Criminal Record/Employment Question

Atomic Punk

New member
If a person has a criminal record of 2 misdemeanor drug charges, is that person ineligible to aquire future employment in ANY Law-oriented field? Such as a Lawyer, Cop, etc. Thanks

for many police departments it depends on how much time has passed. they will consider the convictions, but they are not determinative. for law school and bar admission, as long as you are open about the convictions it probably won't matter. students have been admitted with felony records. just DON'T try to conceal any convictions and you should be ok.

Misdemeanors will not disqualify you. A felony would.

When did these occurs? It is possible that they are sealed if your a youthfull offender, etc..

It will not matter for a lawyer but to be a police officer they give you a lie detectors test, they ask how long its been since you did any drugs.A friend of mine is a police officer, he went thru that shit.

The actual arrests both happened in 1997, but the last one wasn't processed through court totally(meaning I served my sentence)until 2001. To qualify for Student Loans, you have to have either completed a drug program, or wait 2 years, or both. Either way I have done both, so it won't matter. Anyway, this is why I'm asking. I have an Associate Degree in CRJ, and am thinking about trying to get into Law School, after I complete my Bachelors, as I am now again eligible for Student Loans & Grants. And YES, you can have murdered, raped, child molested, and they wouldn't disqualify you for these loans. ONLY for drug offenses do they do this. Crazy huh? I was looking at an article about resumes, and it said that when dealing with a criminal record, it kinda depends on what field you want to go into. For example, if you have a history of writing bad checks, I doubt any banker would hire you. I kind of took that as a bad sign as far as being a cop, since the majority of their arrests have to deal with drugs, and those are my convictions. I dunno.

you could always inquire about it over the phone. I dont know who you have to contact about becoming a cop, but im sure you do. Call with a bunch of different questions, not only your one about the misdemeanors, like is there a specific time and date for the test? Where is the test administered? Who can qualify? Do you need a college degree? Stuff like that.

Good luck
