Do My Obliques Need Improvement?

Hey guys, I’ve done some research and tried a lot of different things and I’m still unsure what the best way to improve my obliques is. They seem to be too blocky and wide. I found some ideas on how to improve them, but I don’t know if any of them will solve this problem:

1) Could changing my oblique training solve this? I've tried a lot of different exercises and adjusted a lot of different things about my oblique training and I've yet to find anything that works.

2) I currently do heavy deadlifts, straight leg deadlifts, and squats each week. I’ve heard some people say that these exercises can cause this type of problem, although if possible I'd prefer to keep doing them and find another way to solve this.

3) Am I just being too paranoid or overly critical about my obliques? I included pictures of myself for you to evaluate. No matter how much body fat I’ve lost my obliques still seem to be too blocky and wide. If I can improve my physique enough I’m interested in modeling, but I’m unsure if improving my obliques is one of the things that I need to focus on in order to have a chance to do that.

4) Are my obliques fine and the only reason that they look wide in the first picture because of the camera angle?

Right now I seem to be stuck and I don’t understand how to evaluate this to decide what I need to do. Any advice from someone who understands this better then I do would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

I would think that adding width in your chest, shoulders and back is what you are looking for to give you a more narrow looking waist. You need to add size to your upper body, IMO, to give you that V shape. =-)

Thank you for the good advice.

Like the lady said Bulking should be your goal right now. You should eat or drink all of the high quality protien you can get your hands on. And, when you feel like you can't eat anymore then go train hard on large muscle groups. That is just my opinion. It is hard to tell from the pic but you appear fairly young and you will have plenty of time to lean out if you can get the muscle on.

Train, Eat, and Sleep.

You're being too paranoid and overly critical of yourself, lol. Seriously, man, you look fine.

You have plenty of room for a lot of filling out and can add a lot of muscle to your frame, if they're your goals. Adding muscle all over the place will make the waist look smaller, like the above-post said. Even if you gain a little fat in the process, it is still okay, as it is MUCH, MUCH easier to shed some bodyfat than it is to gain muscle.

*EDIT*

I missed that you're an aspiring model. That is something to evaluate. Carrying heavy amounts of muscle and modeling are not condusive to one another. If you want to model, it is really going to be mostly about diet/caloric restriction and doing some type of resistance training, something you enjoy so that you do it consistently.

A lot of times genetics will dictate what your physique is best suited for. If modeling is your goal, I'd advise you to send those shots to as many agencies and companies as possible and ask for feedback and critique.

Whatever you decide to do, good luck, and if you want advice on strength training and building muscle, you'll get plenty of it here.
