Does anyone on this board see a therapist?

I would sinccerely hope that at least 80% of this board sees a therapist.

It is funny how everyone these days is on some kind of medication to treat depression.

People don't understand that anxiety, temporary sadness, mood swings, and some phobias are just normal human qualities! People in less industrious nations had them, and never needed some kind of medication to always make you happy. The medical industry really exploded this as a psychological crisis just to pull in more money from insurances

I make no apologies. :)

I see a psychotherapist. I guess he helps a little bit.

I take drugs to improve my mood. My health insurance pays for it.

People need to realize that being weak and not very pleasing to look at with your shirt off is a normal human quality. So is being at higher risk for heart disease and not being very fit overall.

Hey people in less developed countries get by without Whey Protein Concentrate, why do people take it?

I have the opportunity to make my quality of life better and I am taking it.

Kind of stupid to preach that any form of self-improvement shouldn't be pursued because people in less developed countries get by without it, especially on a FITNESS board.

Oh, and BTW, it's "industrialized," not "industrious."

I talk to my dogs. They listen. I talk to my gf. She listens. I talk to myself. I listen.

All that I require for my sanity is myself, though.

I do not use mood-altering drugs. If I am in pain, I am being told that there is something causing me pain that needs to be addressed. If I feel sorrow, I know that there's something so great that its loss is worth being sad over.

I wouldn't possess an emotion that had no use.

The thing is sometimes talking doesn't help. You can have a chemical imbalance. Or maybe just talking isn't good enough.

Like if just working out and watching diet and taking supplements isn't good enough, some might choose to do steroids.

If talking to people and being introspective and trying to better yourself arent good enough, some may turn to a psychiatrist.

It's also true that many other countries are organized differently to provide emotional support. In most of the third world -- and throughout much of Europe for that matter -- the individual is seen as relatively secondary to the family or community. So, while there is some sacrifice of the individuality we value -- though they often don't see it that way at all -- they have the immediate support of their communities.

I have friends who are psychologists in Spain. The idea that people go to therapists for "personal growth issues" is ludicrous to most of the Spanish. There, psychological services are for the seriously disordered.

As to medication: Many of the SSRI's function to normalize people in a manic, consumer culture. They effect many people much like speed-- Prozac is even called "legal speed" -- so they improve productivity, a big value in our culture -- not so big a value in other cultures. In frequently repeated studies, they prove no more effective than placebos for about 50 percent of users. They reduce symptoms of depression by 41 percent on average -- compared to a reduction of 31 percent among placebo users. They are highly overrated.

I assume people have seen the recent news that Paxil can cause suicidal ideation among patients under 18. This is a reprise of the claim over 10 years ago that Prozac did the same thing in among total users -- a claim that the FDA rejected.

Saw a therapist once for six months to get over abusive relationship. Then was on anti-depressives to get through final year college exams. Thats it , helped a little to talk but hurt too. Ah sure fuck it............. made me dead cautious on relationships thats for sure.
