obesity and also the brain changes that look like addiction."

Bart G. Hoebel, a neuroscientist from Princeton University led a similar study into sugar addiction, which was published in the journal Obesity Research in June 2002. Again, rats were used and were gradually fed a diet with increasing amounts of sugar. The more sugar given, the quicker the rats ate it and when it was suddenly withdrawn from their food, they experienced "addiction-type" reactions, such as chattering teeth, anxiety and shaking.

According to Hoebel, sugar triggers the production of the brain's natural opioids. "We think that is a key to the addiction process," he said. "The brain is getting addicted to its own opioids as it would to morphine or heroin. Drugs give a bigger effect, but it is essentially the same process."

"The implication," he added, "is that some animals, and some people, can become overly dependent on sweet food, particularly if they periodically stop eating and then binge. This may relate to eating disorders such as bulimia."

More studies in rats by Dr. Sarah Leibowitz, a neurobiologist at Rockefeller University, New York, showed that exposure to fatty foods might reconfigure the hormonal system to want more fat. Her studies have shown that rats fed on a high-fat diet become more resistant to leptin - the hormone that stops eating. At the same time, levels of galanin - a brain peptide that stimulates eating and slows down energy expenditure - increases. She thinks that early exposure to fatty food could predispose children to always needing fatty products."

I'm not overweight and my heart, lungs and veins are completely healthy. So, this doesn't apply to me. Plus, that is about children...WTF?

Thirdly, I have to wonder about a study that correlates sweet eating in children to all of these maladies considering EVERY child I know LOVES sweets. It's pretty much universal that kids love sweets, so anything that happened to children you could correlate to eating sweets. In other words, I could look at every child that got abducted last year and pretty much bet that that kid ate sweets (they all do). So, I would have a 100% correlation there! lol. Eating sweets CAUSED them to be abducted? lol...I don't think so.
 
I don't care much for Little Debbies. I have a sweet tooth but damn, they are wwwwwwwwwwwayyyyy too sweet for my taste. Pots not my thing either. :whatever:

HR, did you read where junk food creates the same brain response and withdraw symptoms as seen in drug addiction? Not to mention Atherosclerosis begins in early adolescence and usually goes undetected until someone has a heart attack or stroke. I hope you don't feed Darwin junk food.

Junk food is just that - junk food. The problem with depriving a child of ALL junk food is that when they are not at home they will gorge and/or sneak it. And yea, it is sorta like addictive behavior. The next thing you know your kid is eating crap outta other kids' lunch boxes.

I am NOT exaggerating here. I had four kids, my sister has three. I watched others who were our friends and what they went through with their kids once they went off to school.

I know this will sound like bunk but you almost HAVE to offer your kid some junk foods. The most important weapons in a parent's arsenal to promote health and wellness in your child from an early age are:

1. Lead by example.

2. Education.

Teach the child both with your example and by your words (food pyramid my ass) simple biology (how your body breaks food down, what result will happen if you eat what food) and to never EVER stop moving... run, play, skate, bike, swing, tag, hopscotch, etc... if you don't want to play outside play dolls/army men, play board games or read a book. Limit TV and video games to a minimum.

I guarantee you, if ANY parent incorporates these simple rules while teaching their children about health and well-being they will DEFINITELY give their children a head start in life. It's not all that complicated. You just have to TEACH. :) Children are little sponges DYING to soak up knowledge.
