Codec help?

Anyone know how to determine what codec a movie is encoded with? I've checked the properties of the file, and it's not showing any of the detail. Media Player won't download the codec either.

Ideas?

Yeah, I think I've got the latest codecs...I'm running XP Pro with Media Player 9, and it's an MPEG. I think I'm just missing a particular codec.

Usually when I run into this, it's DivX encoded, but I've got that codec installed.

it may need a dvd codec to play the file since dvds are mpegs..

divx is avi as far as I know.

By any chance is it one of the huge svcd movies?

If so, try a svcd program or a dvd player to see if that works.

For mpegs I use ZoomPlayer but I guess WMP plays them also. Are you sure you have enough codecs? I have installed Nimo codec pack but if you're going to install it look for Nimo lite pack 1.0 since the other ones have a huge load of codecs and not all of them are needed usually. If you decide to install a bigger package leave g400 out. It might screw up your whole system. Add ac3 codec and you should be able to view all kinds of files. Also Tsunami Codec Pack might be a useful alternative.

Okay, cool, I'll do some searches for those codec packs.

9 times out of 10, WMP downloads the right codec, and it's no big deal. Just not working this time for some reason.

Since we're on the subject...anyone know how to successfully view DivX encoded movies without locking up XP?

For DivX movies I have DivX 5.02 Pro Gain Bundle or something like that. (there might be a newer version also available) Don't remember but at least I've seen all the movies I have "obtained" during my dc++ hobby.

Also, I've tried WMP, the DivX player, and the ATI file player for DivX encoded movies, and they all cause my system to blue screen if I fast forward or jump around in the movie.

Well, I saw the clip. Very impressive lift looked really easy. Ever since I started using Zoom Player it's been my primary player. Only the wmv clips are played by WMP.
