Early UFC Commentary - Gotta Love It

I love watching the first UFCs because of the commentary! Looking back on it now you can really see how utterly clueless Jim Brown and all the other commentators, and all the viewers for that matter, were when it came to really fighting.

Its great because its their job to say something, whether they know what the hell they are talking about or not; and when they didnt, it really showed, too.

I love the Goodrige/Herrera fight then Herrera shoots, ends up in a crucifix, and then the commentator says that Herrera is a skilled ground fighter and should be out of this position in no time...then RIGHT AFTER he says that, Goodrige unleashed the elbows and knees to the temples and damn near kills Herrera.

"....Herrera should be out of this quic...elbows....in number.....oh my."

The commentary, and better yet, the speculation about the fights is almost as entertaining as the actual fights.

there was some girl I forget her name
but Jim Brown was the only guy that sounded like he knew something at some point (during one fight at least)

Jim Brown said some real real dumb shit at times. You must have watched the 1x he said something that made any sense.

Yes they did call in Kathy Long and Bill Wallace a few times and Don the Dragon too :)

Kathy Long, a women's kickboxing legend, did some commentary. The only guy who knew anything about grappling was the guy with the bad toupe. I think his name was Bob Wall. Jim Brown used to call Royce the 'jiu-jitsow' man'.

hehe showed ufc 1 highlights on spike other night. been awhile since i've seen it.
what memories.

lmao at that ref! guys were tapping the fuck out big time and he'd just let em keep choking or get there elbow popped. not a clue.

LOL, yeah that was great when Royce looks up and tells the ref the guy is tapping and the ref didnt even realize it or know to look for it. In the first UFC, Royce let go of Shamrock when he tapped several times and then Ken started to say that he didnt tap. After that, Royce kept the chokes on until the ref pulled him off. The finals of UFC I was great because the Savate guy was tapping everything he could with both hands and feet and Royce wouldnt let go.

That was great!

How about the current UFC commentary - more educated but they still say some stupid things.

How many times can we hear Joe Rogan mention - those are only 4 oz baby gloves, they do nothing to protect the hands.

How about Bas Rutten and his 'liver shot' !

There is still rampant speculation about every fight and sometimes it bugs me how much they hype everything up. On any given day anyone can win with a knockout punch. Sometimes these guys are having an off day or are dehyrdated from travel and they are not 100% and make a mistake.

Don't be too early to count anyone out, they got there for a reason and all have the potential to finish at anytime.

thats a risk you take with 4 oz gloves
anyone can end the fight with a lucky punch
it can happen in boxing to but it takes more power and more luck with 14 or 16 oz gloves on
with 4 oz.. hell I"m supirsed people dont get dropped by jabs more often

why didn't they grab a Judo guy for commentary or refing?

How about when they let Tank Abott do commentary a couple times. Tray Telligman, the guy who had only one pec due to some accident, fought Vitor Belfort and got TKO'd. After the fight Tanks says "I bet Teligman wishes he had his other pectoral muscle right about now."

In UFC II the announcer introduces Gracie as the "Ultimate FIghting Champion Champion" (instead of championship champion for the slower folks). I think that was his last year.

LOL!!! I remember that. I was at a Valor event last night and Tank was there, drunk off his big hillbilly ass, calling Ken Shamrock "Ken Faggot Shamrock". He could barely make a good sentence but nobody cared cuz the fights were so bad that we were just happy to see someone with a name.
