Dextrose Ladies post workout???

Hi Ladies!

Do any of you take dextrose(powder form) in your shakes post-workout? I never have but i saw on one of the boards that women should also. I just thought the sugar would put weight on(which i don't want). Would i benefit from adding dextrose to my shake or should i just skip it? If i should take it, how much? Is it only necessary after weight training? What if you only do a cardio session, is it still needed?
Unsure and needs some knowledge on this,
Thanks a bunch!

If your trying to lose weight skip it for sure. Go for an isolate protien it will give you the fast absorption of protien that you are looking for with out the carbs.

I assume you're asking because you want more then just a yes or no answer. So here goes. When it comes to building muscle and loosing fat it does not matter if you're a man or a woman, the universal principles used in achieving either goal, are just that, universal, so whether man or woman they work the same on a bilogical level. But some women like to differentiate their workouts and diets from the guys in a belief they are somehow different in this approach, but rest assure they're not.
So now to your question. Yes you can and should use a dextrose and protein shake in your workout meal plan. Weight gain in the form of fat is something that's caused through excessive calories over a long period of time, so if your protein/dextrose shake's calorie content is within range of your daily consumption, you'll have no problems and it's a good nutrient timing strategy. I have hovewer, tweaked this aproach even further and discussed it at lenght on the Anabolic board. Since i don't know your weight i'll work with a safe assumption on my recommendation.

Use 25 grams of dextrose and 25-50 grams of protein. Start with less protein and adjust it's intake accoring to how you "feel". Drink this shake 45 min BEFORE your workout. This will cause the following reaction: Your insulin level with skyrocket, this in conjunction with the protein will flood your bloodstream and muscles will readily available amino acids thanks to insulins shuttling capabilities. And don't worry about fat gain as there's no fat present with the insulin spike, the protein stabilises the glycemic response, and lastly the insulin response subsides very quickly, at which time your already in the gym reaping it's benefits. You'll gain LBM (lean body mass)quicker, have insane pumps in the muscles you're working, energy to spare and the new muscle gained will aid in stripping fat right off, come diet time.

Try it and you'll become a convert.

Never have taken it, never will. I never had seen, or FELT, a need for it. I have gotten great results WITHOUT using it, so why use it?

Women have different insulin senstivitiy than males also. If you choose to try it, use a VERY low amount.

Honestly, if you feel a need for some carb replacement after working out, I think a smarter source for most females would be 1/2 a banana or similar fruit. It is still a carb, mostly sugar, so it should help with energy/recovery.

Thanks alot guys for taking the time to answer my questions. I really appreciate all the responses. Gregory, you asked me about my weight, i'm about 125lb or 130lb. Height is 5"4. I do get confused about to do it or not, since there are different opinions for ladies to take the dextrose or not. I'm currently on All the Whey protein so would i add the dextrose to that or an isolate(or does it really not matter about what type)? Later when i get home after my workout, should i have a little carbs like brown rice or skip it entirely since i got the dextrose in?
Thanks again!

With your weight i would go with 25 grams of dextrose and 25-50 grams of protein, (all the Whey is fine) but like i said, do it before the workout. This will also eliminate the need for a PW (post workout) shake. You'll be able to just wait the hour or so and go right to your PW meal.

Opinions on this topic vary just like anything in the fitness community, so just give it a try for a week. If you don't like it you can just stop and throw it out but at least you'll have tried it and have the experience under your bealt, so go ahead give it a try.

PS.

Go to http://www.ProteinFactory.com to check out their penta protein. Me and my wife use it exclusively for years now, it's synergistic effect is far superior to a regular whey. Read up on it and see for yourself.

Thanks alot Gregory for responding quickly. Since i never tried dextrose before, how do you measure it(either powder or liquid) properly? So, just take the shake w/ dextrose pre-wk out, and no whey or dextrose after? Then after workout have some real food? Hope these aren't dumb questions, but never did this before and i was told if ya don't ask the ques. then that's stupid.
Oh, should i go to a Vitamin Shoppe & get it there to try out, or where should i get it? Don't want to spend alot of money on sugar!
Oh, and can i add creatine to the whey w/ the dextrose or should i take the creatine separate from them? Or does it not matter?
Thanks again!

"The only stupid question is the one unasked" , or my favorite, "he who asks a question is a fool for a moment, but he who does not is a fool for life" :)

But on to the issue on hand. You would measure your dextrose just like protein powder. It goes by scoop size ususally. My dextrose is 50grams for a 1/3 cup serving. SO yes you would take it 30-45 min before your workout with weights and cardio (lift hard ;) ). You willl then have a post workout meal when you feel hungry. It may take about 1 hour after your workout for the hunger to kick in. Concetrate on having a high protein/ medium carb meal from real food.

This is a personal issue with where you get your supplements, I get all my stuff from: http://www.proteinfactory.com I order their penta protein, so if you browse the site you can read up on it and see how it's a superior protein to anything you use now and the price is more then right. You can also order pure dextrose from them as well, it's not expensive. $10.00 of Dextrose lasts me months.

Thanks Gregory. I enjoyed the quote too. Do you know who said that? I think i will start out w/ 25g. of dextrose so how much should i take, 1/2cp. or 1/4cp. of dextrose? I want to start out w/ just a small amount but the measuring part throws me off. Oh, can i mix my creatine together w/ the whey and dextrose?
Thanks, annie
