Deads or SLDL??

tzan

New member
I'm playing around with my back routine a little. Right now it looks like this:

4x8-1 deads
4x8-4 row(2 sets widegrip, 2 sets closer grip)
4x10 widegrip pulldowns

I'm thinking about substituting deads with SLDL. I really want to focus on building up strength in my lower back, and I feel that deads incorporate my legs more. In regards to JUST your BACK, which of the two would you say would be more beneficial??

I would substitute GMs for deads- not stiffys.

You say that as if they're especially different. The bar is either on your back or in your hands--that's about it. I'd rather keep working on my grip strength and do stiff-legged/romanian deads.

Regular deads, no contest. They do incorporate your legs, that's true, but no more than SLDLs will. They just hit the hams more than the quads. I think of SLDLs as a ham/butt excercise first, lower back second.

I'll second that.

As far as Good-mornings replacing SLDL's, Id say fine if we were talking Hamstring workout, but not for Back. Both hit the Hamstrings primarily. For BACK, you should just stick with regular Deads, and do the SLDL's or GMs for your hammies.

Bottom line bro: there really isn't any replacing regular deads for your Back routine. My opinion.

True, for back it's deadlift. For legs/gluts it's sldl. But sldl's do hit the back, and deadlift's do hit the hams/gluts. So you can't really go wrong if you pick either one, but I think deadlifts in your case would be more beneficial to back. Maybe alternate every 4 weeks or something like that?

So you guys don't think that a person should be doing deads on backday and then SLDL's on leg day?

I do

Cuthbert is on the money though with alternating though, I am cycling between deadlifting and powercleans
