Computer gone awry. Help please.

For the past 3 months or so my computer makes a funny noise. Not from the speakers, but inside the actual comp. It's hard to describe but it has a definite pattern and sounds something like a scratching noise.

Yesterday I tried signing on AOL and it froze up and started to make the noise. I pressed Ctrl, Alt, Dlt and it said something like tamisirv (not responding) I have no idea what program that is.

I ran a virus program to see if that was the prob and once it came to C:\Windows\System\(some file) it started making the noise again.

Also, sometimes in the middle of the night the computer will go on standby mode without me prompting it to and it wont wake up when I move the mouse.

This is really bugging me. I'm willing to format my hard drive and do a clean install but I can't figure out how to boot the comp in MS-Dos mode.

Can someone give me some pointers? I'm clueless.

mine acts like that once in a while...i usally unplug it and restart it back up!! good luck! RADAR

The only mechanical parts to your PC are the hard disk drive and the fan(s). If the sound comes and goes, it's probably the fan going out, but it could be the hard drive, which is not good.

If you are wanting to reload your PC, you can get a boot disk at the following site.

www.bootdisk.com

Keep in mind, if you format without backing up your data, you lose it all.

lol, unplug it? why not just restart it? I tried that though, doesn't work for me. It's frustrating.

If you know the make of your harddrive then go to their website and look for a hd diagnostic tool. This should let you know if your hd is failing. Baring that it very well could be a fan thats crapping out causing your comp to overheat.

Once you figure out your problem it should be relatively easy to fix. Make sure you back up all important info asap in case it is a hd failing on you.

The fan makes a noise too. There's 2 separate noises, both very distinguishable. I cleaned the fan a while ago and it quit making the noise but now it's doing it again. (as well as the other noise)

I really don't care if I lose everything on here. It's mostly just mp3's and jenna jamison videos. did i just say that? [brain] i dont think so, just keep typing [/brain] OK. I guess I'll try reinstalling ME and if that doesn't work just format the damn thing with the boot disk. Thanks for hte help.

i ran a scan on the hard drive. thank god it's still under warranty cuz if computers had diseases this thing has the plague.

Ran a scandisk, that will tell you if your hard drive is having physical problems.

tried that. it got to 15% of checking the file allocation tables and the noise started up and it froze again.

Sounds like your HD is going out. Do you have a way to back up your data? cd burner?

If your PC or HD is under warranty I'd get it checked out ASAP. If the disk fails you won't be able to pull your data off of it.
