Depression after running-

I really dont know if its just a girl thing-- but after my harder days (like 5 miles @ 7 minute pace), I cool down, do some stretching (10 minutes)...& by the time I get to my car Im in tears :(

its pretty weird...like a post-cardio meltdown-- any suggestions (please dont suggest give up running-- I feel great during the exericse- its only afterwards like an endorphin withdrawal).

thanks :)

I usually feel happier after I've run, but I'm beat for the rest of the day (i usually run 3x a week 45-60 minutes-jogging). Anyone else feel completely tired (especially my legs) for the rest of the day after running first thing in the morning? Do u think I'm running too much at a time or maybe lacking something in my diet?

I'm usually bouncing off the walls after my morning run. Only time I'm tired after working out is after a very heavy lift. That's one of the main reasons I do cardio in the morning and lift later in the day; if I do cardio at night I won't sleep.

Low blood sugar? Just a though...

Yeah, I'm thinking hypoglycemia too, coupled with a beta-endorphin crash. Maybe you're doing too much cardio too frequently.

I would definately cry at that pace...but for different reasons....you wouldn't feel that way from low blood sugar, I think it may be how you are interpreting your endorphin rush. Are you using ephedra and when exactly and for how long does this occur?

low blood sugar maybe?

[edited; just noticed that b-fold suggested the same thing].

I used to get this in martial arts tournaments. You get real hyped up for your first fight, massive adrenaline rush, then you crash afterwards, you can end up bursting into tears even if you won.... try eating a banana or two before running maybe?

Running (or most any cardio) makes me feel high and zippy all day. I only do it 4x/week though. I get sort of depressed on my rest days, mainly because I'm missing that rush from cardio/training. I figure it's the price I gotta pay for good training days though.

Try a carb drink (Gatorade) before your run. Might want to take some 5-HTP or L-Tryptophan just before or right after (during cool down) the run so it is in the system after the run along with more Gatorade. Could be running low on brain serotonin. I can think of a couple of mechanisms.

Try the CHO drink first, then 5-HPT or L-Tryptophan with carbs after.

Wish I could find cheap L-tryptophan powder.

You may want to give inositol a try as well.

Is there anything going on in your life that is depressing you in general?

Sounds a lot like low blood sugar, hypoglycemia.

I do my cardio in the early evening around 6 PM (no time in the AM) and need a snack around 3 or 4 or I end up the same way.

Even had a full fledged anxiety attack in the middle, once, because I missed my 4 PM feeding.

Have had reactive hypoglycemia since at LEAST 1998 - so I'm pretty aware of it.

Im gonna try L-tryptophan & Gatorade...I usually dont drink anything before a run cause it slows me down-- but after only water.

Anyway-- Thanks All!!!

The Gatorade won't slow you down if you drink around 300 ml. Drink it about 1/2 hour out, but not much longer. The 5-HTP or L-Tryptophan you'll have to play with. With a short run, it may not hit you until after your run, but you may have to go with a post run hit.

Start with the Gatorade first. Remember, too far out from your run and your insulin will spike and when combined with the run, will really drop your blood sugar. Time it close to the run, and carry some with you to sip on if necessary and also right after.

I am training for my 4th Marathon & every long run, and every previous Marathon, at about 18 miles, I get really depressed! I can feel a lump forming in my throat & I want to sit down & cry........what's up with this?

Do you think it is low seratonin?

I used to take Zoloft for depression, but haven't used it in years, so this could really be what the problem is.

I would like to treat it with the supplements because when I tool the Zoloft, I couldn't run at all!! I didn't have the "power" to push past a few miles.
