Try this for your grip technique for more leverage (though it's hard to explain without a picture).
First, look for the handle in which the spring goes into it straight instead of having a slight curve to it. Some call this the dogleg. This should be on the thumb side.
The big crease in your palm near the base of your fingers; that's about where the gripper should be. You thrust your thumb forward to meet it with a solid hold.
You will notice that the other handle is too far away for your fingers to get a proper hold, this is why you take your other hand, and pinch the handles together a bit till you can get a good hold. This is called "setting" the gripper. By the way your pinky should be in a position where it is basically halfway on the bar.
Then squeeze!
