Colt .45 Shells

Ok so my dad gave me his dad's old .45 double action revolver, I went to get shells for it and bought colt 45 shells...turns out i needed acp shells cuz the colt 45's wouldn't fit in the revolver of course...so i have 50 damn bullets and the sports store won't return bullets for i wasted $$ on them...someon PM me with their ideas on what to do with these!!

Next time you go at the range, try to find someone shooting the same caliber and make him a deal.

yea i thought about that...mostly my guns are for protection at home, only pull out the straps when i hear footsteps you know, dont go to ranges much anymore...but I want to, maybe i will, yes I'll go to a range this weekend and slang my shells

Exactly what kind of bullets do you have? ACP stands for Automatic Centerfire Pistol. Your revolver is not automatic, so I don't see why you need ACP ammo for it. Just confused, that's all.

Hey,
Yea my gun does shoot acp rounds and its an old double action Colt 45...i bought these colt .45 shells thinking they'd shoot, but they are too big for the revolver. I am NOT a gun expert at all, i'm assuming the shells i bought are for current colt 45's which are automatic??? I went to a gun shop to get hte right rounds finally and they sold me the acp's I don't know, I DO know that I did get the right rounds for my DA COlt 45, they are ACP and this gun is strictly for protect. so i'm not gonna shoot it a whole lot unless you get too close :p

Is it a Smith & Wesson Model 3 by chance? Originally it was chambered for the .45 Shofield which is slightly shorter than a Colt .45. Look at the nomenclature on the barrel and let me know, I am curious to what exactly you have. Does it have a top break?
As far as getting rid of the ammo, find a range near you that shoots cowboy action competitions and you can probably get rid of it there.

Cool revolver, it is a Colt 1917. Originally manufactured in .45 ACP, you should be able to use .45 auto rim with it too. Was your grandpa in the military. That was a standard in the Army until the 1911 came out. Army issue should have Property United States stamped on the bottom of the barrel. I am trying to find a site to look up the serial number. Have fun shooting it.

You should be able to get rid of those .45 rifle cartridges. A lot of people shoot the .454 Casull these days and I think its the same brass.

i took it to a gunsmith a couple weeks ago and he and everyone there was in awe of it. I didn't really think much of it until then, i just wanted to buy some shells that would work for it. He gave me ACP.45 what does ACP mean anyway?? They weren't exactly cheap shells as i recall either.
I shot it last week and it was a blast :p . The thing carries a huge punch along with a loud ass bang. Double action too, I was bummed b/c i only had 25 shells to shoot and those were gone in the first 5 min. :) I didn't realize the gun was that old. My grandpa was in the military but thought it was the Navy, plus he'd have been serving in the 30's and 40's...i'll double check on that..Let me know if you come up with some cool stuff in your research of it!

You should be able to find some old military loads. Israelis made a bunch of surplus .45ACP ammo. Not a very accurate round but fun to shoot.

Bulk ACP = bulk Auto center fire ammo. No Problems. 230 gr. are the staple of this round and cheap.
200 SWC = semi wadcutter. More lead than acp, thus, more cleaning. Good practice rounds. Clean very well after shooting. Leading can result in higher pressures.
230 FMJ full metal jacket rounds. Staple of .45 plinking and cheap.
Wolf .45 acp is a russian ammo, basically an fmj round without a reloadable casing. You can look at the difference. Many believe these are dirtier rounds because of the powder used. Affordable rounds if you do not reload.
Lots of variations. 230 fmj are cheap, practice rounds.
Clean well after use. Inspect barrel if shooting lots of them at once, and clean if needed at the range.
For home defense, look into Federal Hydra Shoks. Do you live in a house or apt? Makes a difference in choosing a defense round. There is another round which escapes my memory now that out-performs Hydras and other hollow points. I will get you the name shortly.
.
With your handgun you should be meticulous in cleaning anyway, as with any gun. I am anal about cleaning, thanks to the military and my father. IMO a defense weapon should be treated better than a military service weapon, in that it is defending your whole family. Treat the weapon well and it will defend your family.

im in a house, and if someone comes in, i have .45ACP hollow points and a 20gauge to back it up ;) I'm stoked about finding these cheap rounds, I just started back up with this target practice, hadn't done it in years and only then with .22 ,32special, 30-06

DBBT,

If you have a walmart near you, Winchester makes 100 round .45 acp boxes that sell for about $19.00. I usually but them out when I go and that is what I use for practice.
I haven't found a place yet to track you serial number but I found one other gun like yours and the serial # started 332***, the seller said it was manufactured in 1936. Very cool to have your grandpa's old service pistol.

That is up to you brother, a lot of them were produced. Personally if it was my grandpa's gun I wouldn't shoot it anymore. I would look for the orginal holster he had or a similar one and put it in my gun case as a family treasure.
Those guns go for about 650+ now in varying condition, but that one has a family tie. It is up to you. I like to fire collectables at least a few rounds, but that is me. I would love to have my grandpa's service gun from pre WWII though. Take care of it either way.
