Deadlift Technique

I am maxing out on my deadlifts at 405, but I started to become concerned today that I am using too much of my back and too little of my legs during the lift.

I know that when I first began deadlifting about a year ago, it seemed that my quads were the driving force during the ascent, and about halfway through my back would dominate the remainder of the pull. However, it now seems that right the beginning that my back is pulling the majority of the weight with very little drive from my legs.

Is this common (unavoidable) as the weight gets heavier, or is it more likely that I've allowed my form to get sloppy as the weights have gotten heavier? I definitely don't want to get taken out of the gym on stretcher because I blew out my lower back!

When I do very heavy working sets of deadlifts, I imagine pushing my feet through the ground as I lift. It helps take the back out of the lift.

A lot of it is that with higher weight you are having involvement from all your muscles. So you are feeling more stress in the rest of your body. Just work on using the best form you can and not trying to do more weight than you can do correctly.

Cheers,
Scotsman
