I never feel it working my chest too much or any where near my rib cage but I fell it in my outer lats a whole bunch.

Everything I've ever read indicates there might be a very small stretch effect in teenage trainees. However, I've never seen any references to actual studies or research.

In adults, no.

I'm with acuraman, I feel them in my lats more than my chest...

But kids that age are still growing anyway. How can it be attributed to excercise?

There have been a few bodybuilders who swear by it. I asked a doc once and he said the fibers between the rib cage get harder as a person gets older and its possible but not likely to stretch it out. A good exercise to use anyways.

A good point, and why I suspect no one's ever done any studies - how could you isolate this effect? Unless you had a control group that did nothing else for chest - and did no breathing squats, etc. - you couldn't attribute the gains to just the pullovers.

there are many very competent trainers and pro bodybuilders who believe so - arnold himself being one of them. but has it been proven? no, i dont believe so, and if it has, it was probably very recently. imo, they might give you the look of having a wider rib cage, but to actually expand a part of your skeleton doesnt seem very likely.

Sure. Try them like this: Use a heavy dumbbell. At the top of the motion, drop it on your sternum.

Now, hopefully, you'll end up cracking it down the center. In the ER, ask the nice doctors to maybe put some wood glue or something in the crack so that it stays open.

Boom. Expanded ribcage.

Otherwise, no. Pullovers will not change the shape of your skeleton.

you know i have stumbled on a interesting observation regarding skeletal changes following the persistant execution of a particular movment.

and I think yes you can change skeltal structure/

however you have to do a movement consistant enough over a long peroid of time to achive those effects.

for example.

swimmers who have been swimming since child hood, are you going to tell me that their shoulders are not a little wider than what they otherwise would have had the with lack of that motion?

or gymnist who have hung on rings since they were seven?

or consistent deadlifters, who have wide backs?

food for thought

For all you kids out there, Belial is just being a smartass. This is extremely dangerous and should never be actually tried. Now, with that in mind, if you really want to expand that rib cage like the pros, all you need is two close friends, each weilding an ice pick. Have them stand on either side of you and.......

Genetics

It's all genetics. If you train by doing 1 set of high intensity breathing squats for 20 reps and still see no rib cage expansion, then I have no idea what will expand it.

They worked for me!

I have two other brothers that workout as much as I do and they have never done pullovers and I have always done them! My point is that my chest (rib cage) is much larger than both of my brothers! They should be done in your teen years to see better results.

It is i m p o s s i b l e to change your skeleton with an exercise like pullovers. They will not expand your ribcage.

I also like pull overs once in a while - it is a great stretch for your arms, chest, and abs, especially when you drop the hips when the wieght is lowered.

Has anyone swung the wieght back and hit themselves in the forehead with the DB when the reps are high and wieght heavy? I have...

It seems to be it is a good stabilizer move - good, but expanding bones - I really doubt it.
