Computer people...jnuts, dial tone, etc.....

Thanks and I will bump this if I have progress on it.

This is one of those things that can probably be found in 2 mins by a geek on site. It's a painful learning experience for those who are (ahem) less adept at moving their way around computers. You'll be better for it after it's fixed :)

Fix up your house, fix up your computers :)

It is XP and the kids have their own log on names and passwords. WOuld I have to run spybot on each name account?

I've never used spybot, but in Adware, it is the reason why I change the deafult settings t oscan entire drive. Does spybot have similar settings.

First, do not download the drivers off the cd that came with it.

Second, go to your C:Program Files and erase file "Router" if you did.

Third, unplug modem and router and then let them power up and connect.

Fourth, let XP find all the connections automatically. The drivers on the CD
can interfere with this.

Fifth, go to linksys.com and download the newest flashwear for that model router which has some AOL fixes I believe.

If you are lazy, you might try the flashwear upgrade first. It might solve the problem by itself.

Problem with wireless is that anybody can use it. You can buy a device for $30 and walk around the neighborhood. A green light will turn on when somebody is wireless. With some equipment, you can use their internet.

This is a serious possibility bro.

You've got to wrap that rascal. Turn on WEP and change default settings. If you make it hard, your less savory types will move on to easier pastures..

Yep, turn on WEP, change the SSID and use encryption. Not bullet proof, but good enough in most cases

BTW
not to change the subject, but anyone know of any info on hacking the wireless hot spots at Starbucks and Borders?

Just use the standard script kiddie tools. Download 'em and give it a shot.

I am scanning the computer right now for a trojan through sygate. Don't know why it is letting me do it now since it wouldn't load last night. Will let you know how it turns out as soon as I know something. It said something like 20 minutes for the scan but will probably take longer.

Damn I hate computers!

I scanned that computer and disabled the firewall and disabled the norton anti-virus protect. It is still saying that my computer was blocking their probes.

Since that computer is wireless and my computer is hooked through the same router would I have to disable all of my stuff(firewall, anit-virus,etc.) on my good computer for it to scan the ports? I hate this shit...who said being stupid is not tough.

My DSL status says mine is running at 100.0mps. Their connection is running at 11.0mps and the router signal strength says it is real strong. I tried to check their conncetion through dslreports.com but cannot seem to complete their testing. I've waited as much 30 minutes for their testing to finish but it had not so I clicked off of it.

Hmmm....

Your computer is working fine, but their computer is not.

Is the only thing not working good on their computer the internet access? Is everything else snappy when it tries to run?
