see now Wodin basically proved my point..americans arent interested in any of the sport THEY DONT WIN. so ofcourse, you wouldnt know about cross country skiiers. or Curling, or combination, or the nordic challenge. but i was just curious seeing as all the norwegian reporters were amazed on how they tried to not get this information out. is it because they want the olympics to be remembered as perfect? or what?

The little bit of the Olympics I watched yesterday had a story about some new drug showing up in a cross country skier. I can't remember the name but it is used to increase red blood cells.
They all cheat. That is what sucks about it. If they ain't cheating or haven't cheated in the past then it is very likely they aren't going to win.
I think the IOC should just say fuck it......... whatever you want to put in your bodies to win a medal go for it. Especially those countries that have socialized medicine.

In only the second Games in which the IOC has employed a test for drugs that increase the production of oxygen-carrying red blood cells, the IOC rescinded the most recent gold medals won by cross-country skiers Larissa Lazutina of Russia and Johann Muehlegg of Spain.
The IOC announced that they and another cross-country skier, Olga Danilova of Russia, tested positive for darbepoetin, which is a drug with a similar molecular structure and function to the more commonly recognized erythropoietin (EPO), which has long been believed to be a favorite of distance athletes. All of the positive tests resulted from out-of-competition tests administered Thursday.
Darbepoetin, available by prescription in the United States since last September, is so new that it isn't even on the IOC's banned drug list. The IOC justified its action today by citing a clause in its anti-doping code that encompasses substances closely related to banned drugs.
Endurance-aiding drugs have long been considered the bane of distance sports such as cross-country skiing and cycling. Prior to the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney, the IOC had no way to detect such drugs, leading to the belief that they were widely abused. Blood tests routinely used by the international cycling and skiing federations can not detect EPO or darbepoetin itself; the tests can only measure elevated blood levels and raise suspicion of drug use.
The positive tests announced here today provide the first substantive evidence that the test is more than a threat. The combined blood-and-urine test turned up no positives in Sydney.
IOC Medical Commission Chairman Arne Ljunqvist said the expulsions prove that the IOC is keeping pace with even the newest drugs on the market.
Ljunqvist said the positive results send "a very important message" to athletes who use performance-enhancing drugs. "We are on their heels," he said. "We have one of the most modern labs in the world working well."
The results analysis was conducted in an IOC-accredited laboratory that was set up in Salt Lake City for these Games.
Lazutina was forced to relinquish the medal she won in the 30-kilometer classical race, but she was allowed to keep the silvers she won earlier in the 15K freestyle and 10K combined. The 30K medal had been her 10th, tying the women's Winter Games record.

Canadian snowboarder Ross Rebagliati's gold medal was withdrawn when he tested positive for the drug last week. His medal was reinstated when an arbitration panel said the IOC had failed to follow its own rules governing drug tests. Because of the panel's ruling, no action is planned against others who test positive for marijuana.
Rebagliati claimed the positive finding was a result of second-hand smoke and that he had not used marijuana since last April.

Something has happened to the olympics over the years. It has become less wordly and more americanized. I don't kinow about anyone else but I have definitely lost interest in the games, well, except swimming, powerlifting, and track and field. There is too much controversy. Anyone hear about the situation with Apollo Ono?

I think I got the point. Apollo was awarded the gold in his last race. From what I know of speed skating...it is a pretty aggressive and competitive sport. So someone gets knocked down, I am SURE it has happened before.

Now have the games becomed more Americanized? Yes they have, but only because they country with the most money and infuence is the US and they have, well, the most influence. Consider this, the olimpics have been since the beginning of time an even strictly for the amateur atheletes. No professionals were allowed to compete in the games, but since the US had a shortage of amateur Atheletes willing to put in all the work required and get paid next to nothing and live in sport camps instead of houses they, the US, forced fundamental changes in how these games are played. And this fundamental change was to allow Professionals to compete, case and point? The Dream Team. Also the US can push harder for new sports to be added, sports for which they already have athelets lined up to take the gold, silver and bronze, hence the higher medal total and controversy.
Now about doping, it's really funny how we do not hear the US atheletes testing positive for anything. It's always the Other countries that have this problem. Do you mean to tell me that the US atheletes are 100% clean and the foreign atheletes need to use drugs to compete with the Americans? No ofcourse not, but the testing seems skewed, so more controversy. But you will not hear about it in the American Media. Just like you will not hear how Lance Armstrong wins all the Tour DeFrance races when he underwent treatment for testicular cancer, You know what that gives him? A free ticked to use Testosterone injections, cause surely everyone knows his testicles were removed. So how come there is not even any questions being asked about his doping? Why is he allowed to test positive? Why is he suddenly winning races he basically sucked at before?
it's issues like that, that make games of any kind sour with resentment. I am not taking sides, but sometimes the US media presents itself and it's deciples to be holy, with the bad guys always being somewhere alse and not in the US.

actually they dont rank it that way. they rank it by who has the most golds. so the ranking was as follows:
Germany 12 gold 16 silver 7 bronze
Norway 11 gold 7 silver 6 bronze

I still believe that the games have become americanized, you have not swayed me to believe otherwise. Anyway, a good majority of the 'american' athletes are from other countries. As it is often referred to as the "melting pot" of the world, we cannot expect anything else.
