I noticed you lean your knees in when you come up, does this activate you hips more?

I noticed you lean your knees in when you come up, does this activate you hips more?

nope... thats bad and i need to stop it, its actually the opposite, my hips are weak right now cause i havent been sumo deadlifting. Knees coming in on a squat like that robs you of a lot of power out of the hole. Pay attention in like two/three weeks ill get more squat vids up and my knees wont be drifting in anymore.

Hmm, good to know. I gotta meet up and train DL and Squat with you once my knee heals up because i think im at the point now where little technique changes will help me with my weak areas which you could probably spot easier then i could.

you got it BK

when did you hurt your knee what happened

Hmm has to be close to like 3-4 weeks now but i was going for a new max on squats with 570lbs, got it. Knee felt a little tender under the knee cap but i had that happen before so i wrote it off. Went over on the leg press and wrapped my knees up again and was doing like 1200lbs for reps then after my last set when i got up i couldnt put any pressure on that leg and when i went to bend it i would just collapse and the leg would give out. I looked online and its the patellar tendon where it connects to the shin bone. I've had this happen before but never to this extend, usually after a week i was good to go again but not this time. fuckin sucks.

Funny thing was it didnt hurt throughout the whole lift and even after it wasnt that bad, i think i just tore it slightly then made it much worse by doing leg press after i already fucked it up.

You switch back to sumo deads?

Grip gave out on rack pulls today. Terribly frustrating as the rest of my body coulda pulled more. 1st time its become an issue. I guess its time for some plate pinches

yeah, im about four weeks out now so i need to get the hips up to speed. Yeah its infuriating isnt it?? I would get some grip tools along with plate pinches. Ive been using Tyler Grips for a while now and they help, check them out.. TYLERGRIP - A Revolution in Strength Training

i use all titan gear now, the new super centurion is fantastic. after this next meet im going to get professionally fitted for all my gear. new super katana, new centurion and they have a new deadlifter out too that is supposed to be great. yeah the bruises and friction burns look like hell for days, i still get them pretty bad in my loose training suits. s&m lol my gf is still like wtf when she sees me after a squat workout.

THe powerlifting classifications that you posted earlier...those are for using equipment. Are there any measures for those who lift raw?

btw...the gym you use looks awesome. Tons of equipment and always empty. What time of day are you in there?

Ill start video taping again soon so you guys will get to see what im talking about and let me tell you, some of you are going to be veeery jealous lol.

Good lifts. I like your use of the bands. They should be in every persons training. Very underrated or under utilized.

whats up brothers! thanks for the kind words and the warm welcome back. ya so i really havent done much lifting in the last 3 months, i was going to the gym but mostly workin out the jaw muscles lol. Like i said in my last log post ive squatted two or three times and deadlifted maybe four times in the last 3-4 months. Im ready and back for good now though. I am pleasantly surprised about how strong my lifts still feel. Seems to be sticking with me better as i get a little older now were as I would completely lose my strength gains a couple years ago. Ive got a definite full meet lined up in the end of august and i am going to go double ply i think. Shooting for some big numbers so im not fckin around anymore. Thanks again fellas. I will have vids going again soon for sure, got alot more options now with the way i can setup bands and what not so i can really start doing some cool shit.

i noticed with the 3 board press, you basically push as soon as it touches... and in competiton a slight pause/complete stop is required...
i am trying to get my weak ass bench up for competition as it is holding me back... when i do board presses should i do them like you do?.... is it useless to pause at that point because in full rom you wont pause at that point???
...also do you compete at 198?... im assuming you cut just a bit?...

I love that EliteFTS rack. Is that a Forza comp bench or an Elite? Very sick gym set up.

no there is a pause there. no need to sit there for 2 seconds. bring it down to the board, pause, explode. i do 198 and 220 yes, ive competed from 195-216lbs in the last couple years. i will prob go 198 for the next couple meets i do i dont really feel like eating all day long and spending tons of cash on food right now lol

fckin sick right! im so pumped i cant wait to get to the gym every day lol. ya the bench is an elitefts piece as well, you cant really see in the videos but it has built in band pegs too just like the rack

Dave how come you use such a narrow stance when squatting? or do you only use a stance like that when box squatting?

That gym looks friggin sick too

for those wondering tyler grips are basically thick silicon tubes you can put on the handle of dumbells, barbells, or really anything that size. they are about 2-2.5" in diameter so it makes just about anything you train with a fat bar, great for forearm and grip training.

Hey welcome back Dave! Actually I was wondering about the tyler grips and was thinking it could only be something like that.

The gym where I workout does have those steps you used for the deficit deads and I was thinking about using it, now that I have seen you do it I will definitely do so. Too bad they don't have a fucking power rack, just some nasty shit. One of these days I'm gonna break just so they put a better one. I'm the only who those deads and squats there anyway...

thanks man its good to be back. the steps arent really ideal, they compress a bit under the weight but they will do. sucks not having a power rack man, thats a necessity for us. complain, maybe theyll hook you up.

nice workout. was the 495x3 a 3 board?

Sick lockouts. Were they the same height as last week? 130 pound jump! incredible

Yes i took the 495 to a 3 board. Lockouts are a crazy thing man. If you really want to see what the human CNS is all about, do rack lockouts! I had not done any for months before last week so i havent handled any big weights in a while. So last week 545x2 FELT extremely heavy. I have done nearly 800 before when deep in a heavy training cycle IIRC. Even though I havent done them in months 545 is clearly not heavy for my body. It is just a shock and feels incredibly heavy when the CNS is not used to this kind of weight. I probably could have done 15 tonight with 545, if not more, just from introducing that weight to my body last monday. The human body really is an amazing machine. I really believe CNS training is just as important as strengthening the muscles when the ultimate goal is to lift maximal weights. Hence all the rack lockouts in my programs

yeah u got that right, my whole body is smoked today. thanks man im tryin to get back on track my body really needed a break obviously im responding to the heavy lifting really well. the way it looks now i have a good chance at hitting my goals at my next meet in august. i want to get down to 6-7%bf and stay around 205-210 and cut weight to make the 198's. i want 850/550/750

How do you cut/rehydrate?

I trained with some guys briefly who would cut with lasix and then use IVs to rehydrate. They lifted in APF/WPO so 24 hour weigh ins. Crazy shit.

goin to leave to weigh in right now.. somewhere between 198-199 right now. going to check out their scale and hopefully its light (or mine is heavy) if not ill sit in my car with the heat on and sweat a bit more

this time i used an otc diuretic called Xpel from MHP. did a bunch of hot water baths and made a sauna out of my bathroom. i wouldnt fuck with lasix/IV unless i was going to a big money competition and had to cut like 20+lbs to make weight.

to rehydrate im just going to pound water/gatorade up until the meet and eat a ton of food. prob like 3-4gallons of fluid total

One of the guys was actually a DR. Big fucking meathead PLer Doctor....Go figure. The first time I trained with them i almost shit my pants pulling up to his house. Sweet pad.

God luck with weigh ins and the comp bro.

Nice bro! I heard good words about MHP's Xpel from some MMA friends, they said it's the legal shit for dropping weight before comp.

Good luck!

I used that stuff back in the winter, take 2x what it tells you to though. Worked pretty good.

well i made it.. BARELY but i made it

weigh ins from 6 to 7pm, so i arrived at 6 and weighed in right away. I was 199, need to get to 198.25. I brought sweats and extra clothes just incase. So i put on three layers of clothes and jumped in my car with the heat blasting at 91*, seat heater on, and sat for 45mins. It took me about 25mins just to start sweating, i dont think i had much fluid left lol. Went back in and stepped back on the scale, 198.25 on the nose. I felt awesome when i first got to the gym, but that 45mins in my car just to sweat out 3/4 of a pound reeally killed me. i feel like dog shit now and i will be blown away if i move any decent weight tomorrow.

thanks guys ill update this tomorrow, back to eating and guzzling fluids...

Hmm I see... The fluids you guys lost were mostly subcutaneous or from the muscles? I wanna try this for an important beach party, but don't want my muscles to look too flat... :supercool

Well i didnt have a great day saturday. I got my weight back up to around 210, felt very strong. Opened with 475 on bench and smoked it. Went to 500 and got that too pretty easily. 525 next and i jumped the press call so no lift. Opened with 640 on deadlift. Setup perfect, started my pull and right above my knees i completely lose my balance forward and put it down. This meet was in a gym inside a really old industrial building, one of those big old brick mills. The floor was literally sagging under the weight lol. Everyone was having the same problem, it was just amplified on my attempts because of the weight. So i figured id try and setup better and be ready for it, and the 640 FLEW off the floor for me so i went 670. Same thing, got it to my knees and lose my balance. I NEVER lose my balance forward when im pulling. At this point im pretty fired up and everyone is pulling for me. Stayed at 670 to get the lift in, i really wanted to get 700 @ 198, i nearly got 710 3 weeks ago in the gym. Heres a video of my last one

670 remix by i3ossman - Photobucket

everyone was flipping out, i was pumped cause i got it, threw my hands up in victory lol

The side judges gave me red lights! they said it wasnt fully locked out???? looks pretty good to me fuckers. so not only did i bomb out on deads and not get a total, but my back is destroyed right now cause i was fighting the weight as well as trying to keep my balance. oh well, next time... needless to say i am not going back to that venue ever again. im not one for excuses but when the fucking floor gives way to any kind of decent weight what the hell am i supposed to do?

it was just a bench/deadlift comp, no squats. jumping the call was my fault im not annoyed just a dumb mistake. but ya, the floor issue was really stupid. i told the meet director if you cant find a decent place to hold the meet dont have it.

Bummer man, but your concerns are valid.

An inadequate floor is very dangerous. Differential settling is bad news. Structural engineering requires a good footing and your skeleton is no different. I went to a weightlifting fund raiser when I was a kid and the guys were powerlifting up on a stage in a school cafeteria. You know the kind, elevated wooden platforms with wood skeleton. Anyway, the floor gave way on a 600-700 lb deadlift and this poor guy blew out both his knees. Hyperextended em both when the load fell. So I would say its a valid concern.

i cant view the video of your dead because of the web browser i use ....but did you not get a 'down' command in the deadlift??? if you got a down command, your shoulders should be locked for them to say it... if they didnt say the command then i could see how it could be an invalid attempt... or the fed may not use that command ...in that case i should stfu...
nice pull though, at the meets ive done, you'd be best lifter with 670@198....

Fuck bro that sucks, i would never compete under those circunstances again either and thinking you had to put up with all that weigh-in qualification methods...

yeah this was seriously in the back of my mind lol. if i knew they were going to red light me on my last attempt i would have just dropped it from lockout to see how many floors we could go through

yeah i was locked out, got the down command. the head judge gave me a white light he said it was a good lift after, he didnt know why the side judges gave me reds. thanks though.. ive gotten 705@207, i just really want 700+ at 198 its a goal of mine right now

Dave,

Been skimming over your log.. I assume you train alone, but not always? Where do you suggest someone who lifts alone starts in regards to power lifting? I like the 3 days routine and the simplicity of your routine.. I just cant seem to see myself breaking any plateau's without a spotter.. My girl will not oblige.

i do not train alone, we help each other out and the way we train we HAVE to have a couple guys. if you cant get a training partner just do the majority of your heavy lifting in a power rack with safety pins.
