Every few years lately, just as all other symptoms of a cold/flue are going away I develope a chronic cough in the evening. I am constantly awakened for about 3 hours after going to bed by the urge to cough. It usually starts with a tickle in the throat and many times I wake up from sound sleep with a violent cough. During the daytime, I am fine and seldom cough at all. I have tried and/or currently doing the following:
1. Sleeping upright in a reclining chair(not reclined).
2. Taking Nyquil (including up to double the recommended dose)
3. Using Cough Syrup with Codeine(prescribed by doc.)
4. Herbal Teas with Sliperry Elm Bark (supposed to supress cough reflex)
5. Cough drops (all types)
6. OTC sleeping pills
7. 3-4 shots of brandy
8. Drinking 1 gallon of water per day.
None of these has worked thus far, my doctor said that I need to wait it out. It usually last about 2 weeks I am curious if anyone here has had this problem and what you did to take care of it.
