Do you make your guests take their shoes off?

I recently ran across this ... does anyone do this? Explain the mindset to me, please. I mean, if you're worried about people tracking dirt into the house, why not just get a couple of good doormats?

Around here it is totally RUDE to not take your shoes off.
of course that includes winter boots too.

In Japan they usually had extra slippers for me at the door (that did not fit lol)

Where is around here? I don't know where moderation is  I know that Paradise, Pennsylvania is right down the road from Intercourse, PA, but can't don't know WHAT state to find Moderation in :qt:

In places where it's expected, do you have a place to sit down so you can do the shoe removal/replacement?

Depends on the cleanliness of the house.

I had a friend who got all puffy that I didn't take my shoes off in his dirty, stained-floor, unvacuumed apartment. I just laughed at him and told him that my socks are white, and they are going to stay white.

I can understand tradition, but there has to be some logic or reasoning behind it.

no.... We take ours off as a rule, but company does not nor do we when their here...

I do if it's wet outside but I don't have much carpet other than bedrooms

Most all our guests offer to do so right away. I do the same as well when visiting others. I don't have holes in my socks so what is the big deal ;)

I was never THAT much of a stickler for it but my husband is for some reason. Even though he's the messiest mofucker I know, and the carpet is in crap condition (Im ready to yank it all up and put down flooring throughout) he is still veru strict about shoes worn in the house.

Now, in his defense, he lived his first 5 years in Japan so perhaps he picked it up from there. But he says its because the bottom of shoes carry whatever dirt, grime, and germs are out on the street and why would you want that all over your carpet. Good point.

Same reason why you wouldnt put your shoes on the top of a counter or kitchen table etc

No I don't make anyone take their shoes off........like I'd want to smell someone's stinky feet.....

Wow, it's more common than I realized, I mean that. To each his own, I guess. I've never thought about it, since I have an "air lock," my front porch. I have several doormats out there, by the time people get inside their shoes are fine.

Exactly!!!!

Then you have all that gross outside whatever, dirt, grime, germs all over your clean floors and house...

do you want to walk around barefoot after that, or lay on your floor ever, then get into your bed...

It's so easy to take off the shoes.

Who wants to drag bumspit and loogies from the bottom of their now contaminated feet into their bed? :worried:

Yuck

I guess it's not only the visible dirt, but the germs and grime, etc that gets on your shoes from walking outside.

Not so much about the dirt, but keeping the wear down on my carpet. I paid an arm and a leg to have it installed. It only takes a couple of seconds to take off and put back on your shoes. I find it rude when people walk in my house with their shoes. Plus I have dogs and if they step in some dogshit, it cleans way easier off the tile than the carpet.

Yeah same reason, here it's considered very rude to enter someone’s home without first removing your shoes and basically it's unhygienic.

yes.

growing up, my family didn't. mom swept and vaccumed constantly.

Here, shoes off at the door, the carpet stays very clean that way.

Started that when living with my college buddy my junior year. He was Chinese and insited on the policy. Makes sense, but you end up with all kinds of shoes at the doorway. Now I keep them in the garage.

Absolutely. The bottoms of our shoes nasty as hell. Who in God's name would want to track all that funky filth into their home?

My parents have a jumbo luxury home and shoes are only allowed in the marble floored foyier. Beyond that it's slippers or bare feet.

I assume you all have emaculate floors.

If my shoes and socks are cleaner than your carpet, I will under no circumstances dirty myself for your stupid traditions.
