Coughing at night

Every few years lately, just as all other symptoms of a cold/flue are going away I develope a chronic cough in the evening. I am constantly awakened for about 3 hours after going to bed by the urge to cough. It usually starts with a tickle in the throat and many times I wake up from sound sleep with a violent cough. During the daytime, I am fine and seldom cough at all. I have tried and/or currently doing the following:
1. Sleeping upright in a reclining chair(not reclined).
2. Taking Nyquil (including up to double the recommended dose)
3. Using Cough Syrup with Codeine(prescribed by doc.)
4. Herbal Teas with Sliperry Elm Bark (supposed to supress cough reflex)
5. Cough drops (all types)
6. OTC sleeping pills
7. 3-4 shots of brandy
8. Drinking 1 gallon of water per day.

None of these has worked thus far, my doctor said that I need to wait it out. It usually last about 2 weeks I am curious if anyone here has had this problem and what you did to take care of it.

out of curiousity, does the coughing bout end with a final upbringing of sputum/phelgm from the chest?

My mom has a remedy that really works. It's nasty though. Mix in equal parts: apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, and honey. It's not a miracle cure, and you smell like vinegar for a bit, but it works surprisingly well without making you tired or wired. (You could add brandy and hot water to help you sleep.)

i ahd a post nasal drip once that cause the same sysmptoms you could try some sort of nose spray before bed and see what happens

At this point I will try anything. Do you gargle with this or drink it?

Have you tried Delsym? It's a long acting form of Dextromethorphan Hbr that kicks ass. There is also a new product out there called Mucinex DM. It kicks ass, it also has time-release DXM in it.

Rock on

Drink it. And zi guess you have to add about a shot of whiskey. Take it before bed.

I'm not being a smart-ass or anything, but i have similar problems, but washing your bed sheets and pillow cases will help. there are so many organisms that grow in your pillows and pillow cases. bacteria and the like can affect your breathing and irratate your bronchials. i'm mean washing them at least once a week or more.
