Dont Walk In Front Of Me While Im Lifting In Front Of The Mirror!!!!!

punch

New member
Doing incline dbl curls at my gym in SOHO a few days ago this Personal trainer walks in front of me while Im grinding out my 8th rep w/ the 60's. What the fuck!!! I was so pissed My next set I moved close enough wher I placed my feet on the dumbell rack. I had to muster my rage not to crack her one.

Show some respect damn it! She was reaching for a dumbell and could have waited 2 min until I was done. This is precisely the reason I invested a fortune in my own home gym.

yea, is that really so bad? did he take your hand and stop your movement? could you not continue your reps without seeing youself in the mirror? just keep pumping man...dont worry about how pretty you look doing it.

You must be one of those people who walk in front of others lifting to get your weights. It isnt about looking pretty. You use the mirror to keep your form in check. Instead of having your head bent over looking at your arms you use the mirror. Besides it is a BIG destraction to have someone walk in front of you.

Maybe I came across a little strong, but think of it this way, if your watching your form in the mirror and someone SEES you performing your excersise you dont walk right infront of that person knowing that they are concentrating on the excercise at hand.

I dont care how focused you are, that is simply distracting and disrespectful. There is certain etiquette protocol that needs to be followed in a gym.

If blocking the view of yourself for a split second is that much of a distraction, I suggest that both of you need to work on your concentration. Either that, or purchase a home gym.

Most people at a public gym have no real idea of what's acceptable and what isn't. To expect otherwise is unrealistic IMO.

People walk in front of me all the time while I'm working out. Long as they don't stand there and block my view, it's simply no big deal.

Gymtime, this lady was a Personal Trainer as I stated. She should know better. I would never walk in front of anyone doing there set. Its 2 minutes until the set is done at most. Its just being courteous.

if youve been lifting for any length of time, im sure you can keep your form in check for a second while someone is grabbing a weight...

Besides it is a BIG destraction to have someone walk in front of you.

ummm....maybe if you have a really short fuse, but to most of us it may be disrepectful, but its certainly not a "BIG" distraction. Besides, the mirror isnt doing the curls, you are.

Like she was keeping up with what your doing and what rep your on and read your mind to know how many you had left. Fact is other people pay gym dues, your post makes you sound like you deserve special treatment because why?

1) relax, shit it is just curls:)
2) it is gonna happne more often than you think
3) your goal is to get big not to enforce etiquette

shit, if you need the mirror constantly to check for you have problems. I do most of my free weight sets with my eyes closed for shits sake.

better of in a dungeon with no mirrors. your form is correct if the muscles are no longer puny. :)

seriously dude, I kind of hate it too but expecting people to wait to grab some dumbbells just aint gonna happen. NOW, someone standing in front of you talking on the cell is another matter...I am in such a "softcore" gym (Ballys) nowadays so patience must be employed...haha

I'm in a NYSC so I know the dizzeal myself. I am never next to a mirror now that I think about it. I usually do everything i have to do solo. Noone around. Am I scaring people?

I had that happen to me, except I was squatting. A cleaning lady came with a huge industrial sized vacuum and used it right on the side of the rack. I would have hit her with the bar had I gone down when she was there. I just racked it and walked off...pissed, but what are you gonna do? I don't think she spoke a word of english. If she would have hit that bar either on the way down, or on the way up, it would have been bad...for the both of us.

You sound like the people that me and my training partners like to fuck with at the gym. I really hate those fags that curl in the front of the mirror.

:lmao:

i hate dudes who mack chics for prolonged periods of times at the gym, especially since its almost always the pretty boys or the "i think im huge in my wife beater but im actually a bitch" crowd . More than once i have spit out a " hey buddy this ain't a bar"

What can I say, I truely enjoy looking at my muscles work while I am working them. Its funny, Ive trained w/ Jim Quinn and other BB's and they all use the mirrors for motivation. Seems like those opposed may NOT like what they see. LOL

The people who go to the gym and spend all their time talking with their friends really give me a lot of inner motivation. Seeing them hardly lift a weight during their entire visit to the gym and seeing them never gain any muscle or lose any fat really does make me lift harder.

I sometimes think of these guys as I am struggling to lift another rep and how if I don't want to be like them I'd better focus and make sure I lift that weight. It's funny to see a group of about 3 men all standing around a piece of equipment for about 15 minutes and not actually lift anything whilst talking about something exceedingly trivial (yes they talk loud enough so you can't miss a single word).

I see those guys, I hear them and then I lift another rep beyond what I thought I could do.

There are no mirrors in my home gym:)

There are no mirrors in strongman contests...there are none in powerlifting. Wait...there are none in bodybuilding either...;)

My 2 cents...

Yeah, using a mirror to watch your form on some excersises is usefull and in some people's opinion necessary. However, it sounds to me like you were working out in front of the dumbell rack! I HATE PEOPLE WHO STAND THERE IN FRONT OF THE DUMBELL RACK AND PUMP OUT THIER REPS!!! How the hell is the rest of the gym supposed to grab a set of dumbells? What? You can't take a step back or move away 10 feet?

I also hate those people that sneak a fart off in a crowded gym...geez! Talk about wrecking you set as you breath deep!

Everyone has a pet peeve in the gym! The only ones that are sacred are what you have your hands on. Be polite, and leave the egos at the door, and keep the testosterone under your skin!

Mirrors, dumbell racks, cell phones, yaking away... Just politely ask the person to
a)please move over
b)hang on a sec
c)answer that or turn it off please
d)move the discussion away from the machine or please use it.
e) ask very loudly "O.K. who the hell shit thier pants in here?"

If someone were to get pissed about the mirrors in my gym you'd get laughed out of your membership. The room is so busy mirrors there's no room to stake a claim on a section of mirror.

Ease up everyone...welcome to a society!!!!

I'm sorry, but you can't just expect people to put there workout on hold while you use the mirror. That is why there is that "pathway" in between the dbl rack and the benchs. (duh) Esp. if it is a crowded gym like mine. Maybe it is destracting to you, but you also have to share. If you want to be by yourself, go in the corner somewhere and do your curls standing up.

You must have some serious heart burn....

all in love
Frisco

I still feel that using the mirror is a bad thing...

2 mins is a very long set :). And i agree with everyone else when they say that someone walking infront of you while ur lookin in a mirror is no big deal at all. And as B-fold said, 99% of the time, using the mirror is a bad thing.

Griz - i will fart whenever i want in the gym, and won't attempt to "sneak it off." tis better to let the fart then try to go through a set of squats or deads holding it in. Ever been in a gym ? they smell like sweat, at least mine. Theyre not pleasant places. maybe yours has little bowls of potpouri though.

:D

it happen at my gym the other day, this HUGE(Fat) 40-45 years man was doing Arnold Presses abotu one foot from the DBs Rack, when this 16 years old "pot-head" tried to reach in front of him to grab a pair of DBs. The man started yelling and swearing at the kid like crazy. The kid was almost crying, everybody started laughing.

Anyways, now nobody steps near the man, and the kid hasn't ben seen in months !!

I think the question is not if mirror is good or not but if you prefer to use it or not. For some person it can be good to see how the movement is done and some will tell you that it's motivate them. At the opposite some do not like, well, in conclusion, act intelligently at gym. :)

I really dont care if someone walks in front, I just dont like it much when they stand in front. I remember doing incline presses with the 120's once, and this asswipe stood so close to the front of the bench I couldnt sit up and put them down. In the end I aimed for his feet when I dropped them and he kinda got the idea

I particularly hate it when:

1) People lift in front the dumbbell rack so I can't get the dumbbells I need for my next set until they're done.

2) People walk too close to a bar I'm lifting, so I feel I need to adjust to prevent them from bumping into it.

3) Somebody feels the need to grab three pairs of dumbbells of different weights, so I can't the weight I need till they're done with all three pairs.

Heh, this post just made me think of those.

An other thing that I do not understand and it might be only in my gym but when I am in my last set of an exercice, example dumbbell press, and the guy sit next to me watch me and see that I cannot do my last rep and stay on his bench watching me... Well I know I could ask him before my set to spot me but... I'm sure some here know what I mean. ;)

that's just the shit you have to tolerate when working out in the gym with newbies especially the first part of the year:confused:

just last week i was doing squats 405 rep sets. went to go take piss and get some water...come back couple of teens had already started unracking my plates

i'm WTF!you youngsters need to put my damn plates back on

Wait a minute...it happened the other day, but the kid hasn't been seen for months since?

I gotta tell you, the fat guy was wrong. He should've waddled his fat ass away from the DB rack...many of us simply do NOT have time to stand around and wait for some pudknocker to finish his set before we get the DBs we need.

Yelling and cussing at another gym member in anger? BAM, banned from my gym. Training partners can call each other pussies all they want, but screaming at some kid is just retarded. The kid should've kicked fatty in the nads.

No offense, bro, but...someone crossed between you and the mirror, and you were ready to slug her? I realize it's annoying, but Christ! You must've had a bad day or something :(

Wait 2 minutes? That's more than showing respect; that's revolving her life around your set!

I understand you're pissed, but I think you're being unrealistic...you're obviously big and old enough to understand that if you distance yourself a certain pace from the mirror, someone might walk in front of you. When that happens, you can blame yourself as much as anyone; you chose where you'd do your set, not them.

I also think you know that stopping for minutes at a time just so you don't disturb someone's set is a ridiculous notion...if we all did that, we wouldn't get anything done.

I hate to break your balls about this because I do understand exactly what you're talking about, but like I said, I think your expectations of nitwits in the gym are a bit too high.

Don't flex in front of the mirror when I am arround. . . . .I get embarrased because watching someone do this in front of a crowd is ludicrous especially when they have 16 inch guns and no legs.

Watching someone pose with a look of strain and a red face is just plain silly.

Can posing or showing off be done at home in front of a mirror?

I thought the gym was a place to train?.

go go louden_swain go go :D

You are right, and what is not most funny is that usually is not the bigger guy who is flexing

The only time when I would consider posing in the gym is when getting ready for a show, it couldnt hurt to practice posing in front of strangers

True, but there are typically posing rooms or aerobics rooms where this can be performed.

any posing in the mirror in the gym is FAIRPLAY!

we all come in there for one purpose, to improve our physique.

flexing in front of the mirror while having a pump is fair play!

lifting your shirt to admire them pump abs is fairplay?

Why can't this be done at home? People who are flexing in front of everyone are taking up space and getting in the way of other people who are trying to train!

Exactly, the gym is filled with tools to transform a physique. It shouldn't be a place with circus like activities or other horse play.

flexing in front of the mirror while having a pump is fair play!

Again, why can't this be done at home? Why does this have to be done in front of everyone else? Remember, not all people are bodybuilders.

I never need to rip off my cloths to see if I have a pump. I train in sweats and I can feel my pump. I am not about to look like a fool in front of everyone just to see if I have a damn pump. I will check when I get home.

DR.SLOE:fro: ~

some of ya'll just a bunch of damn BEACH BODIES......goin round flexin' your shit......high sidin' in front of the mirrors n shit.
...i gots a 6 pack....dont see me flexin' for them hoe's....this what i do to those punkass beach bodies":smash:

and then :mp5:

and then :splat:

I don't pose in front of the mirror, but it does irritate me when some idiot is standing right in front of me when I'm on the squat rack. For me, it helps me to stay focused. I have my music and the spot I pick out to look at. I don't freak out if someone is passing by, but dammit, if you see me and you're not doing shit (just taking up space)...then get out of my way (please).:)

My closing remarks;

There is a reason why we lift, some for power some for sculpting. I am in the camp of developing muscle for overall fullness, symmetry and seperation. The latter being a more visual aspect of lifting. The " Mirror" is a tool. That is why they have them in the gyms to begin with. It is a borometer to gauge form and to see the muscle in an engorged state. The mirror gives you a first hand glimpse of your hard work in the present and the fruits of your labor afterwards. Those hobbyist that frequent the gym once a week need to realize that for some, gazing into the mirror and seeing the veins popping out of your skull as you lower 405 on the squat rack for reps is a religous experience.

A picture speaks a thousand words, and for Body Builders the mirror is often your best critique. I know of NO pro body builders that dont consider the mirror a part of their lives. When you wear the fruits of your labor every day you better bet your ass I am going to look at it as much as I can. Peace

In my gym, posing is tolerated only for those preparing for a show. Anyone else doing it is laughed at, and rightly so.

While I do think it is unreasonable to expect someone to wait two minutes to get the equipment they need, I also think it is rude to park yourself in front of someone who is using the mirror during a set. I just grab what I need and get out of the way. I expect others to do the same for me. -john

Agreed. Not everyone in a gym is a bodybuilder. Many are strength athletes whose appearance is far from their priority.

I have to admit, I get irritated sometimes when that simple fact is forgotten. Especially on this board.

it's an individual thing...your goals are YOUR goals. so if you want to be able crush cans bare handed, then cool--go for it...or if you want to look like Fabio (you know what I mean) then that's cool too! it's all about you when you're in the "trenches.":garza:

I cant stand a mother f##ker to stand all close to the dumbell rack so nobody can use any or sitting all close with your feet up on the rack. Proper form is having your feet planted on the ground anyway, unless doing decline. And if you have to use a mirror TAKE YOUR LAZY ASS and pick up your 30s 40s or whatever your curling and go to spot that does'nt have so much traffic!!!

Don't train near the dumbell rack, you dumbell's.

I will get in your way on purpose if you don't have any more sense than that.

Dumbell!
