Deadlifts and lats

What do deads build more, your lat width or thickness? Do they build more your lower lats or upper lats?

I'm doing 4x5 increasing the weight each set.

Deads don't build lats.

They should work on erectors, and traps to some extent

But keep in mind, deads are NOT a back exercise!! It's a hip exercise that has some people confused because the weight is held in the hands, thus staticly involving some parts of the back to secure the weight.

For lats you want pullups, pulldowns, and also rows

Deadlifts are a great exercise, I would definitely keep them in your routine as they work an enormous amount of muscles.

They will give you more thickness than anything, and are the absolute best exercise for traps and the spinal erectors. Very few people can build an impressive set of traps without a deadlift of some sort in their routine.

You will notice some lat involvement, but they shouldn't really be considered a lat exercise, the function of the lats is to bring the elbows to the side of the body, so you will want to work on horizontal and vertical pulling motions as casualbb said...

Personally, I got no measurable middle or upper back growth from doing deadlifts. Even after bringing up my deadlift from 365 to 505. My waist increased and traps may have gotten a little extra thickness but that was about it.

for "me" deads has given me a mighty thick back..i believe you cannot build thickness without them..just my .02

How much weight can any of you do with deadlifting?

weight is relative..im in the process of changing my routine around to more of a wsb..so i wont be deadlifting as much..mostly the occasional speed work maybe a max rack pull..my goal is 600..i ahvent pulled heavy in awhile do to some back problems but ive only got about 70 lbs to go to get there.. ;)

lower back and spine erectors and traps and the main back targets for deads. lats might get a little hit depending on stance.

I have never deadlifted consistently and my thickness is pretty decent. I am starting to work them in now though.
