deadlifts suck!!!

Ok i was joking about the deadlifts sucking first time i did them in 2 years was monday and man is it a workout. Today i tryed doing them and i couldent hold on to the bar very well and it slipped a bit and it felt like i was holding on to a cheese grater with 200 lbs. attached to it. My hands are very callased already but it still made my hands bleed some and hurt very bad so it pretty much ruined my whole workout today i couldent do anything after that. I was wonderin how long it takes to get used to them and anything anyone can suggest for the time being?

1st off- i wouldnt deadlift 2xwk...cycle them w/bentover rows. 2ndly- bleeding hands and hurting are part of deadlifting..lol. not to be mean- but suck it up- youll get used to it:)

Deadlifts are the single-most important, and greatest workout possible. Ive been working out for 3 years now, and I have no problem with my grip at all. When I started off my hands were feeble and of course having the smooth hands cant help. They get callused pretty quick once you start doing bare hands. Keep doing them, with proper form and youll be alright.

i feel bad that a chic just told me that but oh well and yeah i got pretty big calluses and it split a couple of them in half and thats where the blood came from

LMAO :lmao:

What grip were you using? Straight overhand grip is good for developing your grip strength, but when that starts to fail, you could try switching to hook or mixed grip. Get some chalk too.

yeah i was using overhand ill try a mixed grip next time as for hook if it is the one where u put ur thumbs inside ur other fingers i think my hands are to small im not to sure so ill give them both a try thanks and how long did it take ur hands to get used to it anotherbutters? I figured mine already would be like 1/5 of my hands are callused but i actually think thats why it was so bad.

My left hand fingers still aren't used to it. The skin folds in the middle of the finger before the first joint. Calluses form, but always fall off the day before I'm ready to deadlift again  No calluses on my right hand.

You're correct on hook grip. I tried it with some success for the first time today actually. Key point for me was to get my middle finger over my thumb nail. It puts a lot of pressure on the thumb though, so it's good to build up their use. Stupidly, I did my max weight with hook grip today and my thumbs are killing me now :)

Mixed grip is good because with straight grip, the bar rotates down your fingers. With mixed grip, your hands point in opposite directions so they counter each other and the bar doesn't rotate. It makes a lot of difference.

Your existing calluses might be in the wrong place if they haven't been caused by holding a bar as you do in a deadlift.

alright thought i was right and yeah im pretty sure thats why i split both the ones at the bottom of my index fingers and thats wierd cuz the calluses on my left hand are twice as big as the ones on my right thought it was just me wonder y that is?

Sorry to butt in and for the bragging that is about to come but I just wanted to tell someone. I stared DL'ing again after stopping for almost a full year. First day back into doing them I hit 405 for two reps! I was shocked, before my workout I was saying to myself if I can work up to 275 for a couple reps that would be good. But when I began my workout each lift was so easy, so I just kept on adding.

About this thread. I found out that when I used alternate grip I always kept the same posistion, left hand palms out and right hand palms in. That grip has caused my left trap to have over developed compared to my right trap. Try it yourself. Put your hands in the alternate grip posistion and look into a mirror. The trap on the side where your palm faces out rolls up in a flexed posistion. So now I alternate every set with which hand is palms out or in.

I just use a hook grip. Mixed grip can put unnecessary torque on the spine if you're not careful, as well as hinder symmetrical development. 'course people do it without having huge issues, so I'm sure that it's not the end of the world, but I just prefer my double pronated hook grip.
