I like Needto's suggestion of Brutus. I'm in a Latin phase these days, Ceasar has class and implies strength, so does Nero.

Then there's Greek mythology, if you like Axel how about Atlas, the dude that held the earth on his shoulders. Apollo, the god of the sun. Achilles, a Greek hero. Hector, a prince of Troy. Titan(s), the sons of the Goddess Earth. Zeus, supreme god.

Gotta get to know the dog. I have one cat she went through three names before we settled on one we all liked (us as well as her). Sometimes an animals name comes to you instantly, sometimes you have to live with the critter for a while and get to know them.
