Dangers of 5-htp

after reading some posts about it, i bought a bottle. the valerian root didn't do much but i really like this 5-htp. it really relaxes me and it has made today go really smooth! my anxiety is MUCH better!!!!! but.. what happens when u stop taking the 5-htp??? do u need to slowly come off?
 
come on guys, i know im not the only one with anxiety that has used 5-htp. this stuff is like a miracle for me, if i keep taking it i need to know if theres gonna be some withdrawals if i ever stop.... i can't find it in the search.. someone said u can have problems, someone else said u wouldn't.
 
LOL. I used that shit after rolling (southern for taking exctacy). It restores your seritonin levels back to normal, as MDMA suppresses them in the long-term. It seems you may have abnormally low seritonin levels if 5-htp it effects you when your sober. If you didn't know, the more seritonin you have, the happier and more relaxed you are. This is what exctacy does; makes your levels skyrocket. But of course, what goes up, must come down. And down does it go! Glad to see it's helping you out though.

As for your question, I wouldn't worry too much about it. If it's working, that's great. Your body may develope a tolerance, in which case you should stop taking it, but if not, I don't see why you should stop taking it if it has such a positive effect on you. Then again, people have changed their mindset just by temporary administrations of medications. In other words, the 5-htp is showing you how you COULD be...your mind is adjusting its perspective...thus, when you come off of it, you will be better off than you were before you started it. Make sense? Good. :D
 
thanks man.. does anyone know how much is too much? someone said not to take more then 75mg/day.. but even on the back of my bottle it says take 1-4 caps a day and these are 50mg caps.. 1 makes me feel relaxed, but 2 makes me feel really good and makes it easy to fall asleep. i just don't wana be using too much.

Don't take it EVERYDAY! Take it when you really need it. Take it 3 times a week Max, for it to be in FULL GEAR everytime you use it.
 
I use to use it when I dabbled with ecstasy too, and to be honest it doesn't make me sleep better it makes me wake up more often throughout the night.

No. You are wrong. 5HTP is one step further toward serotonin than l-trypyophan (tryptophan converts to 5HTP converts to Tryptamine (serotonin)..... 5HTP is by far the better choice. Besides, L-tryp was taken off the market by the FDA.... at the same time as Prozac was released.. and for no real reason... (a contaminated batch). United States policy is to try and stop any supplement that may harm pharmaceutical sales from staying on the market....... (I have the papers that state this).
 
you can buy 5-htp just about at any health food store with a wide variety of supps...

I take it everyday, and when I run out of a bottle and don't get a chance not to get one right away, it doesnt' hurt me one bit... I like to roll, and it keeps me even pretty much all the time.

They have it at Walmart, it's no miracle drug tho... I used to take some before and after doing E, but I really wouldn't expect too much out of it. Think of it this way, 5htp is to anti depressants what prohormones are to juice.

Wrong!! For fucks sake.. again we have people stating opinion as fact. 5HTP can be every bit as effective as anti-deps. As can inositol and even St. John's wort.

Oh really? there are vitamins in food..does this mean if you eat alot of food then you can develope a tolerance to vitamins?

suspension- that may be true for you, but everyone seems to react differently to these kind of things. Paxil fucked me up and did nothing good for me. I am a bit unlucky though, because inositol didnt do shit for me either. The only thing that I can feel at all is valerian root, and it doesnt help much. I am going to try 5htp next, and if that doesnt work, then I dont know what to do. Any suggestions Gary?

Is your diet bad? I don't have any other suggestions. Inositol works in many people, as does kava kava, St. Johns Wort and 5HTP.

What is your problem? Depression or anxiety or both?

Cognitive behavoural therapy specialized for ur condition, *supplmented* with meds/herbs/vitamens, assuming ur condition is primarly enviromentally induced.

Alot of anxiety is caused by enviromental stressors. people with a predisposition to anxiety, can and do experience a cessation in anxiety symptoms with specialized CBT.

Just trying to stear u away from the quick fix. Im doing CBT for social anxiety, a very strong and pervasive, anxiety and depression associated with being around people. Lucky me! :) But its getting better. Im going to look into Inositol, but its the CBT that actually changes the brains neuronal pathways, and enables ur body to *learn* how to be relaxed, permanently. The drugs just help u along the way.
 
so is CBT like classical conditioning through interactive therapy or something? If so, I believe it can help. But you also gotta remember that these conditions are often a direct result of years of conditioning in actual reality. Repetition is the key for cognitive rehabilitation.
