LMAO, like having age automatically affords you respect?

Please.

'Nigga Please' in your avatar of an old man, a former pope in fact, is the pinacle of respect for your own elders.

to a certain degree, yes. everyone deserves a certain amount of respect as a human being, until they open their mouths and remove it (or verify it).

Love the stab at my avi coming from someone who "LMFAO" at it (your k msg). I read it as the pope saying "Nigga please." Look at the expression on his face. It's humor.

A 18 yr old saying, "fuck you old man..." to a 70 year old because he doesn't get out of the way fast enough is certainly not humor. Yes, I've witnessed that before...and other similar things.

I don't know, maybe we were raised differently. My parents are old enough to be my grandparents. My dad was 54, and my mom was 42 when I was born, so I was probably raised a little more "old fashioned" thank god!

I'm (almost) 35, and for the most part people my age and older seem to still have that respect I speak of. But just a few years younger and it seems to slide dramatically for the most part.

So, what about you Jh1...you like it when your waiter or the kid at starbucks or wherever says, "hey sport, how's it goin?" "What can I getchya pal?" "Here ya go buddy!" "Thanks a lot chief!"?

If you're cool with that, then great. I'm not so cool with it...it bugs me. I don't think it's professional in that setting, and outside of that setting I don't think it's courteous.

If it's a friend, that's obviously different. And of course you can call me any of the above and then some, Jh1. :qt: :qt:

I just have an aversion to people with age thinking they automatically deserve my respect - I'm no longer young -I'm 30 - but's always bugged me.

Quite simply.... respect is earned. At least any respect I give out is earned.

That's not to say I run around disrespecting everyone until they prove to me their worth.... if I worked serving people, yeah - I would show respect. No I don't like anyone being overly casual with me when they are serving me - regardless of their age or mine.

Obviously - it's the age thing that I have a problem with.

I don't think someone being older than me or much older means that they get my respect regardless of how they act. But if I am in a grocery store and there is an old woman blocking me in the isle, it's "pardon me, ma'am." When my boss asks me to do something, it's "yes sir."

There is feeling real respect for someone, and treating someone with respect. I think they are two different animals. I will treat anyone and everyone with respect until they have done something to make me feel they don't deserve it (and even then I'll still be polite most of the time), and what treating someone with respect ultimately translates to varies by person and how they relate to my life (and yes, age).

See, I think I am the only one on the thread that metioned respecting CHILDREN.

I've always told my girls, "You should try your best to be respectfull of someone even if they don't respect you, because above all SELF-RESPECT is paramount."

Now, I have not always been able to achieve this, but it is something to strive for.

Can you imgaine how happy A CHILD is when an adult addresses them as "Miss Jones" or "Mr Jones"? It makes them feel grown-up and for the most part, actually affects a change in that child's behavior, at least towards you.

One of the reasons why I prefer Texas, and Europe (in general) to NJ is because of the RESPECT that people (in general) show each other.

And yes, if I see a person that is my senior I will automatically respect them because even though I am only approaching 40 for them to have lived life longer, I am certain they have seen some shit and don't need anymore from me....

Who am I to think that I can change the world by being polite and courteous to everyone anyway?

Psssssssssssssssshhhhhhh

I guess I am just a fool.

(And no, this ain't Grumpy Old Man.... this is his lazy wife doing the same crap that I bitched at him less than a week ago. I suppose I ain't so perfect after all.)
