Dextrose in your shakes??

Dex makes me feel like complete shit........I have been going with a whole food meal 24 hours nutrition and love it!

It's good to get a meal about an hour after your pw shake. I get a crash about 30-60 minutes after my pw shake with dextrose.

If you feel that you are crashing after your PWO shake, you can throw 20-25 g of oatmeal in it and that will prevent you from crashing. I have tried it both ways and it seems to help.. That way you are getting your dextrose carbs instantly and slowly releasing the carbs in the oatmeal. It will cover you for a good 1.5 - 2 hours when its time for your second post workout meal..

I go oats and whey...within 20 minutes of training.....then a meal 45 mins later and my prebed snack an hour after that..........

Any carbohydrate will replenish glycogen stores after a workout. The reason BBers often use dextrose in their post-workout shake is because it will cause a spike in blood sugar that will trigger an insulin spike in reponse. The insulin spike will cause your body to add mass. It's quite a bit safer than injecting insulin.

The reason you use dextrose is that dextrose is pure glucose and will very quickly metabolize and raise blood sugar. The fructose in many other forms of sugar (table sugar and high fructose corn sweetner) prevents it from metabolizing quickly enough to cause the insulin spike.

The cheapest source of dextrose is beer brewers corn sugar. Buy it at a brewing supply store online or locally.
excellent post.

I love this combination, use it quite a bit myself. It's like a sweet protein shake, with a little bite to it.

how much dextrose do you put in to the pwo shake??
i have always just eaten something with some carbs along with the shake, such as oatmeal.

30-40 really isnt enough to spike insulin. it is widely believed you need about 60g to spike insulin.
i use 50-60g whey protein and then double that for carbs (100-130g carbs) when i am bulking.
i use about 1/2 cup of maltodextrin and 1/3 cup dextrose.
maltodextrin is actually faster acting than dex but has a bitter taste to it. technically it is also a 'complex carb' (malto is) because it is 8 sugar molecules as opposed to dextrose being 2 sugar molecules.
when i run out of malto....i use about 1/2 cup of dextrose.
id recommend 60-100g of fast acting carbs post workout and another good meal with NO FAT in it about an hour later.

This is a great thread. I've used Dextrose up until now. 20g of protein and about 100g of carbs for pre and post workout.
What do people take for preworkout? I'm wondering if I'm not taking the best ratio or carb source before hand.
