Does anyone on this board see a therapist?

Saw a therapist once for six months to get over abusive relationship. Then was on anti-depressives to get through final year college exams. Thats it , helped a little to talk but hurt too. .

That's the problem. When you begin therapy, because you start to look at things directly, you can actually get more depressed. What happens is that antidepressants energize the client before they begin having an effect on depression. The result can be a big increase in anxiety -- and, particuarly in the case of people under 18, an increase in suicidal thinking. The irony of depression is that it typically robs pepole of the energy to kill themselves even if they think about it.

I did see a psychiatrist and a therapist about 3 years ago. I am beginning to think I need to go back again. These mood swings are killing me.

My roommate and I were talking about this last night. For me it would seem that I need to find out what is making me depressed, and then work to correct it, and not run away from it.

I think it would be easier to figure out what is right in my life, than list out everything that depresses me.

I think that the mental health resources in the US are something we as Americans have every right to take advantage of to make us as happy as possible.....after all "Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness"

Go for it Free, you won't regret it.

The thing is sometimes talking doesn't help. You can have a chemical imbalance. Or maybe just talking isn't good enough.

Like if just working out and watching diet and taking supplements isn't good enough, some might choose to do steroids.

If talking to people and being introspective and trying to better yourself arent good enough, some may turn to a psychiatrist.

Oh, I'm not preaching to those who would take advantage of what is available. No. I'm talking about how I feel about me.

Self-awareness and introspection are powerful tools. I think a major reason many find them to be insufficient is because humans seem to have an infinite capacity for self-deception.

Let's use the AAS analogy. If I am not eating or training properly, I have no real business using AAS. The foundation must be there. Then, if something is still lacking, I use AAS. If other methods (self awareness, introspection, outlets, removing negative components, facing things which cause discomfort) fail to adequately address the problem, THEN I see no shame in seeking additional measures.

In fact this has been proven repeatedly. Antidepressants diminish symptoms of depression much less effectively than when combined with psychotherapy. In that case, their effectiveness rises from about 40 to 60 percent.

Yes , but actually the guy made me give my word that I'd wouldn't do anything stupid , at least until the next time I saw him. I told him that I barely knew him but he wouldn't let me leave the office until i did. Very few people know what depression is really like - total lethargy , its very much a spiral.
